For everyone mad about being on "team stupid" - try opening the map and clicking on "TAKE COMMAND". Then command, see if people move to the designated position, sometimes it reduces the chaos.
Give everyone a yellow icon to go to and most of the time people will go there, still may not win a fight but the odds are better.
Oh, how I've tried. They, with good intentions, I'm sure, go to the marker. They wait for a bit while we group up. My hopes rise. Then they go all Rambo, crest the ridge or whatever and get themselves killed.
If you can not beat the enemy team, two things are possible:
1. The enemy 4-man group is better than yours. -> You do not deserve to win.
2. Your 4-man group is worse than the PUGs. -> You do not deserve to win.
Also, even if you are in a 4-man group, you do not currently go up against another 4-man group. Likewise, you may also end up dropping against two 4-man groups that ended up dropping at the same time.
Personally? I used to advocate training and encouraging PUGs so that they would improve, but now I really just wish they'd all go away. They're untrainable and genetically incompetent. See sig.

lights arent special
Yeah... um... no.
Any scout, worth their salt, will first figure out where the enemy is and where they're moving. Next, they will need to make tactical choices with information you don't and can't have in the main-body.

Scouts are not just dps.
Scouts are awesome DPS. They just approach it differently. And by "differently", I mean "blitzkrieg into an enemy formation, scatter it, take some select shots, and bug out before they can get more than a couple grazing hits".
Telling lights (scouts) to stay with the group is ... well it's counter to their role in a group.
However, good scouts also know that being too far serperated is a bad thing. Scouting is much more effective if you're close enough to disengage and get support. A dead scout doesn't help. (other than he can report "um ... there was a bunch of guys at G3".) I find I'm at my most effective (also survive more) if I stay within 1.5-2 grid units of the main group of my team (and they actually support me) beyond that and I'll usually end up scrap metal with little or nothing to show for it in the end. Better pilots than I can roam farther out of course and that comes down to the last point of my gripe with some scouts (including myself on occasion) - know your limitations.
how many times do i have to say it, STAY TOGETHER!!!!!! you too lights!!!
Sir, yes Sir! Shall I also hold off on firing my TAG laser until you fire the first shot? I wouldn't want to go all Team Stupid by not following dutifully 3 steps behind you or anything silly like using my Scout Mech to, oh, scout things out.
Yeah, I think I've got the real problem figured out.
There is a danger in using absolutes (like "always")--there is only one common factor in ALL of your matches. You.
In a more pertinent line of response to your original post, I would suggest joining a clan/corp/guild and playing with Teamspeak. At the very least, you'll end up with 3 less stupids on your team. In another week you'll have 7 less stupids; probably an option worth exploring.
I love the statements of "team speak" or "group up". Whatever for?
I personally love the randomity that comes with four teammates running to the corner of the map furthest from the enemy, then running back, while our base is being capped by three Atlas who "somehow" made it past our front line.
I suppose that's what I live for; 90% of the time it's an early dirtnap as 75% of the team has died despite your clear instructions not to crest the ridge, the other 8% of the time its me running to some corner as the only survivor against a full eight mechs standing (with the most-damaged enemy at 89%).
But there's that one golden game when you get 3 kills, 4 assists and manage to duke it out with a full health awesome with one leg missing on your mech that just make you sit back for a moment and say, "I love this show".
Keep trying. I don't think even a PUG would consider anything you just stated as good advice.
Wait. Maybe that's why they're dying in droves...
Well i, for one, win 55-60% of my pug drops simply by saying "stick together" or "go to this waypoint" or even "dont go anywhere just defend" for someone who doesnt have the frame of mind to attempt a plan because these pugs are "beneath them" I think this is probably your best option (it works for me when noone seems interested in listening or following the shiny way points but what can i say?) its definitely better than your plan of "just do things on my own and blame the pugs for all of my shortcomings"...

It's the pug life, we're livin' it! This too is what I like in pugs. I already know by default that I could get seven guys onside who just signed up today but the games where it really comes together are kick-burro. I'm looking to sign on to a unit eventually but for now it's Giant Robot Valhalla.
Yeah sure! And while we lights stay with your slow hunk of junk, making ourself easy targets, the enemy can go wherever he wants, without us knowing. Knowledge is half way to victory. We provide it for you.
you are almost there... its like your brain started firing and then just suddenly died...
they can be anywhere yes, but the only place they can hurt us is in our base, and guess what, we'll know if they go there.... honestly scouting in this game is useless, the maps are so effing small, you can practically see acrouss the map...
and those lights talking about "ill scout" they literally have no idea what the term scouting means.... Scouting does not mean, ill go full blast until i find the enemy and then fight them... it means keeping your distance from enemys, branching out from your main group but staying within range, AND NOT GETTING INTO FIGHTS!!!! that is what the main group is for.... sure, find the enemy if you think it makes a difference, then get back with your wingman!!!!
this is how i feel... I feel like ICEMAN!!! ICEMAN living in a world of MAVERICKS
Generally speaking, 50% of the players in a match are on the winning team.
Also, anyone who thinks "stick together" is a battle plan is drain bamaged. It's obvious that some mechs should stick together. But information on the enemy movements is more important. Cohesion from PuG groups is a diceroll anyway.
The problem isn't that people don't stick together, it's that people all peel off to chase the Jenner that shows up 1 minute into the march and you have a couple of assaults who are left at midfield alone to get mauled, then the mediums get chewed up tring to make up for the sudden loss of 180T-280T from the field.
The problem is -target priority- more than anything else.
Also, if you're an LRM mech - make a note of desginating a position you will take up at match start. You'd be surprised how often people will follow you if you give them indication of an area you will provide fire support for.

so first you say sticking together is brain dead strategy... then you say the problem is that people dont stick together
