Sat. Apr 7, 3049: Heralded as “a work-horse to maintain AFFC dominance,” Corean Enterprises unveiles the CN9-D Centurion to much fanfare.

The D variant of the Centurion is the first of many upgrades using Star League technology. The chassis was re-engineered to use Endo Steel construction techniques. Next the power plant was changed from the standard engine to an extra light engine. In the process the maximum speed was increased to 97.2 km/h. Finally, the weapons were upgraded. The Autocannon/10 was upgraded to an LB-X Autocannon/10 and an Artemis IV fire control system was added to the LRM launcher. The two Medium Lasers were retained.

fine mech. i hope its sidekick the trebuchet gets a lovely remake too.re: side coreing- to use those special engines they take up critical slots in the center and the left/right sides. theres a price to pay for every improvement in the game. that one is a bit risky imo

An Inner Sphere XL engine takes up 12 critical spaces - 6 in the center torso and three in each side torso. When an engine takes three critical hits, it ceases to function. Destruction of a torso location counts as a critical hit against any engine spaces in that location, so destruction of a side-torso on an IS XL-equipped 'mech means it ceases to function.

It's why I don't like XL engines in ammo-dependent 'mechs, personally. Even with CASE an ammo crit means you're toast.

Yuppers - eXtra Light engines use low-density materials, but they take up more space than a normal engine. They are so fat that they protrude into the side torsos. The destruction of a side torso means your Mech is out of comission.

eXtra Light engines are only useful to offensive units; Defending units cannot afford to sacrifice their staying-power for speed.

Damn, now THAT is one nasty upgrade. Loses a bit of survivability because of the engine, but gains it back with the speed increase. Oh, how I wish I could start out with an LB-X/10. T__T

I wonder if this mech will start out as faction specific to the Federated Commonwealth? I'd like to see some faction specific stuff. It would make the game more interesting! Interesting to note that star-league era tech will be available. I was wondering if it would, specifically double-heat sinks, endo-steel/FF armor. ;)

Yeah the speed makes it very effective, but the XL engine makes it fragile. Not well armored either. It can dish out a hit, but it can't take one well.

4 tons of ammo in the right torso. There's a CASE there also, but it's unsure how that will play out in game. In TT rules, that torso would still be toast if you hit the ammo-making the XL engine toast-making the mech toast. Near misses on thtat location might hit the arm, which holds the nasty. Taking out the ammo, even if the CASE protects the rest of the mech, reduces it's firepower to...ignore status. Now WHERE will I aim? ;)

Remonds me of the Grand Dragon upgrade also. It gets an XL and the AC turns to a PPC. I might downgrade the engine once I've got a Grand and accept a bit slower mech in order to keep it's survival level up. It's still fast for a heavy (till clans show up)

They've said that there won't be faction specific mechs, but that there might be faction varied pricing. So a Feddie could get one of these puppies for cheap, but if they want a Grand Dragon, they're gonna have to bring a dump truck by the bank Vice Versa for me.. (At least I'm hoping that's how it works)

Yeah, the other problem is that XL engines do NOT equal double heat sinks. If you want double heat sinks, you have to upgrade that seperatily.

I also do not like the LB-X ACs, because a shotgun effect was just to increase your chance to get a crit in a stripped area of armor or a head shot/CT Crit (roll snake-eyes or box cars). Pretty much in TT you rolled like the LRM 10 to see how many actually hit, but rolled for a location for every point of damage. Thus it was rare to actually do 10 points of damage (average 7) but you really increased the chance to hit an area stripped of armor or the above rolls.

I suppose it is 11 tons/6 Crits vs 12 tons/7 Crits for the standard AC 10 (and of course the Clan LB-X is 10 tons/5 Crits... your the best FASA). I would just never use the buck-shot option.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if they'll let us carry different ammo loads here. In TT you could carry both normal (slug rounds) and LB-X (shotgun), switching between the two as you liked. Would be a nice touch and an interesting choice for pilots on how much of each to carry.

OR... Just load a ton of slugs and a ton of shot & you now have a equivalent direct-fire PPC (without the heat) & a crit-seeking LRM10 (for the cost of 1 ton).
