Named after Arpad Elo - it's not an acronym.

^^^ This
I dont' see the ELO system as being a fix-all on its own though. Until they implement at the very least an actual tonnage calculator on drops we still get mismatch potential due to an Awesome being equal to an Atlas in the MM system now. The mismatches don't typically occur as badly when it's one or two mechs in this situation but 8 atlases against 8 awesomes is a gross mismatch that is completely viable in the current system. So I'm HOPING that they add in some other parameters to the MM system as well

What does ELO stand for?

a stat based and BV based method while taking into consideration tonnage is what I am kind of hoping for.

I guess that is one of the chess community's pet peeves - people using it like it's an acronym.

Which is how your post came across and thus my reply, sorry :)

If you were seriously asking that question then yes; they mean a matchmaking system based on the Elo rating system.

I don't think giant robots fighting will benefit all that much from complicated stat tracking.

Well whatever it is reffering to, it worked for me last night!
Yes it took a lot longer to get a match but when i did get a match the games were a lot better balanced making it a much more enjoyable experience.
no more getting completeley owned for 10 matches on the trott.

for a solo player like me this was very much needed and is a very wellcome change.

I played a couple of matches as PUG this morning to look at the changes of the Patch and hmmm... Elo? Where? One match vs. 7 founders and 1 Lonewolf... On my side not one founder and only one who wore the steiner colors proudly. You can imagine the result?

Yes: 8:0 loss with me on second place in our ranks with barely 100 damage and the other team from 200 up. That is that fabulous elo? Yes I know that being a founder is not a reliable indication for skill... but the constellation was so familiar with many many matches before that elo thing.

The Game felt like the days/weeks before. Sometimes you loose and sometimes the others win...

The devs managed to FAIL, AGAIN, so they rolled back the matchmaker changes. Now we get to wait a MONTH before we get it back.

I'd much rather wait some mins for better matching. It was just fine yesterday night.

Premaders (talking about the 4 man punks) dislike the new Elo so it must be good. Kinda sad that it messed up the game for the true 8 man que players. Lets hope they fix that when they roll it out again.

I just played a game on Alpine map. on our side we had catapults, jagermechs, cataphracts and a hunchback. The other side had 2 lights, a stalker and heavies. doesnt seem fair for such a big map. lights rushed our base while we were in the middle

It will take a while for the majority of the player base to even begin finding their place in the ELO scoring system due to the 50 point maximum swing that can take place, and I'd bet that the majority of us are only swapping 25 points.

Why and how does that, can that, matter? Well, if one assumes that we do not/will not fight against a team that is, for example, more than 200 points above or below us then we see that at most (or least) there is a 24.09% chance of the lower ranked team to win (assuming a 1500 rank versus a 1300 rank or similar score deviation).

That 24.09% chance and the 50 point cap means that the 1500 team stands to gain only 13 points or, should they be beaten, lose 37 points. The 1300 team is looking at the reverse; a loss of 13 points should they lose but a gain of 37 points should they win. As we see there will be some "score creep" at the widest margins and this could lead to a large number of players not ranking up or down quickly enough to not be matched against much higher skilled (and presumably, higher ranked) players during these first few weeks and months.

FWIW - Substitute the percentage for any number, divide the max cap by that (50 in this case), and those are roughly the points the teams are playing for. I say "roughly" because there has been only the barest explanation and example of MWO ELO scoring posted and therefore we do not know what other factors may go into the ELO score adjustment.

Given that there is a large player base and the ELO system has relatively just been implemented (as well as new players arriving each day) it will still take several more weeks (months) before we see a wide distribution in ELO ranking across the entire player base.

As with all the features in this game we should be prepared to sit back, take a deep breath, relax, and remind ourselves "It's just a game".

it pretty much means if you have bad teammates consistently you will be stuck with them no matter how well you perform

i especially like how close to 50% it's keeping my win rate because my match rotation goes like this close game-get steamrolled-steamroll-close game-etc etc

it's really screwing up my stats, so good job i guess. before elo i was getting decent teams most games.

The MM suck really much, no balance actually, and 9vs9 is not enough for this mods, need to be 24vs24 mini or just put a team deathmatch no other mods cause all players just rush to attack ennemy and forget to cap or other...
