Well, i think it isn't the problem , that heavy or assault mechs are always the better choice.
at an open Field maybe your grounded with a ligth or medium against the heavier classes, but if you had the chance to overthrow with tactics or a lancemates. in this moment is a good and fast recon and narc Mech my first and only choice. Let them be bigger or not after a few Waves of LRM and ELRM, they will fall in pieces ^^.
just a game of Luck and Fail + Skill .

I'm still waiting for more heavies to be revealed (aren't we all), but I definitely see myself avoiding the assault class for a good while. Not because I dislike them, but because they were all I could pilot in previous multiplayer MW games. MW4's constant NH/UA games and twelve Daishis on the field spoiled me for too long. Time to get back in the cockpits of 'Mechs that are truly fun and challenging.

"And don’t get me started on upkeep costs, gents. They’re brutal for assault ’Mechs"

I don't think this means that we are going to see actual in-game upkeep costs. However, armour costs 10,000C$ per ton (16pts) in Battletech, and most of it needs replacing after most battles. So an assault mech with 16 tons of armour that needs to replace 12 tons after every battle is going to cost 120,000C$ per game to repair, before you even think about ammo. Light & Medium mechs simply don't have as much armour to replace, which makes them cheaper to run.

"Ahhh, if only the old ugly mindset of the previous MW games could be erased from time eternal and we could start fresh!"

Sadly mindsets are long lasting and often entrenched across generational boundaries. That does not mean change cannot be had. Hell Germany was once divided in half. How many thought that would would ever change? A very determined few is how many. <_<

Does the MWO Community have a determined few? I think it does.

We call them the Development Team. Soldier on lads and gals. We, those who understand the true need for change, await the fruits of your labor.

Personally I am just looking forwards to a Madcat mk II

Though I plan to play a lot of scout mechs to, zipping around like an annoying mosquito you just can't seem to hit <_<

While I can understand the draw of the Assault (who doesn't want to have the biggest beatstick sometimes?), I can't really get behind it. When you're a MechWarrior you're already piloting a walking, armed building, so why should it be the Chrysler Building? I'm one of those pilots who wants the maneuverability and modest armament that the Medium weight class provides (then again, I'm one of those oddballs who prefers piloting quad mechs; Bishamon, please!).

I definitely don't want to be forced into an assault, I personally prefer mediums and resist using an assault unless absolutely necessary. Which is never.

Personally I'm holding out hope that the PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk will be making its appearance on the field of battle. As a scout lance command mech and as a harasser it's a very fine piece of kit. As fast and maneuverable as most classic light mechs and with more armor and heavier armament. To me it strikes that perfect balance so well.

Sure, many medium pilots will tell you they swear by the Griffin, Wolverine or Shadow Hawk, but for me it's always been about the Phoenix Hawk,.

I'd love to see a Bushwalker or a Vulture, fast med mechs, good all around, I'll take them over an Atlas anyday.

Vulture is a heavy.

On the news itself, without any limitations I'd find it hard to believe that heavies and maybe light assaults don't become the most popular but then what do I know, I haven't played it, unlike the guy who wrote the OP .

To make medium mechs truly the "work horse of the inner sphere", in other words the most prevalent mech, would need some sort of restrictions, such as tonnage (which seems unlikely for public games at this point) or as hinted upkeep costs.

There have been several threads on how to make mediums better workhorses. My own suggestion was for mediums to have more module slots, so that they could be better multi-role mechs. Also, mediums have a lot of variety in the "flavour" of their hardpoints. The Hunchback, for example, has a chest full of ballistic hardpoint, whilst the laser Swayback variant has a chest full of energy hardpoint, and the missile Swayback has a chest full of missile hardpoint. Boating, anyone? You can't do that with a Dragon.

I agree wholeheartedly with this post.
Assault 'Mechs are good... but they're SLOW. For them, good speed is anything over 60 km/h and they average around 51.2 km/h.

At the same time, I'm not that fond of Light 'Mechs either. In fact, I make it habit to keep any Light frames I have off the battlefield. My "Light" frame is the Strider, a perfect balance of speed, firepower, and recon capacity. Sure it's a Medium, but it handles like a Light, with better weapons and armor.

My mainliners range in the 50-75 ton range. Catapults, Mad Cats, Bushwackers, Champions... stuff like that.

Assaults have their place... though admittedly, the Mad Cat MkII handles more like a Heavy than an Assault... even still, there's always a place for all classes on the field...

Though my personal combat tastes would have swarms of ER-PPCs and LRM-20s singing their deathsongs on the field, I can see the need for the smaller guns, and not just for the lower thermal readings... sometimes, you need precision... not widespread annihilation.

As he said, no one group of mechs is great for all missions. Some warriors wont step into the cockpit of a smaller mech.

Me, I'll take my Awesome every chance I get, but if not, give me a WolfHound, Jenner, or even a Locust, and I'll do my part.

Versatility, that's what a warrior needs! That and to know the mech they're piloting.

I have to admit I am a hardcore Promethius Piolt.....sometimes if I can still get a hold of them I would take a old Ragnarok out for a spin...but I want this game to launch soon....It has been too long since I had a decent Mech battle.

Prometheus and Ragnarok? :P

You must be one of the MechAssaulters. Welcome to the world of real mechs, then.

Wasn't there a Prometheus in the old Mechwarrior RPG adventure "Unbound"? Victor Davion named his Daishi "Prometheus" for its arsenal of lasers. But a word of warning: trolls home in on the word "Ragnarok".

I think he means actual Prometheus. A franken mech from Clan pieces used also to test illegal neural interface.

I thought that was what all FRR pilots had rather than a pistol or a needler straped to them in their cockpit
