Commando: What's The Point?

With the commandos repair costs being extremely low this tactic works well without harming my earnings, even if I die. The rest is up to my team being able to cleanup.

^ This.
Well, some of it anyway. I don't think it will be obselete as it will still likely be the cheapest Mech in the game and will still be the fastest way to Free players to stop using trials. But I will say that I like my Commando. I do a lot fo stupid stuff in it like draw attention of much larger Mechs away from the mediums and heavies on my team. I run with 2 SRM 6 and 2 small lasers. It's a decidedly ineffective build against other scouts, but I have blasted more than my fair share of other Commandos and Ravens with it.
The problem is getting efficient kills because ammo runs out ans SRM 6 are kind of like firing a shotgun. They're really ineffective unless you're 50m or less from target. But to be in a Commando and brag about your kills, well it's just something everyone has to take with a grain of salt. Sure you can get 4 or 5 kills in a Commando, when there are 4 other Mechs shooting at whatever you're hitting. K/D is not the way to rank the Commando. It's not a Mech many people fear, but if you use it properly you can really turn the tide of a battle with it as people get annoyed with their armor getting sandpapered off start to chase you. Also, makes that next Gauss, PPC or large laser hit that much more devastating.
Being as how I pug all the time, in a match where we actually win, if I haven't done 200 dmg or more and gotten 4 or more assists, I haven't done my job. Yes, a Jenner is much, much more dangerous. Perhaps a Raven as well, but I don't like the Mech much so I don't know. But I don't think I'd trade in my Commando for a Jenner ever. I don't even mind the dying...

Light mechs are for recon work, finding out where the main enemy force is, relaying that info to the friendly heavier mechs, etc.
The problem is that we dont currently have a complete universe play style that supports all classes of mechs. We will eventually, specially on the 2XL maps that are coming.

But here's the kicker: A 'mech is only ever as good or bad as its pilot. A great pilot that's comfortable with a Commando will do great in that Commando.
I'm a terrible, terrible assault or heavy pilot. I'm almost detrimental to my team when in those 'mechs. I'm okay as a medium pilot, I can hold my own in a Centurion. But put me in a Commando - a 'mech I have dropped in several hundred times in all sorts of load-outs, and I'll likely be a positive contribution to any team I'm on.
I've had lots of matches where I've taken out ten times my own weight - and not only in cripples either. I've gone up one against two, one against three and come out on top. In my Commando I fear no 'mech on the battlefield - excepting perhaps a StreakCat; those things are mean and I tend to let someone else grab their attention.
And you know what? I can't do any of those things in a Jenner, because I don't like driving them. I don't like the way they move, the way the cockpit looks, the fact that I have no arms... I just don't like them.
But a Commando... Oh boy! Those little things are FUN! And used correctly they can be as deadly as any other 'mech on the field.
As for what they can do that a Jenner cannot, I can only say: Help me have fun and win matches for my team.

Less armor, less speed, less weapons. With no working ECM or BAP, anything that you could bring with the Commando is made void. And what you could do with the Commando can be done with the Jenner with all of the prior mentioned benefits.

Mind that the Jenner equips a 200 engine to go ~113, if I'm not mistaken. The Commando can do the same with a 175 engine.
In other words, in terms of engine speed, you actually get more bang for your buck with the Commando. I smile and giggle with my coms since I bought a 190 engine, bringing the thing up to 123 KPH. W/ EE and DHS, I can effectively mount all of the same things as before, but with the faster engine. In doing so, I can go faster than the base Jenner. Which, I will tell you, is fun. Really fun. I've noticed that it's hard for others to hit me when I go that fast

Not saying the Jenner can't do better if it goes down the same path. Just saying, yes, you can in fact go faster than a Jenner, for the same price of a Jenner, without actually buying a Jenner. And be happy

Now, if we bring in the Raven, heh. Heh heh. Commando all the way, baby.

That is just wrong.
One on one in a brawl a Jenner will kill an Atlas 80% of the time or more.
1. You can't kill what you can't hit, you can't hit what is behind you.
2. Your back armor is not significantly stronger than the Jenners front armor.
Light mechs are cavalry. Highly mobile with disproportionately high damage for their weight. They take objectives, gang up on engaged mechs and destroy artillery.

Yes, but how does the commando do better on those maps than a Jenner? As things currently stand, in that situation the commando would go scout. Find the enemy. Get chased down and killed by a Jenner.

No, it has nothing to do with playstyle, or 'it works for me.'
i got 3 commandos. It's a terrible mech, and inferior to the other lights. Less guns, less tons, less hardpoints total. It doesn't even get jets. While it's true it should be competing against other ancient gundams, like the stinger and wasp, they're not in the game, and probably won't be.
By the time the firebee rolled out, commando was lorewise horrible. The one thing it had, the massive firepower, was copied by a heavier mech, with jets, that sets enemies on fire.

This. If the game didn't treat every Mech below Assault as equal; things might be different. But currently, the Commando is a junk Mech that offers nothing but the lowest possible repair bill. But honestly... buy a Jenner instead. Jenner is faster and with more armor/weapons. There is NO contest.

If you guys don't like it, too bad. I won't play a mech I dislike piloting just because the user based meta demands that I do.

Good for you? Fyi you're handicapping yourself and your team for a rather stupid reason... you don't even see the Mech you're in once in a game.

Okay.
Do you remember when tonnage mattered even more, and people would leg commandos once the game started, because they DARED bring a useless gundam that takes slots away from their side?
I do.

Yes, I'm handicapping myself by getting kills, supporting the brawlers and helping my team win.
I don't care if its not the absolute optimum way to do that, it works. And thats good enough for me and my team.
