Actually, Gauss seem easier to hit with than AC's - I think the projectile moves quicker.

The Gauss shell does move quicker, but it also has far less drop than an AC shell.

simple fact is, the AC shell is chemically propelled, the Gauss shell, is NOT and achieves a much higher muzzle velocity and gets further down range before its brought down by gravity and atmospheric friction.

IMO an increase in the cooldown of the gauss wouldn't change much since it would still be a dangerous brawler.

I for myself would love to see no firing delay at all for all kind of ACs but a firing delay for gauss.

-> AC would be easier to aim in brawls.
-> A firing delay for a sniper (who is anyway leading his target constanly or is aiming for a stationary target) would not harm him that much while he is doing his job of long range sniping. But firing from the hip like in a brawl would be much harder for him that way.

because firing from the hip is not hard enough already? It takes a lot of practice and skill to hip fire scouts with my gauss. It is VERY DIFFICULT. The OP is just crying because he can't figure out how to easily kill catapults (which are the easiest mech in the game to kill), so, OP please get some skill b4 you post.

Just speaking for my self here:
ATM at close range (<100m) the gauss is easier to aim than the whole AC family.
And a weapon must have its drawbacks, no weapon should shine on every range / in every situatuion.

Again, me is against a longer recycle time of the gauss, since this would nerf the gauss in it classic operation field of sniping.
But a firing delay like AC have atm wouldn't harm a sniper but would make brawling harder (like it is with AC/20s atm).

Gauss drawback: DPS is quite low in relation to the enormous weight.

What is OP right now is ultra ac5. Which is why I am using 2 utra ac5 and not 2 gauss on my Cataphract.

The thing that makes twin Gauss so strong is that it deals a massive, single punch with pinpoint accuracy. I feel like a single Gauss is balanced, but twin Gauss make one or two shotting most mechs a very real prospect, which undermines much of what Mechwarrior is. AC/20 would be exactly the same, if they actually had a usable velocity and no drop, like the Gauss. Another problem is that the heat of two AC/20s didn't allow them to be squeezed onto a Catapult without making major sacrifices, but Gauss has basically no heat, so no issue there.

tl;dr my personal opinion: single Gauss seems balanced, twin Gauss turn this into CoD. I have no solution.

If people start to learn about moving, twin gauss becomes much less of a problem. The weapons dont converge if the guy with the 2 gauss has to lead. So they dont hit the same spot. If you dont move, you get cored by twin ultra ac5 much faster than by twin gauss.
Only that twin gauss takes up 38 tons of weight with ammo. While twin ultra ac5 only is 25 tons with ammo, leaving room for even more weapons.

Gauss benefit: Huge projectile speed, extrem long range, very low heat, very cheap non critical ammo
-> The gauss rifle IMO is fine balanced regarding dps&range&heat/weight

IMO the unjamming is a tad too short and should be ~6-10s and the spread could be a bit worse.
But otherwise the UAC is not OP.
On the downside of the UAC is the huge ammo consumption (and it is only 25 shots/t!) and the heat UAC are creating.

For me it is a quite fine balanced weapon.

It's not that hard to hit lights. Or at least it wouldn't be if hit detection and the lag shielding wasn't such a crippling issue.

The issue I have with Gaus is actually not Gaus but the fact that the AC 20 creates way too much heat and the other ballistic weapons are by comparrison quite weak. I Mount Gaus on my Atlas's now but only because the AC20 is not a viable alternative IMHO and I feel I am forced to use the Gaus to remain competitive despite the fact I prefer the AC 20. Ive also ditched the AC 20 out of my Hunchback build as with the heat it generates it is simply a liability.

Lets have a look for a second.

Lasers:
Pro's - Unlimited Ammo, Easy to Aim/accurate
Con's - High heat generation

Missiles:
Pro's - Easy to Aim
Cons - Medium Heat, Limited Ammo

Autocannons:
Pro's - decent damage
Cons - Limited ammo, high heat, Hard to aim/poor accuracy

Gauss Canons:
Pro's - decent damage, good accuracy, low heat
Cons - Limited ammo (but more ammo per ton than AC 20)

See the problem here ? a lot of people are not using Autocannons because as they are now they make your build less powerfull than it could be, particularly with an AC 20.

I could put PPC's on this list too but I think you get the point

The AC2 outdamages the gause in DPS (3.75 to 4) for far less weight and much greater ammo load.

The AC5 needs a tweak but that tweak is the UAC5, which has the best DPS of all ballistic weapons. As Ultra's come out for the 2, 10, and 20 they will get better. An UAC20 will far outpace the Gauss in damage.

Weapon:Max DPS
AC2:4
AC5:2.94
AC10:4
AC20:4.54
UAC5:9.09 (Note does not factor out time lost while Jammed)
Gauss: 3.75

With the exception of the AC5 the gauss is out damaged by all other ballistic weapons, as UAC guns in other sizes become available the damage from the UAC will more than double the DPS of the original gun (minus lock up time).

The problem with AC weaponry is the delay on fire. Its also a problem for the Gauss, however its not felt as much because you are typically firing at range, easier to lead a target at 200m than at 20m. ACs are often fired point blank, where the delay on fire takes a bigger hit. The guass is better (imo) than the standard AC weapons in TT as well. UACs are a very different story.
