I lost half a ton of armor and I had to remove one of the 3 med-lazers, but it still performs its role, and has a higher BV than the Orion.
(Orion was my measuring stick, even if the mechs had different roles :))

I just looked at the wiki. They did have endo-steel and ferro-fib before 3049. Endo steel was re-invented by 3035, and ferro-fiberous was re-invented by 3040. They also re-invented AMS by 3040. :)

They were and they weren't... there's a long way between "we can make this" and "mass production" - and many pieces were faction-exclusive for a while afterwords. The Ultra AC-10 was an FWL rediscovery, Arrow IV missiles to Liao, AMS was rebuilt by Davion.

The devs will have to decide what toys we get. Will be interested to see what sorts of advanced tech they give us and when

Overview:
Ghostspotter GSR-X1
This Low profile mech is one of the few mechs that is shorter than a UrbanMech.
the Few who have see the mech says it looks like a an Oversize Gauss Rifle
Round with legs. Only a hand full of reports have come in on this mech,
normally right before a Large number of Long Tom and Arrow IV rounds start
hitting an area. Due to local area Jam we know it has an ECM also to due the
Artillery extra high accuracy a Tag laser has also been spotted. No Other
weapon systems have been noted as of yet. The one time a Locust tried to give
chase it the number of Artillery Rounds that hit the Locust did not leave much
of the Locust for the Salvage teams.

This mech Has only been see on the out edge of the Inner Sphere between Free
Worlds League & Lyran Commonwealth

For the record, this is just something i made for fun and has zero bearing on the project.
also, went Dark age era in SSW, cause i couldn't think of any era in particular. but the only advanced things in it is the quad turrets and mechanical jump boosters

What i was imagining was a relatively robust anti air quad mech that could bunker down in mountainous, potentially forested areas and make the lives of ASFs and conventional aircraft very difficult while itself being rather difficult to root out. In order to avoid starting unwanted fires or giving away its position from maneuvering over difficult terrain, it is equipped with mechanical jump boosters instead of jump jets. It has a dual turret setup with an ac5 and er medium laser in each turret. guardian ecm makes its location difficult to pin point, and a laser AMS system makes it difficult to destroy via missile attacks. However to make room for the ecm, sacrifices needed to be made to the cockpit size, resulting in rather cramped conditions. 4 tons of ammo, half of which is dedicated flak ammo, ensure that the ac5 can operate for extended periods of time. Both ammo bins are protected by CASE. 12 tons of armor provide considerable protection for its weight class.

a couple quick varients

the 3050 catapult with the arrow IV... remove 5 SHS replace with DHS 10(20) add additional arrow IV ammo (no 5 missiles are NOT enough)
MAD-5D varient remove case srm2 streak and 1 ton ammo, add 3 additional DHS, or additional standard medium lasers
MAD-5S varient downgrade Medium Pulse Lasers back to standard medium lasers add 2 tons additional gauss ammo (24 rounds is MUCH better than 8 )

and for a "full mech"

The Rifleman RFL-5N varient is the result of the design team going back to the drawing board after the quick refit was performed (upgrading the ac5's to ultras) swapping in 12 DHS XL engine etc, and noting that while it is highly effective the AC-5 series cannons have always been the result of a compromise to keep heat under control. upon reviewing the capabilities of the Double heat sinks they discovered that 16 "freezers" should be able to keep 4 of the standard magna Mk III Heavy Lasers cool enough to maintain a constant rate of fire. As an experiment they brought a standard RFL-3N Rifleman into a bay where they dismounted the 2 imperator-A autocannons, and replaced them with an additional pair of Magna Mk III heavy lasers this change of course allowed the removal of the ammo bin freeing up a total of 7 tons, 6 additional freezer heat sinks were mounted, and the remaining ton was used to add additional armor plating, unlike the RFL-5M design team who added the armor as a thick plate on the back of the unit, the RFL-5N uses the additional armor somewhat differently, the head assembly's armor is thickened by ~30% over the -3N standard, an equivalant amount of additional plating is added to each arm to protect the lasers, additionally an equivalant amount of plating is added to the front side torso's bringing the armor on the arms and front side torsos to just over a ton each instaid of just under a ton, the remaining armor is used to reinforce the leg armor increasing the leg armor by 25% over the standard -3N's configuration. While these changes degrade the need for the Magna Mk II Medium Lasers as backup weaponry the design team chose to leave them in place even though 1 engineer noted that their removal would allow for the possibility of further increasing the armor by almost 24% which would have been a 40% increase over the -3N's configuration. Suggestions for incorperating other advanced technologies such as the XL engine refit of the -5M project, or going to a ferro-fibrous armor composite or even an endosteel chassis were disgarded due to lack of available materials, and funding.

Hey, lemme dig up something from my folders. SSW is always fun to play around with in your free time, endlessly designing mechs both optimized and intentionally flawed. But this one is a little special.

Its actually the Warhound from the upcoming Starcraft 2 HoTS. People noticed it looked kinda like a ghetto Warhammer, which it kinda is. Same armor, speed, weight... There are a few versions that add Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous, but this is the lowest tech version to match the Warhammer exactly.

*Edit: Oh, this isn't the lowest tech version; that uses a standard AC/10 and a machinegun in place of the AMS. Can't seem to find the entry in SSW though. Odd.*

I believe another factor in choosing a machine to be a 'winner' is Fluff. Mechs come to be for a reason, and not every mech is as successful as the people who designed them intended them to be. Of course, that's part of what gives the mech a part of its character. Not all designs were popular among pilots or successor states. As an example, I was in a competition over on Solaris7 two years back for a trio of designs as they expanded through the years. I used this as the first part of 3 entries. I considered my fluff weak on that one, mind you.

On which note, here is what I have so far. I will be using Introductory tech for this. Sure, ER PPCs and Large Lasers are cropping up, Double Heat Sinks are making a come back, and Lostech is fair game, but sometimes it just needs to be cheap.

Oh ho.

I figured out the new Atlas design by Mr. Iglesias. I was having trouble fitting in the weapons to fill up the tonnage, until I realized that I could have used Medium Pulse Lasers instead! Now this beast is a walking-heat-neutral brawler when not using its LRMs.

Ooo, fun. I love a design exercise. Score, using SSW and limiting to 3049 it still comes out legal. The LB 10-X AC was back by then, although the other calibers weren't. Although the fluff doesn't fit ...

Built by HildCo Interplanetary in collaboration with Ceres Metals Industries, the FRB-0A Freebooter is HildCo's first offering in the medium category. Constructed on a Ceresplex IV chassis shared by the Blackjack, the Freebooter is designed to be a highly mobile, well armored weapons platform. The Freebooter has the added benefit of being constructed with materials produced on St. Ives. The massive 300 Vlar XL engine it shares with the Pillager pushes the Freebooter to a max speed of 97.2 km/h. Six HildCo Model 10 Jumpjets, mounted in the legs and side torsos, give it a jumping range of 180 meters. 10 double strength heatsinks internal to the engine provide the cooling needed to let the Freebooter run cool, like its larger brother the Pillager, and 10.5 tons of Starshield Standard armor give it excellent protection for its weight.A CeresCom Recon Model 12K communication suite and a C-Apple Churchill targeting system round out its electronics.

The weapons suite of the FRB-0A consists of a torso mounted StarCorps Industries Imperator Code Red LB 10-X AC with two tons of ammunition and a trio of Ceres Arms medium lasers mounted in the center torso and head. The arms of the Freebooter are free of weapons and vital equipment, and have fully articulated hands to perform punch attacks or collect battlefield salvage.

What i was imagining was a relatively robust anti air quad mech that could bunker down in mountainous, potentially forested areas and make the lives of ASFs and conventional aircraft very difficult while itself being rather difficult to root out. Both ammo bins are protected by CASE. 12 tons of armor provide considerable protection for its weight class.
