The goal of my project was to prove that any mech can look cool. It all started because some of my friends would not play with certain mechs in table top games because "they don't look cool". I wanted to show people that when I flipped through a TRO, I saw much more than what was on the page. My friend challenged me to re-design or update all the mechs in the 3025 TRO. Of course, mechs like the Vulcan and Quickdraw were the first ones I was told to tackle. So I did it, we had good times geeking out on mech semantics. The Phoenix Hawk and Crusader were re-designed before the phoenix project came out. Many people are bothered by the whole lawsuit situation with the unseen mechs. I tried my hand at re-designing the unseens but still keeping the overall shape of the original. I did make a locust that looked like a walking apache attack helicopter, I'm trying to find it. Some of these drawings go back eight years or so.

straight up mate, that is mechgasmic.. I am very serious when i say this design concept should be the basis for the MWO ingame Urban Mech... dear PGI, please heed our call and make this happen...and hire this guy while your at it so someone else doesn't get his talent..

Why is noone redesigning Shadow Hawk? I could forget about most of the original look (which is, hands down, a bit too anime), but the re-seen version is an insult to the mech itself. If someone tried to remake it, it could get a plausible design. But no, everyone has to remake 1000s of Marauders just to see them burried in a lot of criticism. Posted Image

Any kind of LAM (Land-Air-Mech) should be kept out of the game through sheer lore fluff.

They were to ineffective to be of any use and only one factory existed through the succession wars until the clans arrived. Who promtly captured the place and started building standard clan mechs instead.

A good example is the Stinger who apparently only had about 5000 existing mechs around 3025 and spare parts were scarce.

Now look at the Inner Sphere maps. Now spread out those 5000...then you add wear and tear for another 25 years of war...

You are not gonna see a lot of those mechs around except in a collectors garage or a museum.

You truly have talent and I am quickly becoming a fan of your artwork. My favorite so far is the Sentinel. I would really like to see your redesign of a WARHAMMER. Strange that nobody else requested it. Next to the Marauder or Timber Wolf it is one of the most iconic 'Mechs in the game and one of my personal favorites.

Shortpainter, could you do a series on Clan 'Mechs?

It would be my genuine pleasure to do a repaint job on a Loki by Shortpainter! :P

Keep up the good work!

While I'm loving Shortpainter's work, some mechs just don't need a redesign :) .

Perfection.

(not that I would oppose to a nice pic of the aforementioned all the same)

Both the Ostroc and Ostsol are amazing redesigns. The sentinel is by far the best rework vs the old design. The original artwork just looked so awkward to me.

If you have the time or the want can you tackle the Ostscout Shortpainter?

The Centurion is another great piece of work. Not so much a recreation but a representation of the mech in SP's style. The missile launcher is a little thin. This is by far better than Alexis centurion. It gets the proportion of the mech exactly right.

I would really like to see what a mech looked like if Alex and Shortpainter colaberated.

Amazing work in here. I was just scribbling some of my own unseen redesigns. I'm going to have to redo them all, thanks Short Painter! :)

(to be fair, they were just starting points. Kinda happy with the Warhammer that I've done so far though.

So much great work, but there's so long time ago since the last work of Shorty comes around...
I really hope you can make some other Redesigns!
And between us, your work is still the best!

On the other hand though, the "original" Marauder's dorsal gun looks like it could house a whole other mech. Hollander is built around a gauss rifle smaller than that.

Looks perfect for a puny AC that has as much firepower as a medium laser to me, but hey, a matter of taste. Redesigns here are pure solid gold though.

yeah, the original had one too large, but let's pause for a moment and remember this.. that AC on top weighs 8 tons, or over 10% of the entire mech.. it SHOULD be relatively massive.

Regardless, there is something.. almost too Hussar/Falconer ish to the limb placement for me to get behind that re-design, despite generally being in awe of SP's work. Especially the mechanical details that mix that anime feel with the blue collar grit.
But I have always been pretty darn picky about the Marauder and it's redesigns, (I have, possibly said some unkind things about the version Shimmering Sword does also, soooooooooo) and n the end, no one will design one that gratifies everybody, because it is such a dynamic design, that it will always elicit the love/hate reflex, and you have that small percentage that can't get over the whole "it's unseen timmy, so unless we change it to a signifigant degree, it aint NEVER gonna show up", and drool over the original Macross one and refuse any substitutes.
Shimmering Sword version (too bulky looking, would make an excellent Marauder II, IMO though)
Posted Image

Flying Debris (quick sketch style, kinda too Crabbish for me)
Posted Image

Short Painter's take (I think my biggest "gripe" beside the cannon is the canopy doesn't just forward enough to grab the canon feel and description. It doesn't feel... menacing to me.)
Posted Image

Along with a couple versions I did (I really wish I had Shimmering's skill with the color and texture, these guys make me feel like a scrub in Junior High School all over again. Anyhow, what I lack in talent I tried to make up with "better scaling/believable" actuator packages, etc)
original too skinny version
Posted Image
buffed remodel (More, to my mind, how one would look after the slow decline of the Succession Wars)
Posted Image
"Cleaned Up" Model (More akin to how a shiny Star League original might look)
Posted Image
Show the radically differing approaches taken, and pretty much all have had real split decisions.

That said... I honestly would be happy to take ANY of them, or an amalgamation of all the above, if it would get the Marauder, and the rest of the Unseens somehow into the game.

Nice collection of Marauders. Each take has a pretty cool element worth exploring. Also, I'd like to throw my ring into the Reseen Marauder hat.

I like it. I tend to find the symmetry of the arms farther back a little more pleasing (and easier to balance) while also separating the silhouette from the Unseen, but I really dig the basic leg design on yours, and the upper arm assembly, even if I would probably push em back some.

I think the Macross/Unseen Marauder is the only time I ever saw that design element pulled off without looking totally ungainly (and IMO, the Loose version in the old 3025 was the best take I ever saw of the "original" version.)

Also think your AC proportions are just about where they should be, not too big, but not too tiny.

I almost wanna start (except I would like to pin em) Topics threads dedicated to fan art re-designs, and homages to each of the Unseen, in the hopes that maybe with enough ideas out there, Flying Debris could slap together a "legally" acceptable render of the Unseens that still pay homage to the original.

Yes.. I really want my Unseen mechs.....

So I'm checking out shortpainter's marauder now and...
Can I see it from a higher angle? I'm fluctuating between disliking and thinking it's awesome... Needs more facets, a little streamlining and a different cockpit design from where I stand, but a fantastic take nontheless.

edit:
I believe Cutterwolf's additions to your original Marauder artwork is a great step in the right direction, could you expand on that if you're still working on them?

First off let me say your work is very impressive to say the least. And your on the right track when it comes to a good redesign for the Marauder that players will know is a Marauder but will not violate copy right laws should MWO decide to use it. I took the liberty of adding to your drawing to give you some ideas on how to give it that "intimidation" factor it needs. I beefed up the lower legs, changed cockpit design, beefed up upper gun and added details and I extended the shoulder guards and added in a few other little details. The main thing is that all it needs is some girth in the right spots :)

Bump.

Again love the work.

Would love to see the the AC back on Top. Though I wonder how they would do it in MWO as you could not fit a ballistic slot in the center torso to hold an AC5; I would immediately rip out and put a Guass rifle.
