I name mine after poker hands as it goes with my call sign. "Ace High", "Aces Up", Aces Full", etc...

I named my Swayback "LASERBUDDY" when I had it before the recent reset. I named my incomplete and stupid Gaussapault "GAUSS PAUSE" because I'm very stupid.

I name mine after super heros.

My Raven was Nightwing. My second Raven was Batman. My first missile Cat was the Green Arrow. And the Atlas was Superman.

Hunckback: Lineman
Cicaida: Scout Hunter
Atlas: Front Line
Awesome: Artillery
Jenner: Spotting

Basically based on their role on the battlefield. Nothing special.

it depends on my mood and the Mech model.
My K2 was named "NyanCat" , the C1 "Claptrap" (because 97,6% more WubWub)
Atlases usually get Names from WH40k (because the Atlas kinda looks like a Space Marine, they were named Grimaldus, and Ulric)
my Awesome was named "Barney", and my Hunchie went by the name of "Igor".

You can only name them when you buy them, and then thats it?

That is correct. You name them when you purchase the 'mech, and the name is set from there. It would be nice if they let you rename them later. Perhaps that will be included in a later patch.

Side note:
My new Cicada CDA-3C is named Longshot. Straightforward and self-explanatory, with a PPC and plenty of heat sinks for a long-ranged punch.

Sometimes I don't bother, sometimes I give them the French version of their names, like Corbeau or Cigale.

One time, just for the nostalgia factor, I tried making a Commando with an SR2 launcher on its center torso and calling it OppaiMissairu. Sadly the character limit stopped me one letter short.

I have a trio of Ravens. Edgar, Allen, and Poe. Edgar is a pointman build, fast wih lasers. Allen is my sneaky EW platform. The latest update with ECM and Beagle. And Poe is my scout and baiter. Run in, grab attention, then retreat to my lines.

Catapult C4 Missile boat: Astrea, after my favorite build on the old ps1 squaresoft game "Einhander" of an Astrea FGA MkI loaded with dual missile launchers. as long as your ammo lasted, everything on the screen was going to die.

Perhaps my planned dual ERPPC with as much double heatsinks i can cram in there CTPL K2 will be named "EOS"

Indeed.

70s Japanese mecha series were... special. I wish I had a picture of my face when, as a kid, I first saw how "female" mechs made very creative use of space for missile storage.

I name them after Mech Commander standards.

Mech: Raven
If it's full of weaponry more than armor, RAVEN-A
If it has more armor than weaponry: RAVEN-B
If it's more focused on jump-jets: RAVEN-J

...Aaand that's why I have this pilot name as well.

Cheers!

I name my variants after old legendary creatures from Magic: The Gathering. Currently I have three Dragon variants named: Dakkon [Blackblade], Nikol Bolas & Sulknar
