More thoughts on the subject - the only logical explanation I can come to, is that the devs are under pressure from Russ who is under pressure from the Investors to go Open Beta. I don't know how they could have logically burnt through $5mil in Founders' money already, but then again, I've never run a gaming title before. So the investors are like "push the game out", and Russ, despite his best efforts to prevent that from happening, is finally having to acquiesce to the Investors' demands. There's little chance that anyone who plays this game on a regular basis feels that this is ready for Open Beta. It appeals to us because we're fanatics - but to others who aren't, this game is going to have little appeal, and in the long run, the revenue stream and size of the community will suffer as a result of a pre-mature launch.
This makes no sense to me. We, the founders, ARE the investors. We gave them $5.6 million of our dollars to make this game. I know that doesn't entitle us to tell them how to run their business, but it should at least add some weight to our opinions. I honestly can not believe that the whole push into "open beta" is because they are strapped for cash. All of the equipment they need was probably paid for long ago. The only costs they should be incurring now are the basic overheads to running any business: Rent of workspace, electricity, payroll, etc.
If you've been following any of the big kickstarters lately, you'll notice that developers think they can make a brand new game with $1 million dollars. Planetary Annihilation is being made with just over $2 million ($900k goal), Project Eternity with a little over $3 million ($1.1m goal), and Star Citizen with, currently, $730k + official site pledges ($500k goal). How is it that we, the fans, invested over $5m dollars in this game and, so far, all we've gotten is WoMechs with 4 maps?
If this truly is a grab for cash because they've spent all the founders' money, this game is doomed anyway because there is some severe incompetence in the management of this company.
As you can see, I'm a Legendary Founder. I've invested some of my hard-earned money in the development of this game because I am a fan of the universe. And let me say, as a fan and investor, this game is
NOT ready for open beta. I'm one of the founders that have been, mostly, sitting on the sideline these last few months and it's not because of the wipes. I don't care about wipes in beta, there isn't a single beta tester out there that should. I don't play because the game is boring and broken. I've played and loved every Mechwarrior game since the second and I invested my money in this one because I had hoped to see a resurgence of the franchise. If I had known when I invested that the game we play now is what we would have at "launch," I probably would have kept my money. I saw community warfare and had flashbacks to Multiplayer Battletech 3025, before EA shut down production on it. I envisioned dropping onto a planet with a group of my friends and fighting battles that mattered to the (game) universe, not battles that meant nothing.
What we have now is World of Tanks with mechs. This will not be enough to keep the average gamer satisfied and will do nothing but be a detriment to the future of this game. Open Beta is a mistake, one this game probably won't recover from. If OB starts with the game the way it is now, I forsee an influx of new people that will stick around 3 months tops. After that, the only people occupying the servers will be diehard fans in premade groups waiting 10 minutes for a match. Nobody will be around to test your new content and by the time community warfare, the main thing about this game that would have kept the average Joe interested, rolls around, MWO will have received so much bad press that it will be near impossible to get those players back.
I know that it's too late to change the minds of anybody that matters at this point. All I can do is hope that I'm wrong. I, as a fan, want this game to succeed. I want to see community warfare full of people having fun, making an impact on the game universe. I just don't see that happening if OB\Launch goes ahead today. I don't want this to be the last 3D Mechwarrior game I'll ever see. I just love big, stompy mechs too much. It's a pity PGI didn't listen to the investors that want this game to succeed for reasons other than money: Us.
