Instructor: Welcome pilot, this will be your mech for the durration of the simulation. To help you get adjusted we have enabled a 3rd person perspective. See how your legs move seperate from your torso. This allows you to walk in one direction will you focus your attention on attacking in another.

Please spend the (3rd person) time/money/manpower on the metagame and improving long term incentives.

I DO like 3rd person for Solaris style fights, and for playing against bots. (In fact, I LOVE 3rd person in MW, BUT, as the core game should be a simulator, 3rd person does not have a place in Mechwarrior Online PVP play.)

I can see two instances where a 3rd person camera would be useful:
1) death animation sequence
2) Watching others play after you die.
Other than that - no. This is a SIMULATION EXPERIENCE...not some half-assed Mechassault clone.

It does NOT have a place in MWO PVP/Competitive play. This is a simulator, not an arcade game. I like to immerse myself in the game, and while I DO love 3rd person, I do not believe those who prefer cockpit-views should be penalized because of it. (3rd person is far superior, because of the great peripheral vision.)
HOWEVER, I do believe we need side and rear view cameras/monitors in our cockpit to be activated by the POV hats on our joysticks, assuming they finally get around to truly supporting joysticks.

So let me ask this. Why isn't there a slew of new mechs coming out instead of a third person camera? I'm less concerned about this camera thing than I am that resources and time went in to this instead of adding variety, playmodes, and mechs!

I mean, it was already in Mechwarrior 2, and I never used it. But that was a long time ago, I guess people can find more use for it now. I don't know how big the dangers you people here fear actually are, but considering I don't play any other multiplayer games, I will take your word for it.
However, apart from the obvious advantage of looking over obstacles I still wonder how you intend to aim your lasers.
That being said, even if 3rd person would not be harmful to the game in general, I still think this is a bad idea, at least now. Because announcing such a new feature now is an unwise move consider how many really important features really need work right now. Spending a lot of time on a new feature that in best of cases is only moderately useful and in the worst case really harmful would be stupid.
I also think that the problem the 3rd person view should solve is a really minor one. I mean, I talked a bit about that game at work, and the very first suggestion everybody made and a considered mandatory was the tutorial level. To get new players, this is absolutely essential, and weeks ago I considered it the one feature that had to be implemented before the game goes open beta.
And it's not like it would be difficult. Just a big, textured cube with a couple of obstacles, a marked course, simple square targets popping up and a tutor's voice would be enough. How much time would it take to implement such a thing?
A week?
Finally, I want to say how impressed by (most of) you people here. So many replies and the vast majority is still constructive and pretty little flaming.
So proud of you!

I also think there are much more pressing issues that need to be worked on. The netcode is going to drive many more players away then a missing 3rd person view.
Now 3rd person for spectating would be awesome!

this is mechwarrior. this game is about sitting into a mech, feeling this typical "mechwarrior feeling". 3rd person does NOT fit into that. not at all. beside this, it would take serious affect into game mechanics like looking over hills/around corners.... just what it always does.
so please..... forget 3rd person view..... just take a look at the player votes. thank you.

Come on PGI are you insane? The world is already turning into a place where no one is responsible for themselves and their own improvement. Piloting a mech is not in anyway difficult. It takes a little bit of practice and then it is fine. Is it truly horrible to actually have to put some effort into learning to play a game? Maybe when I hit R and target someone my weapons should just hit them because I feel aiming is to much work.
PGI get a grip, you will lose more people by this than you will retain. I know I am out of here if third person becomes a reality.
As a side note. You took out the people online counter, hmmmm. Was this because you didn't want people to see how many people you were losing?
