A well piloted Atlas is a scary beast, and is a great mech, but it is merely Rock in a Rock - Paper -Scissors game.

Reasons to not pilot an Atlas:

1) Speed, the Atlas does not have it, and it does make a big difference in the game. When an Atlas kills a light either the light made a mistake, or it was forced into a no-win situation.

2) Other roles: While Steiner's may argue otherwise, the Atlas does not make a good scout, lights are far better at that, nor does it make a good light killer like a swift medium would. 100 tons is a bit overkill for a LRM fire support mech. In each of these roles other mechs preform better and won't cut into drop weight as much as an Atlas would.

3) Cost: The Atlas is expensive in cbills, and this means that players have to grind more to get one, or pay more money to buy one flat out. Once they have it, the repair bills are going to be higher than lighter mechs when it is destroyed. This means that you make less money in one than you would in a less expensive mech. (this argument of course does not apply to picking the Atlas as a trial mech.)

If you like it so much by all means pilot an Atlas, I sincerely hope you have fun with it, but don't be surprised that not everybody else is piloting them.

Huh, odd statement there OP as no matter what I have piloted a lone Atlas is like blood in the water. And really they are the biggest target on the field, and an almost instant magnet for every weapon that can be fired in their general direction.

I got all 4 atlas chassis and love every one of them. Atlas is the best mech in the game and it can fill every role except front line scout.

Because it's fun as hel to zip around in my Commando-1B nipping at peoples' ankles before they stomp me into the ground.

That's why.

Because I find light mechs the most enjoyable. Zipping, moving, fading, striking, pulling back then hitting them again....spotting the baddies for your team...it is pure fun. I've watched Jenners wallop an Atlas more than a few times. It is truly dependent on how you want to play the game; I do not find the Atlas much fun at all, really.

because in my Cat I kill Atlases all day lol. And no Im not talking about a Gauss Cat. I have a founders cat with 4 MLs and 2 LRM 15s or an all energy cat variant and i get more kills in these mech and kill more Atlas mech than I would in my Atlas. It all comes down to player preference.

I just unlocked master for hunchbacks and sold everything to buy an Atlas... Haven't won a match yet.

I'm doing it wrong.

An Atlas in a team game has no intention of going 1v1 with jenner or hunchie, primarily because part of the light/mediums jobs is to keep ankle biters off the Atlas...if the Atlas has streaks a Jenner might die a little faster than you think. The Atlas is a big meat shield also...its job is to suck up damage and lay down heavy fire/missle support...an Atlas has its place. I do admit they are fun to kill with a light or medium!

Because I make more money in my Hunchback.

Because I can run from one end of the map to the other super-fast in my Jenner.

Because different sizes of mechs are good at different things.

Nothing sucks more to an Atlas' than having a fast medium or light sneak up on their back and core them from behind.

Yes, I do that sort of stuff with my laser hunchback. 4P is such an abusively fun and murderous hunchie variant. Just try to always have someone bigger and heavier than you around to take fire instead of you. :)

Because I can't get 5 kills and 2 assists with an Atlas.

Simple: A dead Atlas costs alot to repair.

Stop playing the trial mechs and man up to the big boy league..

I think the point is why would any TEAM take anything less than an Atlas. You're never going to take a medium or a heavy over an assault, except for sentimental value, or if you have a play favorite. A team of Atlas' will own any team of lesser tonnage. Yes, light mechs zip around...until they get cored by 6 Large Lasers, 3 AC/20s, etc., etc. I think there will have to be some kind of tonnage limit, to make medium and heavies a real choice.

What kind of teams do you play with?

Speed is life, friend. The Atlas also has fairly horrendous Alpha striking potential against any decent pilot (read: NOT the guy in the hunchback who throttles down to 0 and stands right in front of an Atlas thinking his AC/20 will save him), and can't horizontally track worth a damn with all of those ballistic and missile weapons.
