Haha, no problem. Unfortunately there are quite a few tabletop votes that are now lost in the internet...

Yep...plenty of girls playing video games, but I think a mech sim lends itself more to the male side of things...

We have a vote for female...
Someone among us is a LIAR!

I know 3 or 4 gals here on MWO. One of whom runs one of the Merc companies. So they do indeed exist.

I don't think it's anything intrinsic about the game that makes it such a sausagefest. I think it has more to do with how old the franchise is, as well as the comparatively high average age.

Generally speaking, female gamers are a new phenomenon, and a lot of us, being relatively new to gaming at all, tend toward more mainstream titles with a lower learning curve--not because we are female, but because we are new. Many are not as deep into the culture, so to speak, and Mechwarrior is currently out of the spotlight for mainstream gamers (though with the 'Year of the Mech' coming up and whatnot, it will be again, for better or worse)-- but right now, as the poll shows, most people beta-testing this have been familiar with this franchise for many years, which would have been before the rise in female gamers.

It is possible that we'll see a small influx of female gamers when this goes live, as many FGs are starting to head toward more challenging ground, and this game will be noticed by players of the clump of other mechlike titles due out next year, a lot of which are more gamelike and less simlike (thus a lower learning curve.) Especially if we have a decent tutorial at that time, I'd bet many would stick around as well.

This is anecdotal, but being a FG and knowing quite a few, a lot of us are sick of getting pandered to by 'female-friendly' titles and the idea of being in a giant, destructive, genderless mech is really appealing. At least to me.

Good perspective for sure from TreeFrog. I made my "male side of things" comment based on my wife, who just rolls her eyes when I talk about mechwarrior. She is far more analytical than I am, so it's not due to the fact that optimizing a mech is more of a technical task...she just doesn't find playing a mech simulator appealing, or a flight simulator, or a tank simulator, or any sort of vehicle pilot game. She grew up playing final fantasy, chronotrigger, and secret of mana on SNES and her gaming preference is toward titles that have a bit more character development. We play a fair bit of League of Legends together and it's a good midpoint for our respective gaming interests.

Good point aspect. I actually don't find playing any other kind of simulator appealing, it's mainly the idea of the role-based warfare that intrigues me. I like the different mechs and their varied playstyles as a concept, and would like to get into the teamspeak games so I can get the full teamwork aspect of the game. I'm just starting to get into all of MW and BT's lore, which also adds a lot to the experience.

I've played League, my boyfriend has encouraged me to play more so we can play together but right now he'd just stomp my face in (he's a very skilled lvl 30 player, and I'm still mucking up bot matches, lol) It's awesome that you can play together.

Yeah she got her brother and I into it a month or two ago...we are levels 21-27 and play a match or two a day on average. If you guys want some 5v5 buddies let me know, we've been trying to find a couple others to play with on a somewhat regular basis...

Geeze, you guys sure are sticklers for absolute accuracy in this poll....edited once again, now with options to express precisely how many games you have played along with whether or not you have played tabletop.

Because it's f'in important! We all have nothing else to do than wait for the patch on the 20th and now you give us a poll that doesn't allow everyone to give exact feedback about his very personal and loving time spent with Battletech/Mechwarrior!

Only 1 person under 20 so far...interesting.

Not particularly, mainly because forum goers will likely not be of the under 20 demo. These polls are self selecting and given the limited pool (the forumites) what you have gotten so far kinda confirms what I would have expected.. Mostly male mid 20's-late 30's.

You must not post on a lot of video game forums...

Look up KidFromBastion, he's a great jungle but does any role well. If I get to the point where you'd actually want to play with me on your team, WideEyedLegless is my name on League. He had a group of friends he was able to 5v5 with, but because of different things few of them can play regularly anymore, so he'd probably be happy to have you. Ha, tell him TreeFrog sent you.

Will do...we are not particularly competitive and tend to change roles/champions/gametypes on a very regular basis depending on what we feel like. You would be more than welcome to join as an inexperienced player...like I said we've only been playing for a month or two (and it's also the first MOBA game any of us have played).

Allow me to correct/clarify my statement.

My (very jaded) experience on (a number of) game related forums has been that depending on the type of game you will have a certain audience that shows up (your demo question). Console games more than any other type are likely to have a slightly younger audience, however Mechwarrior being an older IP, more simulator like than most FPS, and a semi-serious Sci-fi is less likely to draw a large crowd of under 20 gamers to the forums.

It has also been my experience that the under 20 members are more likely to only/primarily post as flame bait/ trolls/ or not respond constructively, this includes honestly answering polls or even bothering to participate.

So perhaps i should not say 'forum-goers' but 'productive forum members' on a per capita basis (within each demographic), and considering the subject material, are more likely to be exactly what your poll shows based on my expectation..

EDIT: *DISCLAIMER* if my description doesn't fit you i'm not talking about you. I do not mean to malign anyone with my above statement it is simply the experiences of one individual through the lens of deep seated cynicism.
