I'm trying to get some of my friends interested in this game; old-school Mechwarriors from the glory days of VESA Local Bus and integrated math co-processors. The PvP-only function has really turned most of them off, but I have a couple of interested parties.

Here's the question: Assuming that they both want to buy enough MC to buy a single mech, would you recommend that they spend money to purchase one that did not carry ECM?

I run a bog standard awesome and have a blast with it every night. ECM is not be all end all nor is SRM streaks or LRM's. I don't run it and frequently get 3+ kills a match.

So yes without ECM is fine.

better??

That wasn't the question.

Voted maybe. Not because of ECM. Because I think they should wait at least 3-4 months to try this game out. Its Beta, and if they're not hooked just by the word "mechwarrior" I'd rather wait until the game is a little more noob friendly, matchmaking is better implemented, and 90% of the forum population contracts syphilis.

.... ok that last one is just a pipe dream... so much whining!

This is starting to closely resemble spam. Are 5 different threads on the same bloody issue not enough?

I've encountered this same question with a buddy of mine starting over the weekend.

What I told him was:
"The ECM is completely broken... If you buy it, you better like the mech with or without it because the ECM can not stay the way it is."

Only if they like the mech, regardless if it has ECM or not.

Also, can we please get an ignore function for the forum so I don't have to read the same post over and over again?

Well, if you plan on playing with them, at least one or two ECM mechs is a good idea.

Too many ECM mechs and you will be lacking firepower, most likely.

So, yes, and no. Your friends will need to determine which mech best fits their playstyle, and you will need / want an ECM mech or two on your team if you don't want to rely on the rest of your pick-up-group team to have such.

This is a question designed to bring up the same damn topic you keep harping on. Your threads keep getting lost because it's been discussed to death. Just stop, please.

You're doing your friend a disservice by misinforming him. Why would you try to make him think all non-ecm mechs are worthless when ECM is:

A. Mostly fine
B. A work in progress that will be tweaked by the devs.

Yes, because every mech has a role. For instance, a friend wanted a mech with maximum ballistic slots for maximum dakka; I suggested the CTF-4X. Another friend loves catapults, hates LRMs, so I begrudgingly suggested "cheese"-building the A1 (I love that term, makes me laugh). ECM isn't the game-winner everyone seems to think it is. Sure, it is very powerful but it is not without its flaws. I have seen ECM-filled teams be beaten by me and some friends in our cataphracts. (we're talking a mix of ravens, commies and atlai)
It's all about how you play the mech.

Regarding B: Totally agree
Regarding A: Sorry but no intelligent person could believe this

People seem to mistake "the ability to win" as being balanced...
