Excellent. A good, solid assault 'Mech. Happy to see it.

Wow. Well, I can't say I'm surprised, looks like you're working down a list of iconic and widely popular I.S. 'mechs that are recognizable to both TT gamers and MW2/MW4/MechCommander gamers. And for all the PPC/alpha fanboying was beginning to turn me off... damn. I just fell in love with this chassis again!

The look is very clean, no real frontal "shot-traps" to speak of, just solid slabs of frontal armor inturrupted only for the massive PPC barrels. While the Atlas exudes towering menace, and advertises every bit of weaponry it mounts (as per canon descriptions), the Awesome looks massive, solid, and well armed, like an impassive and implacable juggernaut. The narrow viewport of the cockpit glares out with a cold menace - it reminds me a bit of the Cylon Raiders from the BSG reboot. I like how the legs are beefed up a bit, too, so it doesn't look like it's going to topple over (my main problem with the original design).

I was holding off the Assault 'mech bandwagon, but I take a good look at this and think, "Damn, I just found my ride!" ...Again. :)

I am seriously enjoying FD's artwork and updates to these old designs, and I'm already excited to see what comes out next month!

Disappointing. It doesn't even look like a lot of FD's other designs. Regardless I hope this will shut up the fanboys now. AAAAAND they included making the mech alpha strike, and then firing again momentarily. *shakes head* Thank God this came out after GDC.

Read it again:

She could feel the small whine as she raised her ‘Mechs right arm, and aligned her torso. Alpha in three, two… The Atlas rounded the corner, far off in the distance – her zoomed crosshair centre-mass, she fired.

One never really got used to the sound and feeling of a PPC firing. Three at once was even more so.

Her Awesome rocked back as all three PPC bolts cut through the air, a distinct crackle in her ears as she watched the right arm explode on the Atlas, the harsh glow of the right torso as the PPC blasts tried to burn through. Her cockpit instantly filled with steam, and sweat was pouring out of her – the ‘Mech screamed a heat warning at her, and she switched fire groups to the right arm.

“Woah, confirmed hit Echo; he’s panicking.”

“Roger, Recon.”

The enemy Atlas, instead of moving ahead into cover, was trying to backpedal – her next PPC shot caused his right torso to explode, rocking him sideways and nearly knocking him over. The next shot cored out the Atlas, and it fell backwards out of sight.

She heard a soft whistling as LRM’s fell onto the Assaults who had taken cover behind this Atlas – that Recon was doing an excellent job. She allowed herself a smile remembering doing just that.

“Skirmish force moving in, we’ll flush them your way Echo.”

“Roger.”

The Recon squad joined the Skirmishers, and as promised, the other Assault ‘Mechs came into view, attempting to avoid the biting fire of the Centurion/Hunchback mixture, while bringing their own weapons to bear. She toggled through each PPC, targeting weak points and assisting Skirmish and Recon when she could.

I picking up that she fired 3-1-2 (alpha -> arm PPC -> two torso PPCs) then dropped to chain fire against the remainder of the enemy assault lance. That's good, conservative heat management.

And now for the Liao mech. Steiner has Atlas, FWL has Awesome, Daviots have Centurion, Kuritans have Jenner and Dragon. We need a proper mech to fight in, too. :)

The Catapult is heavily associated with House Liao... the Awesome is hardly exclusive to House Marik.

Is it me or does this look a lot like a Zeus? I love the Awesome, but honeslty I this is my least favorite art-wise. Still good, dont get me wrong, but not as inspiring as the others.

It looks nothing like a Zeus - head placement is wrong, arm shape and weapons are wrong, torso shape is wrong... It looks like an Awesome.

I like the look of the art, sorry trolls. I'm sorry if it doesn't look just like grand pa's Awesome. Grandpa's pick up looks different than it did 25 years ago too. ^_^

I disagree, looks just like the old rusty AWS-9Q we kept out in the barn when I was growing up! :P

That atlas must already have taken one heck of a whooping. A pristine AS7-D has the following Armour/Internarl per Arm, Side, and Center torsos: 34/17 32/21 43/31 So it must have had, at best and assuming no damage transfer, the following to lose a sequential arm, side, and center torso to 3 PPCs to each location: 13/17 9/21 0/30 Yay Artistic License?

Yeah, my count is 20 damage to the right torso and 10 to the arm on the alpha, 10 more damage to destroy the right torso, then another 20 through that right torso to core the Atlas. It must've taken damage bad damage to the right side before it rounded the bend.

As to the AWS-8Q's ability to alpha 3 consecutive times, that would leave it only at 6 heat (assuming no movement). The thing has *28* heat sinks. Kinda makes the whole "Her cockpit flushed with heat after the first salvo" thing kinda seem more liberally used artistic license.

I disagree - heat sinks don't dissipate heat instantly, and the sauna-like effect of firing that many energy weapons at once sounds very true to canon. While the AWS-8Q could dissipate 28 points of heat per 10s turn, the sudden heat surge from firing three PPCs could risk damage to systems or pilot injury - which is why I've heard it mentioned in more than one source that firing 2-1 instead of all 3 PPCs at once was the preferred tactic for most Awesome pilots.

To grab things, a very useful tool for a giant mech.

And yes also to PUNCH things

Always a Core favorate of mine the Awesome, Mind you you do have to stagger fire or end up like a charcoal brickette. Sooo much heat, but what a punch. Must say a prefer Gauss to PPC's for that reason but G-Rifles explode when hit so you have to be careful.

Hurr? Gauss rifles do not explode. Perhaps you're refering to its ammo? :)

With the Commando, the Awesome is by far FD's best redesign. Simply awesome!

Now we need a Liao-Mech. Vindicator would be nice!

Gauss Rifle ammo is composed of solid, nickel-ferrous slugs - they are inert.

The Gauss Rifle itself, however, includes a set of rather volatile capacitors that, when struck (that is, when the weapon itself takes a critical hit), can explode with much the same effect as an ammo explosion (for 20 points of damage).
