I would like this, but you should take away the HUD and crosshairs while in third person. Basically it's just to admire your mech, which I don't get to do enough.

How is that? It's two different drops, completely different players wanting to play in whichever manner they chose for that drop. All players in Drop B are 3-pv, having the same view as others in Drop B. You're welcome to not ever drop in 3pv drop, and those who never want to drop in 1pv would have the same.

Let me tell you that I can authoritively say that I've spoken to tons of hardcore 3pv mw4 mercs players that have SWORN OFF this MWO game simply because they would be forced into 1st pv only. They won't even try it. They are just as absolutely fanatical as all of you 1pv fanatics about their opinions.

And there's hundreds more that could care less and enjoy both styles - who are playing this game right now, myself included, because it's mech - but allot of us would love the option.

simple: on the match where one team is full 1pv they lose out to the other side in full 3pv. This game is touted as a SIMULATOR. Put us in third person, and this is NOT a simulator any more.

To answer the question that was asked, I prefer First Person only. That said, I also think the best compromise here is to build in a tutorial mode for first time players that allows them to see in first person. Another good compromise would be adding in a matchmaking toggle for allow third person, the same way that some FPS have hardcore mode. Both would accomplish the stated goal of allowing new players to get used to the somewhat complicated control scheme, without negatively impacting immersion or balance.

IMO this boils down to a usability vs immersion question. I am assuming that you can toggle back and forth in game, or you have to pick before the match (which solves the "balance" issue as everyone can use the same views). Either way, the important thing here is to make the adjustment from COD to MWO as smooth as possible, while making sure MWO does not end up like Hawken (an FPS with more sound effects for walking).

the ONLY way third person would be remotely acceptable in the main game, is like this: it disables ALL weapons, ALL chat capabilities and LOCKS you to a single spot while in third person. View your mech, fine, but, no fighting, no talking to anyone, no moving. its game breaking to have it. pure and simple.

Rej man, they wouldnt be playing against each other at all. All players in Drop A would be 1pv - both sides. Drop B is a different "matcch" where all players are in 3pv. I suppose like in mw4 PGI might opt to allow Drop B participants to choose either, but in Drop A everyone would be forced to 1pv only.

No, I'm very much against any 3rd person view. I'm just not sure how your proposal helps. Thanks for the unnecessarily hostile reply.

Re-read your post and you'll see the hostility was instigated by your post, and just rebutted by mine.

there is no way to make this acceptable to all of us. IF they do it, the ONLY way to make it not game breaking is:

1. make it a toggle option in the main options.
2. make the match maker make matches ONLY with third person views.
3. make it so they do NOT join in any match with players with 1st person.
4. DO NOT DO IT. Paul said they wont. this is a huge slap in our faces, and a sign we cannot believe they are being honest or give 2 shi&s about us as players OR customers.

It seems to me that the third person perspective would become a crux; players who don't want to use it would end up using it to stay competitive.

It may be tool to train new players but it would always be an advantage relative to players who are trying to immerse themselves within the experience of piloting a battlemech in the mechwarrior universe and the temptation to use it would eventually become overwhelming no matter the skill level.

Please don't add the third person view to the game.

My thoughts to 3rd person in a live game is No.

After listening to Russ's comments, I feel that there is a place for a 3rd person view, This view should only be available in training scenarios for training new pilots.
Another option could be to have to have a module that adds 3rd man perspective into the UI of your mech showing your torso in relation to the legs.

are you looking the poll here?

90% people say NO!

I'm one of the over 1,500 people in that 90% that do not want third person view.

Don't make MWO into a crappy console game for the lowest common denominator morons out there who can't grasp a first person view.

They are not your demographic, we are.

After about 6 pages I moved on to post ... was there a single "yes" response in the 47 pages of responses?

That sounds like a resounding "No" vote from those of us that read and post on these forums.

Maybe they plan to listen to this thread? Because the reaction is obviously the most negative Ive seen yet on this forums.

This will be a test to see if they are loyal to their fanbase.

If PGI adds 3rd person its over

I mean, you yourselves already stated why 3rd person is a bad idea. Why even play with the idea at this point? 3rd person will literally be the only view good pilots would be using because it allows players to see around terrain and allows players to see exactly which direction a trailing mech is headed. It's absurd to even think about adding it in.

where is the approach of getting better instead of the ALL seeing eye of 3rd person were u can decide if you wait for that jenner t ogo left or right you and plan according wich you dont see atm
or were you can decide you get screwed from forward and backwards all takes skill and expirience now why take all that away
but 3d view would be great in MECHLAB or SPECTATOR

It is hard to believe that PGI can be so shortsighted as to actually consider adding 3rd person view.

Players who can't figure out torso twist within one game are clearly not in this game's target demographic and they shouldn't be catered to.

LOL... 3rd person view coming. Well, hard mode is over. The new guys think it is tough now... they won't figure out things even faster now. They won't see 1/2 of what I do to them since I'll see them first. THANK YOU PGI, now, if you could do your Ned Beatty from 'Deliverance' impersonation the enstompification that will come forth will have a soundtrack. "SQUEEEEEEEEEE"

Russ Bullock: IF you want us to have this abomination, please, make it a SINGLE PLAYER training thing ONLY. Do not allow it in the live game. This will break the game, there is no way around it. Please, please do not do this to us. We are opposed to this, and by and large feel that, new players need to LEARN the same way we did, just pure repetition. There is no way to make a third person angle NOT have a tactical advantage. This will instantly NOT be immersive as a simulator, it will be a mech driven Call of Duty. Please sir, do not do this to us, your Lead Designer said: NO THIRD PERSON, why this sudden admitted lie?

The largest problem I personally see with adding a 3rd person viewpoint is the potential to divide the community, especially if matchmaking (and, by extension, community warfare) is implemented in the way discussed in the podcast. Adding an in-engine tutorial (like LoL, for example) that gradually transitions a player from the 3rd person viewpoint to the 1st person viewpoint would probably be acceptable to most of the playerbase. All normal games should require the use of the 1st person viewpoint simply for consistency's sake.
