Although I have already voted, and voiced my opinion earlier, a member of my company expressed that if it could be useful to have 3rd person perspective limited to trial mechs. New users can then have a shallower learning curve, getting used to how the mech feels and reacts, from an easier-to-use perspective.

It's not a bad idea imo.

they really do need to learn to fight from a first person perspective, as there is no way to balance it so that a third person perspective will not give a tactical advantage to those who use it. They NEEDS MUST develop a MANDATORY Tutorial for us all to go through to teach us how this game works. For those of us who know how it works, it will be a nice break from combat to revisit the technical manual we all keep under our command couches, and for those who cannot figure out the game, it will teach them, from first person view, how it works and how to fight. common sense stuff really

Because lots of games have tried to add a 3rd person that was not a advantage in game. None of those games succeeded and became primary 3rd person view games because it is the only way to be competitive in the. If they did find a way to do this they would be the first gaming company in history to do this witch is not going to happen.

I don't want third person view either, but posts like this make me curious. Which games are you talking about? I can't think of a single one.

If they add a third person view I hope they would make a seperate matchmaking bracket for that. A checkbox for third person so you can decide if you want to use it or not, if you choose not to check the box the matchmaker could match you to other players that also don't use third person view.

If two seperate game modes are implemented into the game after 3rd person is added then yes, it would be acceptable (to some degree)

IF I can queue up in the "3rd Person" option playing with only people using 3rd person view (myself included) in a sort of "arcade" mode, I think I could enjoy that somewhat. And if I decide hey I want to "sim" it up go back to the "1st Person view queue"

You can have third person without arcade mode you know. The only difference between the two brackets would be third person or not. In the third person matchmaker you could switch between third and first person and in the other one you couldn't.

The absence of third person view does not make it more of a simulation game, as others said before many (most) simulation games have multiple camera modes.

Seriously?

cockpit view is immersion, it simulates riding in a mech

Just because 'others simulators' have a 3rd person view, doesn't mean they were true simulator's. (But it doesn't matter because the only game you need to compare it too is prior mech games, all broke by their version of 3rd person view.) By having to even use that argument it shows a weakness in the statement.

3rd Person View is abused a lot in Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries Onlinematches.

Sitting behind a Hill, using 3rd Personview to look "over" jump and fire, fall back down and take no dmg, sick.

There is NO way you can implement 3rd person view and not affect EVERYONE!

Peopel will jsut gain a HUGE advantage when using 3rd view. That will be a HUGE BREACH OF CONFIDENCE! I payed for this game based on the promisses that the developers gave us, and those included NO 3RD PERSON VIEW!!

Unless you're in their PR department, I fail to see how you know how many emails/feedback forms they've received. This forum does not the MW fanbase equal. not even close.

First the 91.5% you are getting from the opinion poll only represents 1% of the total playerbase (~4,000 inputs from a playerbase of ~400,000 registered users). So 91.5% of 1% of the playerbase has polled (this isn't a vote) with a negative opinion of third-person views in this game. 8.5% of 1% have voted otherwise, while 99% haven't voted at all. "Representative Samples" don't mean squat here. You can't even get anything close to a representative sample in a poll where people can elect to take part or not. Selective polls like the ones you see on these forums DO. NOT. represent anything other than the people that participate in them.

That being said, *I* do not want a third person combat view. However, I am not closed off to ideas on how to create solutions for the problems people seem to be having being stuck in a first-person in-cockpit view. I've already stated elsewhere a method to employ a non-combat, in-game third person optional view that would allow users to see their 'mech and get their bearings (as well as take awesome screenshots of themselves), that would not "break the game".

However, all of this is probably useless anyway, as Garth said several times already (and people keep ignoring):

EDIT: As of this posting, 23% (157) of the 686 posts in this thread come from only 18 individuals. You may want to check where the posts are coming from in those other "huge" threads. Thread size and post counts do not necessarily correlate to "popular opinion", even among just the forum participants (which like I said earlier do not necessarily represent the actual community).

Clearly stating his standpoint, as well as the logic behind it, and the mechanisims for their decisions, topped off with a valid suggestion for an alternative and a sound understanding of demographics?

...

Please no 3rd person it will ruin the game, the only need for 3rd person would be as an after death feature so we could have a better wider match awareness. do not do this please its just pandering to the minority of people who want it easy.

Im against it a 100 percent. It would give those using it a huge advantage while taking out the realism piloting a mech.

There's no way to have a 3rd person view that will BOTH show the player their legs/torso relation (to supposedly help new players learn what's going on down there) and NOT give an advantage of seeing parts of the field you otherwise wouldn't be able to see. Even a very close over the shoulder cam (like the devs suggested would work) would solve NEITHER of these issues. It wouldn't help new players see enough more of their mech to make any discernable difference, and it would still allow you to look around a hill or building without peaking as much of your head out into the open.

Furthermore, learning to run barefoot won't help you get better at sprinting in rainboots. Getting used to 3rd person view only means you'll have a harder time getting used to 1st person.

The devs want to help new players? They need:
More information in an intuitive format, so players don't need Ohm's Guide if they want to know how much damage a PPC will do.

A working/built-in social environment were players can chat and group and form cohesion.

A LIVE training mode so they can get a feel for the mechs and piloting without feeling guilty or stupid. Training mode doesn't need to be fun, just a small area to navigate, a couple land-marks, and a vocalized+captioned tutor with highlights on what's being discussed to lead you through a couple things.

I personally prefer 3rd person in this style of game. I understand why the devs are leary of implementing it. I know I know LORE stuff , people are all complaining about the lore. - I am shocked that a society that can develop mechs cant seem to implement proximity radar or even rear view or bus style mirrors so the mech drivers could see behind them. I mean really how do they expect them to back up!
Just my 2 cents.

Unless I am mistaken Ross said that if 3rd person is implemented it would be optional and you would fight ONLY against others who also use 3rd person. If you stay with 1st person you will fight only those who have also chosen 1st person. That seems to be the solution they came up with and he stated it pretty clear. For all of us it will help give non BT players who come in a chance to play and enjoy MWO and when they wish, can go to the more advanced 1st person aspect. Seems like a good compromise to me. The more players the better for all of us. Be interesting seeing how this works out. Save the fire breathing flames, bad breath offends everybody.

splendid. And how this would work in metagame huh ? .. your planet is attacked by bunch of 3rd person CoD funs .. either find another bunch or you are going to lose, as they play only against 3rd person viewers ?

Is it that big of a deal?.. people gravitate to what works and what doesnt. If 3rd person is better than everyone will play third person if not they wont... but as I think about it .. that is not the issue that is upsetting the forum watchers. The issue is that most people believe 3rd person is better but the "fan boys" dont want to use the better system because the old games did not give you the option... probably because the developers did not have the tech or time to implement.

Is this a correct summary or am I missing something?

Im deffinitely for an optional 3rd person view... but only if the 3rd person view is 30 centimeters further back and you get to play the whole match by looking at the back of your own head up close  .

I'd expect more after 36 pages.
In general I am 3rd person view player (heavy preference), BUT in battlemech game the whole immersion point (based on my personal understanding of things) is YOU being INSIDE of cockpit of the mech. Any 3rd person view would ruin this once and forever, and as such will be pain to the game in a long shot. That's why I against it for MWO.
