I think everyone posting should actually listen to the podcast, starting at around 23:00. I'm a bit more confident in PGI's ability to handle this, but still heard some things that made me very apprehensive.

Mentioned in the podcast was having the camera mounted on the mech itself, such as the shoulder or hip.

Listen to it, reflect on it, and then post feedback.

Did before I posted.

My position stands.

Tossing in a "No" 3rd person view.

Not entirely sure what the goal is/was for this but there are certainly better ways to accomplish it without ruining the mechwarrior sim-y vibe of the current implementation. I'd say the overall skill of everyone has gone way up (less rambo suicide, teams sticking together, taking cover from LRMs) so the newbies are picking it up pretty quick. Some of the satisfaction is seeing that improvement. I still lose track of my torso and legs in a firefight and when I notice, I know I'm not in control of the situation and back off to regain my composure.

If you want to help newbies - a training set of missions with limited 3rd person view to show what action they've done
If you want to show off your wizbang MC paint job - after action replay/film room (which I think a lot of people would appreciate)

While I used to play MW4 in 3rd person view, I don't think it's a good idea to implement it here.

If we had, say, a real training ground / tutorial for new players instead of only a youtube video infodumping, then it may be interesting combining 1st and 3rd person view there and only there. Newbies would be able to link the motion of the mouse (torso) to that of the A-D keys (legs) while watching in 3rd, and then train moving and twisting in 1st person. It will still take more practice to fully use the two different movements, but at least it will be much easier to understand.

So, with the game in its current stage, no.

Ok in a simple way... with 3rd person view what's the point of scouts again? Why have a well played scout when you can sit behind a big arse building with no fear of being shot or missile dropping on your head when you can just use the 3rd person view!
My god this is not just about 3rd person view any more its about you as Devs saying one thing doing some thing else then saying its what the people want, when over 1300 people what is over 90% on the forum users have said no! These are the guys that asked for 3rd person right? so why is 90% up in arms about it.

Now you have my feed back can we hear from a Dev what made them change their minds to add 3rd person cos it sure as hell not the people that play the game.

Hello fellows pilots !

First thank you devs for that great game !

Now on the 3rd person topic:

Don't do it, because it will split the fan base and «dumm» a great game.

Let me submit what i consider a better solution to help people to adjust to the game :

Make the «C» key toggle between 3 modes:

1- ( Beginner mode) : Lock legs with torso: --> mouse turn the mech.
2- ( Intermediate mode) : Make legs follow torso: --> mouse turn the mech with legs following.
3- ( Advance mode) : Center legs with torso: --> Legs and turret move independently.

Always start game with mode 1 unless someone change it in the options menu.

Has a bonus compromise: add a in cockpit forward looking mini-camera from a in between the legs point of view. (DSTDC : the Don't Stomp The Dog Camera).

I hope it help a bit .

See you all in game.

I'd be fine with alternate views for replay and/or spectating.

I will quit MW:O if it is implemented for actual game play.

I don't see why there's a demand at all for it, COD doesn't do it and it's considered a lowest common denominator as far as most players are concerned.

3rd person was my least favorite thing about MW4. Please do not bring it back. For me, it ruins the immersion into the simulation aspect of the game.

3rd Person is a BIG, BIG BIG BIG BIG mistake. DO not do this. You have 44 pages of us saying NO, HELL NO, F**K NO. I have had my concerns about this game, and have waited more than a DECADE for this. I love this franchise, but, pandering like this, and giving a third person view will kill the game.

No 3rd person view.

It is not needed. What new people need is a place to learn the controls without the stress of live combat. In addition to this you could lock out torso twist by default letting players decide if they want to be able to move and shoot in different directions.

No. It can be interesting for spectator mode, but sure not for fighting.

A Mechwarrior-esque game that incorporates 3rd person is known as Mech Assault for the Xbox.

If third person view is implemented, I will uninstall this game and not return. Hawken here I come?

And Mechwarrior 3, and Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance, and Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.

Nice to see another ffp'er threatening "omg-ragequit-uninstall" how original.

I do not want to see third-person in the game.
I feel it was a big contributor for dividing for the "poptarting" phenomena of MechWarrior 4.
It would not add to the game; in fact it would detract.
There are better ways of training new players.

I also want to point out that, this thread began at 1234 TODAY, and right now, it is 905PM in the central time zone. less than 9 HOURS, 44 pages, nearly 900 responses, all decrying the idea of a 3rd person view. PGI, please do not shoot this game it its foot by doing something this wholly BAD. Paul Inoyue your LEAD DESIGNER stated back during CLOSED BETA with a thread specific on THIS one thing, that you would NOT do this. Why make us question this game, and PGI by and large by doing this? I do not say this to sound rude or anything, but, holy cow, if you backtrack on something THIS core to the game, do you honestly expect positive reviews or feedback from us or expect us to remain in the game for any time, since, it would be very apparent we cannot trust a thing you folks say. Not being rude, just brutally honest.

Just something for all the

HELL NO TO 3PV crowd ... and I do understand why you want it that way ...

As long as the developers manage to implement it in a way that does not give the 3PV players any advantage over 1PV players, AND they don't force people to play one way or another ...

It will not change your gameplay experience one iota.

It is entirely possible to do 3pv in a way that fits this to a tee - simply don't render anything in 3PV that can't be seen in 1PV besides your own mech.

So if a player in 1pv can't peek around a corner or over a hill ... neither will a 3pv player.

------

Maybe the anti-3pv crowd needs to take a big breath and instead start asking the developers ...

"HOW ARE YOU GOING TO IMPLEMENT IT?"

... because we can't make a valid judgement if we do not know.

I'd support that. Being anti-3pv for the sake of being anti-3pv seems more the common response so far. Nice to see some thoughtful discussion.

does not matter HOW they do it. It is a gross advantage to be in third person, because you can park behind a building, turn your mech and angle the camera around the building. No, HELL NO to this harming idea.

No. Please no, FFS no and just NO. Please do not add 3rd person view.

As stated by many in this thread already. The polls have left nothing to ponder. And you guys have far more important things to be working on.

I listened to the NGNG broadcast and have softened my position on this somewhat. If it is very limited in implementation, like for beginning "this is your mech and this is left turn, etc.." type orientation I would be ok with it. If this is only to help out new people with no concept of how this game works, then I would be ok with it. At the end of the tutorial, it should be plain that 3rd person was only for learning and that the "real" game (community warfare) is forced first person. If there are people that would stay, play and pay for 3rd person in their own area, then I suppose PGI can't afford not to go after them.
