Kind of a depressing topic, especially since the game hasn't even been released yet...
"Is it over yet..?!" :]

Better admit though this isnt going to be walk in the park, but if they play their cards right this can be huge success. World of Tanks's ADs are just everywhere, lots of retailers who sell their games, lots of press etc.

The last successful multi-player MW game MW4 Mercs was played for about eight years by me. I think it would be safe to say that this game would probably go mod if it became unsupported (3D gets better) and then into another leap of years like mektek did to Mercs. So possibly end of life at a decade if it is dropped like MS did to MW4. This type of game has a large following of old farts so it is a safe bet that many of us will probably play til we run out of money, memory or lives. ;)

I hope this game lasts longer then the 1000-years-Reich.

But on the other hand...I don't want to see the Uziel or the MK2 in MWO...

Hey! What's the prob with the Uzi?

As for the lifetime question, I say for as long as there's still Mechwarrior or Battletech fans... or a military develops it's OWN mechs.

In all honesty, the slow news drip is actually more frustrating than it is anticipating. I can see it in the majority of new threads that people have next to nothing to go on rather than speculation, and repeated discussion on speculation over and over and over boils down to 1 solemn truth; there's little finite to go on.

Couple that with being months out, and I can see the community start to gnaw on it's own hand just to mix things up. Long story short, things are stagnant, and with little on the horizon, patience remains the name of the game.

BUT I'M NOT A PATIENT PERSON!!!

With decent support, it should nott have problems sticking for a while. Taken it would be very successful and get young generation fans that have mechs in their genes, we could see a few games F2P, or not, that will continue in this kind of games for a while.

As long as this game scratches the MW itch, people will play.

On the plus side, easy download and f2p model both mean a large player base. CE3 means that it will make a big impression today and still look good for several years as people’s hardware improves bringing more players. Also, the established Battletech fans will always be the core of the community and we are a dedicated-for-life bunch of nut cases.

On the negative side, f2p means profits will not be earned the traditional way and player-spending momentum must be maintained in other ways beside subscriptions. Also, since the game is online mp only and the servers will be hosted by PGI and not by players, if PGI ends support, there would have to be another party to take over server hosting. If not, it would simply close.

PGI is investing heavily to make MWO the best MW sim beyond all other games and more true to the commonly accepted canon experience so it could last as long or longer than the past MW titles. A decade or more for a really good game isn't out of the question.

I personally think they won't adhere to a 1:1 release ratio with Mechs after the game releases. It's just too restrictive to keep in place and reduces content that people want.

I could envision the Dev's advancing the 1:1 timeline by years, even decades possibly, with future major MW:O version releases. It would allow the Dev's to keep up with PC technology as well as refreshing the story-line, and would help to keep the player-base fairly consistent over the years.

Does seem like a fairly depressing topic, however, I'd say MWO will last as long as people are willing to fund it. And they're only going to be willing if its a fun, challenging, popular game.

PGI has a great vision for the game, hopefully marketing can get enough people to check it out and spent a few dollars.

Cheers.

MWO looks like the MechWarrior game many envisioned for many years. I still play MW2-Mercs, even have an old Windows 98 PC for just that purpose, so I won't stop playing MWO. Other than that, no comment.

I feel MW:O will do will initally so long is the gameplay experience is smooth. deathmathes over 4 environments (hopfully way more maps) wont hold onto folks into the long term. The Clan invasion will truly be the the test of the product. I suspect it'll grow with more game/match types, a Solaris 7, stuff like that is what will really keep folks playing. I am guessing here but i think the real hardcore want a deep strategic experience with the factions fighting over worlds and fronts. "3025" ISW call it whatever.

I wonder if PGI considered kickstarter for an expansion or two? how much would the community need to get say 12 mechs or Solaris? I'm very impressed with how well the shadowrun returns kickstarter is doing.

House Jurai has been playing MW since before 2000 using 'limited supported' MW games. With support and a good solid base it should go on for a long time IMO.

Hey there. I have heard of House Jurai. Use to practice with you guys with fellow Aussies from my clan back then, SC and Skip. Just wondering if you knew of them, and if you did, are you still in touch with them.? If so, let them know I said Hi. :D

As for MWO succeeding, it will if the Devs stop taking so much advice from the BT/TT purist here. Who for the most part have no, to little experience with online play, and take more advice from MW vets who have been in competative/league play, online matches. ^_^

Though I agree with this in concept, what little PGI has revealed about the game has shown, IMO, a good balance of basing the gaming off of TT, but still allowing a wide variance as to how it is implemented. In short, they are using the rules as a basis, but not as de facto law.

I still play CS 1.6 on occasion so, it'll pretty much last as long as people are playing I'd wager
