What is the basis for even considering this change? What do they feel is wrong with the game that they need to add this view? I think this change would cause more people to give up on this game than it would bring in.

They want the world of tanks audience.

Alright, you can add a third person view as long as there isn't any stat tracking, money made, or XP gained.

That'll make it useful for people learning the absolute basics, but useless to anyone actually trying to play the game. Essentially, a non-white-listed game-mode.

^^ This! (Assuming they feel he need to go forward with this)

Brilliant idea! Fine... You need a crutch to get acclimated to the mechanics of driving a mech... here ya go. Just know you will be doing so at zero progress. When you are ready for competitive play, you will need to be "in cockpit".

It's a terrible idea. They should cater to the audience that is supporting them now and not bet on the gamble that they will suddenly hit mainstream with some desperate change.

Third person view will forever change how this game is played for the worse. Splitting the community over it is not a solution, but a problem.

Frankly, I am shocked that this is even being considered. I thought they knew better.

This is coming from someone who started playing MWO in Open Beta without any previous mech game experience and was able to learn movement just fine.

Historically, PGI has always listened to its vocal fanbase. And looking at that poll, looking at the size of this thread, I'm going to guess that their 3rd Person plans will not be as bad as we think because they'll revise them if need be. But every time PGI has ignored its fanbase, it's always then listened to the players which uses new mechanics to the point of breaking the game. If 3rd person might break this game, then make sure it does so that they remove it or relegate it.

I solemnly swear, on my fandom of the BT universe, to absolutely abuse, break, and twist past it's intent every possible use of a 3rd person mechanic that is introduced in any kind of general way (i.e. past a trial mech only tutorial non-cbill earning newby clinic). You are absolutely right, if PGI institutes it there is a brief period of time that we have the opportunity to use it to make game play as hellish as possible to show them their mistake.

This is what happened with lrm's and probably what should happen with any potentially broken mechanic, hell it's kinda our job as beta testers. So If, IF, 3rd person is instituted in any kind of general way i invite those of you, who like me, find the whole concept stupid, to join me in breaking it as badly as possible and giving pgi a chance to reconsider before quitting.

But then the new players are getting trained for a gamemode that they won't be able to play in the future. So once they have to start playing first person mode they'll have to relearn how to drive all over again.

I know from experience that this isn't the case. I played a lot of mechwarrior 4 and always used the 3rd person camera, adjusting to MWO took a couple of minutes.

I listened to the podcast and it really sounds like they are planning to take a balanced approach. I personally hate the idea, but the 'my way or the highway attitude' will only ensure this game stays as a niche market. If you make it easier for new players to join, some of them will eventually migrate to 1st person view, and that will expand our pool of players. This does not mean the apocalypse is upon us.

They can add a special daily double event for first person mode to entice new players to slowly try out first person.

You were already familiar with leg movement then. So you didn't really need training yourself.

No. Absolutely no 3rd person. This isn't Armoured Core. This isn't Front Mission Evolved.
People are having a hard time figuring out how to handle the torso and leg mechanic? It is sad that the rest of us have to pander to the TDM no skill next gen gamers.

That said, if people want to use this and only play with others that want to play 3rd person is still a bad idea in my opinion. Splitting the community is a bad idea and the number one DO NOT DO in game design.

CoD IS the casual shooter. So is medal of honor. I can't list a third person 'shooter' that casual people play, that doesn't fit the template I posted much earlier.

moh tries to copy cod. but these are exceptions. nearly everything else on consoles is 3rdperson with coversystem and tiny levels.

We already have the gunshy wang, who breaks their old promises that they'd never add mechs or items that you couldn't buy without spending real money.

No, it's really not, and when it is, it's not FPS games that are tacticool. There are infinite brown and bloom shooters out there, all trying to take 'the CoD audience.' But CoD babies don't want to play spec-ops, but stick to their CoD.

They don't play Max Payne 3's multiplayer.

PLEASE don't do this. There is nothing difficult about piloting the mech, it's very clear where your legs are pointing vs your arms and torso. It's one of the crowning achievements of this game to be in that cockpit with such an interesting aiming system of torso and arms with legs independent. It's MECHWARRIOR, not MECHASSAULT.

Please, for the love of all of us...don't make this Mechassault. Honestly...there is NO good reason for 3rd person view in anything but spectator mode. Newbies who cannot figure out to play would not be better served by 3rd person. Why?

IF YOU CANNOT SEE WHICH WAY YOU ARE POINTING FROM 1ST PERSON IT WILL NOT BE ANY EASIER FROM 3RD. How stupid ARE these people that can't figure out how to control their mech?

What a nice question by a legendary founder. Unless you're a troll.
But to answer it, here:

#1 - Being able to chose between 3rd or 1st match only, as in the podcast, isn't official, but "maybe" will become optional.

#2 - Even if they go on, and split all the match between 1st and 3rd, its a total division of the community.

#3 - It is not only affecting him, but as you can see in the poll, it affects every single one of us.

#4 - Another broken promise, as PGI stated earlier: MWO will remain an FPS only!

#5 - We didn't come here to play as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider but to play MWO!

Absolutely NO 3rd person view in a Mech simulator! They could think of something with a beagle active probe or the command module, but no piloting a mech from "over the shoulder"!

@Vassago Rain: Who cares about the Yen-Lo-Wang. Take another Centurion chassis and make yourself a better Mech!
I think theyshould continue these kind of offers. You don't have to take them, they don't win games and if you want the fance skin and a cbill bonus, just get it! You don't need one to be on the winning team.

So...you're trying to say that FPS games aren't popular on consoles? FPS games are more popular on consoles than 3rd person shooters.,

what i dont understand is - they got like 5 mill from founders alone - that is enough to create AA rating game from scratch. they also had some from pure MC buyers. Yet update after update there is only random crap and not "hey guys we decided to put your money to good use and hire a team professional coders\level designers\etc we also have this new sexy servers cluster\bandwidth etc so expect some major fixes in next couple of weeks" even with all payments for ip etc they should have more than enough for this.

I voted yes. I liked being able to take a look outside my Mech. It "MIGHT" help me when I am stuck and I need to see a way to get free.

You'd be surprised. They're not as common now but there were threads from people in an uproar over not having 3rd person since they couldn't understand movement in any other way. There are also others who get severe motion sickness from anything in first person especially with the bobbing and shaking in this game.
