If you want to know what the weathers like, walk outside,
If you want to know what the temperature is, drive by a bank,
If you want to know what's around your Mech, look out the freakin cockpit windows.

But 3rd person in MWO? Please don't do this. I do think the same, as already was been said: It will seperate the players into 1st and 3rd view players and what counts is the "realistic" feeling, to sit in a mech and control it.
So, when a 3rd view player goes straight, for example, he cann clearly see, when an opponent tries to sneak him from behind. That's like cheating.
And the last point you should think about is: When there are a bunch of 3rd view enthusiasts, who will buy the bobble-heads and stuff for the mechs? ;-)
Sorry for my bad english, if something is unclear. I'm from Germany.

Really really hope this doesnt get implemented.
and @ Alios Hammer. The knockdown camera wasnt a "usable third-person viewpoint" it was just a fixed camera position.
Fail much...

Well, here are a ton of people telling you no 3rd person, no one is holding back, start listening to your users
He was being facetious. Get a sense of humour.
They can provide a 3rd person view if they want, provided I/we have the option of playing in a match/server where the game is FFP only for all players in the match/server. 3rd person view has devolved most games into more cutthroat matches with no goal other than to die/respawn/die/rinse/repeat for points. That is NOT what MW games have ever been about. Ladder leagues and Planetary leagues are very different animals. EVE, while ostensibly a 3rd person view only game, does not bring in hordes of console jockies, yet has a huge customer base that CCP largely listens to. MW:O is supposed to be an analogue to that - only in 1st person.
I reiterate, go ahead, bring on 3rd person view, just allow me to not have to sully myself with players who want it because they are maladroits and cannot play in anything other than 3PV.

And I was responding to a tool who declared no coding had been done on a third-person view. A third-person view exists, and can only exist if it has been coded in.

There, now show me where he said anything about "usable." No seriously, put up or shut up. You can't show me anything about "usable" because it's not there- it's something you added after the fact to try and fabricate an argument where there wasn't one. He said "of any type," was wrong, and got slapped.
Dumber than a box of rocks...

and as the gametitle is still Mech WARRIOR Online, there shouldnt be a 3rd person view...
i think the advantage of real-cash is enough... for all those who dont have a pay pal account... i got one, but still i play 2 win... even if im not so good atm, loong time not played any MW title.
anyway, this is a Mech simulation, sort of, still someones whining for 3rd person? that means higher sight of view, so faster enemy spotting he can see u over the hill but you dont... no i dont think i can accept that too...
and LumberJack is right, the rear view camera would be good... and i like the only REAL view for MWO!! you shouldnt renew everything and i play mech warrior ONLY because of the 1st person view... otherwise you can play armored core or sth. like that... or as i said Mech Assault....
i do agree with both sides... but the fact that is unshakeble is thats an Online game and as many before i say it too:
either everyone uses 1st person view in the Match or every one uses 3rd Person view in the match, but then you need more servers because i don't wanna play in 3rd person, because you dont feel your Mech, the tons of weight, the power of an direct hit of an ppc or rocket barrage... its the feeling that makes me think i'm in the Universe and the small pov and claustophobic and irritating shakes of hits boosts my adrenaline... and i think many of you feel the same... a 1st person will always feel better and more intense than the 3rd person view ever could. Its the RPG part of the game... otherwise it would only be "an Mechgame"...
so dont argue... there will be a way... but 1st person players should never fight against 3rd person players... in the same match.

It is a great way to turn off paying, core gamers who want a sim like experience.
PGI must have done a poll at a mall asking the average 12 year old what would make the game better/easy.

and I love me some battletech action
i'd love some 3rd person of some description (not really bothered if its in battles or not) I want to see MY mech, tuned and polished, rendered in perhaps some nice little ending clip after a battle stomping off the field victoriously. (or burning nastily in defeat 90% of the time, must be pressing the wrong buttons somewhere)
and has the future really done away with rear view mirrors? really?
and as Shotokan5 above has said pretty sure there are cars with rear view cameras in them today, now!
damn even the 'radar' is LOS reliant
also I'm guessing all the sim fanatics will be using faithfully constructed cockpits for each mech....otherwise its just not SIM enough right! surely!?
hell it's not like MS flight sim games have external views. is it....
please don't tarnish or pre-judge people and spew hatred on anyone because they want to see something that makes great use of the Crytek engine, I've not seen any game look this good with battletech mechs and I've always wanted to see some sweet models of thing that TBH looked pretty naff in the good old days of gaming.. heh I'm fondly remembering the lag-lead i used to have give mechs in MW2 on my shaky old dialup
ahh well rant over I guess
cheers

Clearly in the first matches have kicking all enemys in my balls, but after a week i have learned the gameplay. That is not CoD that ist Mechwarrior. The game is for a older group of players and no K/D game.
When 3rd view comes i will play not more this game and will back my money. That is not fair and a ***** idea.
Have you boredom that make a better matchmacking (WoT standart) or localizie it in other languages german etc. and make a little singleplayer tutorial.

If "PUGS" don't like it they can go play their consoles and leave the hard core gaming to the PC gamers.

Everyone seems stuck on “this is a simulator”, no it’s a video game created to make a profit and everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what they would consider “fun” and enjoyable. I also feel there are more individuals that would like to see a 3rd person view option but do not speak up in the forums, but since they don't the argument is considerably one-sided.
