yeah, Russ mentions that in the podcast. I highly recommend listening to it, the 3rd person view part is at 19:00-23:00. I have a transcription here: http://www.reddit.co...g_a_3rd_person/

Honestly, this game does need more players, and, for some more work they can have the game appeal to a whole different demographic of people - the CoD/BF people. I begin to see this as less problematic if they give us the option to play against those in first or third person views to segregate the player experiences for us. Can this end up being a problem because of the segregation - yes, it is possible.
They are basically able to create 2 games in one, which will appeal to 2 different demographics and will greatly widen the appeal for the game and help its success
That being said, will I play 3rd person and do I want it.. NO!
The real answer for new pilots is a comprehensive tutorial with client side practice arena, and stat based match making, which will educate the newbs and keep them together while they are learning and keep them from getting ROFLstomped
Just a few thoughts.
The CoD people aren't playing this game, and never will play this game, because they want CoD. It's like how you don't try to get the Mario kart audience to play your actual car simulator.
You're never going to see CoD kiddies in this game, 3rd person or not. They're doing this just to port more of world of tanks, in an attempt to lure in more russians and scandinavians - who are playing this game BECAUSE THEY'RE BORED OF WORLD OF TANKS in the first place.
If I wanted to play world of tanks, I'd go play it. It has community warfare, and everything else this is supposed to have 'on release.' I don't need to put up with bait-and-switches. It's P2W, and they know it is. Golden ammo, grind out uber tanks with premium time, third person, simulated damage to systems....

My wife has never played an fps, or anything even remotely similar to MWO in any way. Yet i told her what the keys do and what the mouse does and she was playing really well within her first three games.
Personally i want to play a mech sim (i actually wish it was more sim than it is) and not an arcade shooter.

3rd person is another situation where pgi developes some crap that no one wants (4% by poll); while failing to implement the simplest game features such as basic AI which is required for a tutorial/training ground or base defenses; while failing to fix the fundamental pillars of pvp that are clean server code, quality matchmaking, and stability;
just.... lol....
OK on a suspicious note. Notice how player count has been removed from the lobby since OB? I have a feeling the numbers aren't anywhere near what they want... and possibly near the same as CB. A move like introducing 3rd person reeks of desperation.

Different genre's. MWO is supposed to be a sim and having a magical invisible camera 10 meters behind your mech does not mix with a sim. Side note, the vast majority of shooters are in fact first person - especially the less casual ones.

Yeah, I really don't want the option of third person for everyone, partly for that reason.
What I'm suggesting splits neither of those, but rather splits off a trial queue for third person. I'm saying lock premades/lone wolf to first person only and give just trials the option of third person, splitting off those very new players.

They all died.
All of them died.
They all died because of third person. This is fact. It's been known for as long as the franchise has existed. Pop-tarting, seeing around corners, not moving, boating, legging - you should know this.

the game can be destroyed and keep going just fine. i dont think anyone thinks it will end the game, but it does destroy immersion and the sim part totally. its just not what we want./

Except it ruined MW4's multiplayer, because of the stupid jumpjetting sniping out of cover, only to drop back into it.

This stuff isn't going to happen in competitive play and you'll be able to opt out of it with a single check box. 3rd person is going to be the 'noob training wheel mode,' and I'm ok with this.

The problem is they will be splitting an already small player base, and they still aren't addressing the real barriers to entry:
No tutorial
No tooltips
Trial Mechs
etc.
If people are having problems controlling their mech, then that is a UI issue. They could do a lot of things to the HUD to make it obvious which way your mech is moving in relation to where you are pointing.
And even with 3rd person, you are still going to have the mechlab, all of the different types of equipment, heat management, throttle control, location-based damage, and a host of other things that aren't "noob-friendly."
Just call it MechAssault Online and be done with it.
The trial mech issue is too punishing to the new player. An immediate fix to the game aside from their solutions would be to allow a new player to own their first mech faster and not with a 4-10 hour grind.
The tutorial should be in place. If not, at least the tool tips and an FAQ in-game with images.
