Quick version?

Didn't like the drama that seems rampant in all the merc units I've been in so I joined a faction unit that has an active community and the mechs I like.

Davion? Too hero boys.
Steiner? Attached to hero boys.
Kurita? Too anime.
FRR? Doomed and I like non insect booze.
Liao? Too Mao.

That left purple space democracy with a preference for eagles.

Marika!

Honestly, I have no idea how I joined. I just logged in one day, bout a month ago, and found the purple bird in my profile area.

I did a little reading on the faction and found it to my liking, but still...
WHAT DID I DO TO GET THE PURPLE BIRD???

There was a glitch on the website that moved everyone's faction loyalty one to the left or right in the selection screen, or maybe not everyone, but some people in some database or something, it happened to me, but welcome aboard! Have you checked out www.house-marik.net to play with other people chosen by the purple bird?

Because I can say I come in Peace, then shoot after, and if I make a kill or just annoy someone, I can run skamper behind a rock saying sorry, just to repeat the whole process over again.

I like that Marik is the least tyrannical of the space autocracies and the diversity of the member states.

Marik is the underdog. I always stick to the underdog. Major factions (FRR doesnt count coz they're just a bunch of blonde nationalists beaten everytime i read a battletech book) are so boring.

Being Romanian, Marik is the only faction that speaks Romanian as one of its primary languages.

After that, I started getting familiar with the lore and actually really like it for that reason now too :D

The only table-top campaign I ever did where faction and such mattered was a Mechwarrior Mercenaries campaign where we started as a House Marik hired merc unit and then got hired on to a periphery job that ended up being the beginning of the clan invasion.

As such, it was / is the only house I really know much about lore-wise, thus the only house I have any real knowledge about or "allegiance to."

I have been a Marik Loyalist since the beginning days of Battletech. They are the Roman Republic of the Inner Sphere and I love that. B)

Very true. All the other Successor States are quite mono-ethnic. TFWL has always been the most Cosmopolitan.

That is only seemingly correct. The other Successor States have quite sizeable ethnic groups and minorities. In raw numbers they encompass just as many different cultures than the FWL.

Even the bland and boring Davions hold territory besides the Curcis March heartland, which is predominantly western european, like the former United Hindu Collective and their border regions have multiple worlds which are predominantly asian.

The main differences between the FWL and the other Successor States is that in FWL territory these ethnic groups A) tend to stick together geographically and politically (like the 3 world Mosiro Archipelago with strong arabic influences or the spanish/portugese Trinity Worlds) and B ) these provinces matter in the political decision making of the League, as it is less centralized organisationally.

Therefore the provinces (which themselves are often a hodgepodge in cultural composition - see indian, burmese and norwegian backgrounds in the Principality of Regulus) appear much more frequently in discussions about House Marik than any cultures in other states.

So, in fact it is rather a question of importance and appearance than a matter of numbers. Please note this doesn´t marginalize the cosmopolitan nature and mindset of the League. It emphasizes it.

I've always had an attraction to Marik. I like its Federal Republic style of government and its respect for the individual. Besides, according to the lore, one of the dominant culture groups is American, which I am. Therefore, I think it's one of the few places in this universe I think I would feel at home. Gives me something to "fight for" you know?

Besides that, they have a wicked powerful space navy through this era, which I think is cool. I think it's also kind of cool that they are doomed to be destroyed and then destined to be reborn.

1986/7ish, My brother played Davion, one of my friends played Laio and I opted for Marik. It was also useful, as that was the first House guide we found. I liked it because the RPG hooks were seemingly greater than those of some of the other houses, until the Periphery houses were described in the Mechwarrior book. Not only did you have external enemies, you had internal ones and my GM made sure that the Andurians figured heavily in the tabletop and RPG. I've been playing them ever since with occasional foreys into the Out Worlds Alliance and two successful Mech units. One was designed as a heavily armed trading company (we morphed an Invader into a Tramp, long before we knew there was a Tramp), our motto was we deliver no matter how heavy the fire. And the second was more run of the mill, playing hit and run with the clans and making a ton of money selling clan salvage to the houses.

Right now I'm a loner, but when (if?) CW is implemented, I will be joining Marik. And mostly for one of the reasons stated above. As an American, the FWL gives me something I can identify with, I suppose. Although my next choice would have been being a member of the Comguard, I think. They seem cool. xD

pretty much ^these^

i believe in Democracy and Personal Freedom, and though i dont really follow BattleTech Lore that well, FWL and House Marik seem to be the only faction that offers that in this hostile galaxy.

now, if somebody could direct me to this awesome community i keep reading about in this thread, that'd be great (i just started playing last week)

As OP said, space feudalism is not my thing, and I like the fact they aren't ********.

However, as soon as Clan Wolf comes around (assuming you can declare allegiance to them)... goodbye
