Communication is Key in MW:O. And for a lone player who is limited to typing and not actively talking, play at your own risk, because games are not always going to be so straight forward as the technology advances. Sometimes you have to explore other avenues. Clearly, as this game is not Counter Strike or any other fast paced FPS. It is a tactical shooter, whether you like it or not. That being said...
Step 1: In game Mech bay, got to Menu > Settings> and click the box that activates <VOIP C3>
Step 2: Download "C3" Client (google it). http://www.downloadc3.com/. It is very user friendly, just play with the settings a bit and understand that you have to have a computer that supports a mic and audio. If your able to play this game then chances are your computer can and will.
Step 3: In the C3 program in the CHANNELS tab, look for SEARCH option and type in "Dropship." Such a search should lead you to a number of Dropship names channels to choose from. Choose one that has people in it. Some will already have 8 or more chatters in it, depends on the time of day. Run MW:O simultaiously and then...
Step 4: TALK AND ASK QUESTIONS, join a team and play. You don't specificaly have to be playing to get help, but guarunteed you will learn more about MW:O than your gonna get relying on the Forums.
With this knowledge that you have the option to use. GL and HF (Good Luck and Have Fun).

I know it's only beta, but I believe that the social infrastructure should be available right at the start. At the very least, it would help alleviate many of these issues.

Things are broken and will be fixed. Functionality that is not here is still to be added.

As I specificaly said, you have the OPTION to use it. I could care less who does. But one can not say that there are no option at all.

This is just information that you either use... or you don't use. That is all this post is intended for.

Noob= utilizes gimmicky game mechanics to overcome their lack of skill. Can be "experienced" or not, but lacks skill and the willingness to learn.

Balkanizing would give the impression that taking 15min to install a small piece of software, setup, and be able to interact with more experienced players by the push of a button is too much work for a game that is not yet complete with all the tools that you desire when you want them too.

If the game doesn't explicitly match groups vs groups, it should at least attempt to in the process of matchmaking before dumping them in a pitched battle with PUG randoms. No amount of kicking and screaming will suddenly make every random team perform on level ground with a prepared group.

No, balkanizing would give the impression that the voice-using, lobby-pickup community is spread across TS3*, mumble, Skype, Ventrilo, now-sort-of-official-but-not-integrated C3, and more, instead of a unifying force applied by actually being part of the MWO client, hooked directly into your MWO login and activity, and part of a built-in grouping process.
That it's applied effort on top of actually using the game's core program itself, and a nontrivial step into a marginally more intimate internet world that many users have never taken before, is a whole other sack of cats.
*Given the the official, and then officially-unoffical, beta voice servers are TS3, there's history behind the population being concentrated in there, but of course there are many other TS3 servers out there in use.

So Im getting the feeling that it is unattractive for people to find solutions to problems despite the obstacles. And with so many options to choose from all anyone would have to do is choose one. Not to mention that because this games is STILL IN BETA and does not have all of its tools in working order, the solution provided is more than reasonable for the time being.
