I see a lot of hate for Katherine, I don't get it. She just took back her House and made it what it should have been. The alliance with Davion? Horrible. I give you the Cappellan Confederation? C'mon, Davion is the evil one here. I don't blame Katherine one bit for separating from that sort. Sure she made some mistakes, but who hasn't? Davion just wanted us for all our moneys, mechz, and hawties.

No really, Katherine is /not/ all of the Lyran Alliance/Commonwealth anymore than all of Liao and Kurita is Asian. Quantifying a like is often difficult. Why do I like House Steiner and why will I fight for them? I just do. Mock Steiner all you want about our tactics and mechs, long story short I like Steiner because it's fun for me and I can get behind them.

Besides strong leaders are loved and hated with equal measure.

Hey, I originally played as a Steiner, but Katherine took my faction, livery, mechs and money away. I'm Davion because I want the FedCom, not because I particularly like Hanse and Victor. Pro-IS, anti-clan, and currently part of the only faction that wants it united and out of Comstar control.

She is my sovereign queen and I am her loyal Render... and I shall rend forth the blood of all who stand against us...

I'm a bit disappointed.
I thought Davion was just being hyped up by all the game developers, but it really is the most favourite.

How boring.

They still got the fun planets like Galatea and Solaris 7.

None of those choices, with the exception of a few individuals the Great Houses are all ********.
Give me the Outworlds Alliance!

I'm disappointed to see FedSuns leading by a mile, but not at all surprised. There are people who really like FedSuns from their long running history and that's cool, but I think a lot of people pick them because they've been mislead by more recent fiction to think they are "the good guys." It's not surprising given how they're built up in most game fiction.

I bet lots of people think Steiner is evil and/or psychotic, too, because of the badly written Civil War. I miss when they were rich merchants and were more interested in being a General so they could go to all the fancy parties than actual fighting.

I agree with you, I really do. I liked Davion back in the day because Hanse was a jackass, but I think most Davion fans are more familiar with latter-day Davion. Then again, my first introduction to the game was via House Steiner in the Cresent Hawks series so I thought the Combine was pretty much "the bad guys." Before the civil war there really were no "good guys" or "bad guys," and everyone was a major shade of gray. Well at least in terms of actions; there were some good/bad characters, but they definitely didn't represent entire powers.

Almost no games have addressed the Free Worlds League (my favorite faction), and they're barely touched on in even the old novels. Most people don't even realize how multi-cultural they are or how their government is the closest thing to a functioning Democratic Republic left in the galaxy.

Likewise, the Capellan Confederation has been treated as a total joke in the games and only in the latter novels did they get any kind of real support: They're probably my second favorite faction because of how they've evolved and survived over years of being kicked so hard. I was disappointed when the fiction went off the rails because they were being setup to be united with the MoC and TC, which would have left them one of the most powerful houses with back doors on Marik and Davion. They are an interesting faction that literally seems to get reduced to "SNEAKY CHINESE PEOPLE" in MW4:M and MC2, which is terrible at best and racist at worst. In particular since there's no majority race in any of the nations, really.

All I'm saying is I understand why the other factions don't have the same following, despite having a wealth of interesting background information available and more complexity than they're given credit for if you've sought it out (which not everyone has).

Elsewhere, I have stated that I would have no IS faction to root for if the FRR did not exist. This was in error. I simply forgot the FWL existed!

We were the commies back then, consisting of Chinese, Russians and Scottish. Stackpole took out both Russian and Scottish parts and then tried to destroy the faction as a whole. Later, teh Xin-Sheng movement did make us more like those "sneaky Chinese people", for the expense of not being the most elite faction in the IS, but still getting our "back" kicked all the time. The beter Confederation is good, but we got it at the expense of our national identity, as there is big xenophobia towards those who did not subdued to the Chinese culture. ;)

Ever heard of a thing called "political correctness"? Games and books alike made Davions look like the good guys and people fight fo them , because everyone else does. :)

I tend to favor the Combine, they have some of the more interesting technical advances of the Houses, and designs. I don't care for all the politics one has to play to advance in the LCAF, Davions are almost Mary Sue status, and the Capellans are very sneaky/oppressive. You don't really hear much from the Free Worlds League, but I'm not a fan of Thomas Marik and their alliance with the Word of Blake kinda turns me off. Finally, the Free Rasalhague Republic never really grabbed my attention, and Haakon Magnusson seemed like an ineffectual leader to me.

House Kurita has a healthy blend of honor, duty, and spirituality that is conducive to being a warrior, though their lower classes are not much better off than the Capellans.

Post-schism Comstar has some good points to it too, but that wasn't a poll option.

Kind of a Toss Up between Free Worlds and Fedsun. The Free Worlds are my kind of place, essentially a union of independent planets that work together to remain that way in the face of massive empires which are usually hostile. At the same time you have to respect House Davion, they try to embody the ideal of the enlightened noble class which exists to protect the common man, very Arthurian ideals espoused by them even if they are brave to the point of insanity... I don't think any of them die of old age.

Forgive me if this has already been answered. But is there a thread that helps those who are unfamiliar with all of the lore to pick a house?

I like the Davions. Powerful, resourceful, generally get the job done, and don't worry about too much else. Combine warlords have far too bad a habit of slaughtering innocent civilians whenever they feel like it.

Every Great House has done it at one point or another, but the Combine is the only house that has really made a habit of it. The Wolfs Dragoons families, Kentares IV, Budingen, Kentares IV, Kentares IV, etc.
