Unfortunately, it looks like the petition for a safer form of power generation will go unheard. The reactor is later destroyed during an orbital bombardment in 3067 causing severe radioactive contamination on the scale of a nuclear weapon.

Ironically, if it's "centuries old" it's probably safer than anything built on Succession Wars-era Tech1...

It's a "headline", or a "future-tweet".

That's a damn fine reactor if it is that old, lasts that long and is nuclear, not fusion. All the BattleMechs use fusion reactors and have since the Mackie was born... Go ITER! (iter.org)

BT timeline says GM produces the first commercial unit in 2020. More likely it will be GE..
But the ITER reactor is scheduled for first plasma in 2019. So good job FASA!

NOTE: I am not stupid enough to believe that a commercial unit will be developed or available anywhere within years of first plasma from the largest research project. Still, it's exciting.

Why would they want that? That is like asking for all the battlemechs to not be on the planet. It is insane. Besides if the reactor goes boom and contaminates the underground water supply of the planet they could make the planet DUNE! Then they can all move to Earth. Melissa is now the First Lord of the Star League!

Oh, so it is so good, but they are in war with us (blame Davions) and thus can't rebuy new parts?

It is the same as the Davion one. Now I understand how Steiners got rich.

Reason

Yeah, pillows and teddies are simply better. :P

P.S. But I agree you are 20% cooler than the whole Battletech merchandise combined.

When TechManual is describing how fusion reactors do NOT go nuclear (usually), it brings this up. Turns out that the actual explosion is sodium coolant, and the resulting chemical explosion caused the mushroom cloud. The radiation was from some nearby tanks of molten salt holding radioactive materials. Over the years, Tharkad Power & Heat had expanded the fusion reactor facility to include a hazardous-wast treatment plant. Baaad move, TP&H.
