X-Wings, seriously?

They don't have jump drives (no idea how Luke got out system), they only have a tiny laser array and terrible armor if their shields get breached. They're only slightly better than freaking TIE Fighters.

I'm pretty sure even a BTU fighter could tear one to shreds almost instantly, and they're pretty low on the tier of sci-fi fighter craft. I've gotta go with any jump fighter from the Wing Commander universe on this one (as far as manned fighter craft going), like the Dragon.

not sure if anyone has corrected you on this or not... but... they DO have hyperspace genarators... essentially.. "jump-drive" as do the A-WIngs, Y-WIngs, B-Wings (all includes shields)... as for being "slightly" better than a TIE-Fighter... think again... the "Eyeballs" only had a pair of lasers.. X-Wings had quad lasers plus Proton Torps... kill an eyeball in a single "pair" shot... kill 2 tandum on a double-tap... The "Squints" (TIE-Interceptors) are slightly faster than the X-wing and a bit more nimble, however, still lacking shields.. but make up for it with quad lasers. Please.. if you're gonna try to knock down a spacific universe/design... at least know the info first.

This reminds me of Imperium Galactica's Fighter IV: Streak.

Why have I not heard of this show before?! Those are some pretty impressive visual effects for mid-'90s TV sci-fi.

Too many to list a single favorite: The A-Wing, TIE-Interceptor (the X-wing vs. Tie Fighter version, which had a tractor beam and shields), Enriyes (Freespace2), Descent series, most already listed here, plus the Starlancer series (The Grendal was one of my favorites there). I started gaming with Wing Commander 1, so here's a shout out to all of my fellow Christopher Blairs! The Hornet was fun, easy and fast, really good in a skilled pilot's hands, much like the Rapier.... then there's the Excalibur and Vampire I and II - all Wing Commander series ships. I'm not sure if you could count it as a space fighter, but it did fly in space: the Razor from Earthsiege 2. Now, for those of you who know, this will be rediculusly easy: connect, by actor, Star Wars to Wing Commander, then to Mass Effect (3) :P

Viper Mk VII. It is capable of rotating 180 degrees in slightly under .35 seconds, it can fly as far and fast as possible given fuel, carries three automatic railguns that actually have scientific basis unlike proton torpedoes or laser cannons, and missiles. Plus, no annoying R2-D2.

The Viper was actually based a lot on the F-16 right down to the code name, so it is safe to assume the Viper is a lightweight air(Or space) superiority fighter. Or both, considering Vipers are configured to fly in both atmosphere and space; it has RCS points and control vanes and flaps.

Wedge Antilles only pilots X-Wings while taking down the Empire one Tie Fighter at a time.

That wasn't Wedge... that was another guy.. Tycho Celchu, an Imperial Defector sometime around the Hoth (Episode V) line up. He helps Wedge re-form the Rogue Squadron, later, He, Wedge, and Wes Jenson form Wraith Squadron..

and Yes.. Wedge also piloted a TIE fighter a few times.. not for the Empire, mind you, but as an under cover squadron to help hunt down a certain faction of the remaining Imperial forces. (Star Wars X-Wing Series Novels)

My only beef with the Viper fighters is that they don't have intersteller travel for long range.. They're Great for anything locally, and they're a Great design.

Has to be the starfury. Its the only fighter on the list that could actually fly. Rest of them are atmospheric planes stuck out in space which everyone should know won't work.

I prefer the Viper Mark II to that of the newer Viper Mark VII. Here is the Mark II in all her rendered glory:

The Viper is a beauty, but, even by Battletech standards, is pretty slow at around 7g's. Not much in the way of armor either, since they can be shot down with Raider pee shooters (basically GAU-8/RAC-2's) in a few hits. They are sort of like TARDIS's because you can put 4 missiles, 2400 rounds of 30mm, and fuel in those tiny frames not even 9m long!

because like many other science fiction shows to be gotten hold of by Fox, it got cancelled almost immediately. It ran for only a single season in the mid-90s.

My favorite is probably the Slave 1.

The design is unique, it has FREAKING LASER GUNS, and it can release seismic charges, which are AWESOME.

No, not like that.
