Atlas sides are really weak. 3 hits from a dual gauss or other high DPS weapon combos can blow your side off along with your arm. It's really tall to, so LRM has no prob smashing it to bits.

It was a good starter mech but my founders atlas is sitting there rusting away.

I like scouts the best... Lag shield is wtf OP to the max.

I roll mostly in my awesome because it feels better then an atlas when I fight. But it does have a massive hit box and goes down alot faster.

If this new mech is any good it might be my new main. I just hope alot of the armor isn't in the legs like the other mechs in this game.

I see more jenners, centurions, hunch backs and catapults then anything.

Yen Lo Wang.

Most fun mech to pilot. Landing ac20 hits on lights is ridiculous fun.

Keeping your good arm till ammo runs out is also a challenge and extremely rewarding.

Besides abusing bad game mechanics ... what reason would you have to pilot anything else?

Well more maneuverability for a main reason. I have a Catapult tricked out like my Atlas 20 LRM20s and lasers. In the Atlas I am a turret. I plant myself and fire where my team needs me. As the Cat I roam the battlefield trying to stay to the outside of combat to bring pain from different angles and jumping to higher elevations to have a better perspective.

Just because a mech is bigger with more firepower doesn't make it better. I've oblitterated Atlas's with my Jenner, Centurian, Dragon, you name it. I've even seen a Commando take on a Atlas one on one without help and crush him.

Because I can kill an atlas with other mechs easy some times. Unless they back up to a wall or something, I can stay on their backs with lights and mediums pretty easy and chew up that armor.

Why don't you pilot an Atlas and then ask me. There are -plenty- of reasons.

Using something other than an atlas is abusing bad game mechanics? So, when I kill an atlas with a centurion, which particular bad game mechanic am I abusing? Or is the implication here that a centurion should never be able to kill an atlas and therefore its ability to do so is a bad game mechanic?

im brawling in my atlases all day long, but that doesnt mean its a battlefield dominator if you get ganged by some fast lights or meds, its very very hard to get ouf of this alive and only skill will lead you out of it alive, not the mech.

In my experience the atlas is very very good at medium(200-500M) ranges, but sometimes lacks the speed for close combat(>200m) or the accuracy for long range battles, also the space and hard points in its chassis is sometimes very limiting and compromising, you always need to carry a big variety of weapons with you or you lose alot of firepower and heat efficiency.

I Actually wait for better Heavy mechs(Cataphract is probabely the first), they give you more variety what kind of roles you can play on the battlefield since they are faster and more maneuverable, you can actually build glass cannons, brawlers or snipers out of them, the atlas is just a brute force breakthrough mech with too many different hardpoints for real specialization.

I love my DDC - in fact I have Master with the Atlas. That said it is really hit or miss - mostly because of PUG players that run off and play Rambo. If supported so lights/mediums can't swarm it the Atlas is a beast.

Atlas are a big walking barn of stupidity that everything can shoot with near impunity. One on one almost every other Mech can defeat it simply by using speed to circlestrafe it to death. Even the lightest most pitifully armed Mech in the galaxy will humiliatingly defeat an Atlas in MWO. The only thing they threaten are other assaults, really, or slow heavies that can't just walk away from them.

I beg to differ, even with the ridiculous collision and knockdown mechanics.

When you have the skill to do well in the other mechs, I expect you will like them too

In every MechWarrior game I have played the Atlas is the one I like the least. Yes a good Jenner alone can take down an atlas. The firepower and armor is nothing compared to its being slow and moves like a slug especially if you have lights on you. However for those who like them they should be guarded by smaller mechs. Like a navy fleet. Then at range its tough. If Protected it is a killer and when the real game starts someone that uses that idea will rock.

Being able to move at a respectable clip, for starters. They don't call em Fatlases for nothing.

Cheaper repair bills. Nothing like watching a nimble medium or light make hash of an assault 'Mech.

LRM or heavy ballistic boating. Twin AC/20's are a rude thing to do to your average assault 'Mech, so is dropping 60-missile salvos on his head from a perch you only manage with jump jets.

Atlases are great for brute force slugfests, but they have their weak points like most designs. It'll be interesting post-patch to see the 8-mans going at it.

maybe challenge your self?
Do you always have to find the easiest way to win?
Find creativity in winning?
Does everyone have to use a Nuke to win?
Really, Are you asking this question?
Use wit instead of power?
I remember angering people beyond believe when I would kill Gladbags and Black Knights with my under powered, under armored, slow azz Chimera that was one of the crappiest mech in the game.
Why did I use the Chimera? Because I liked the way it looked, people under estimated it, I had to use my brain to win and because the sheer joy I would get from killing pilots who had to win the simplest way .
Do you only play to win or do you play for the challenge?

I prefer medium mechs but the Atlas can be a punch to the face if used correctly. I think more atlas pilots get frustrated cuz they get no help from thier lance and are often left alone. If a little mech rides up on one, his lancemates should be there to help him out. Our Atlas pilots do pretty darn well when the lance is online. It will only get better once they go back to 8man groups. Each mech has thier place in the lance if used correctly, they can be devastating if left out alone to fend for themselves they are 100 tons of target practice.

As for the little guys running around and around in circles, have fun and abuse it while it lasts cuz once they fix the targeting issues there will be a lot more light mechs littering the battelfield more qucikly. Not saying the light mechs pilots are bad or am frustrated to fight them but when they do fix the issue they will have to change the way they play the game a bit and adjust to getting hit more often.

Lag-shields, OP jenners and technical issues aside, There's a lot of Atlas pilots that are downright incompetent.
Any assault pilot who doesn't know that full throttle forward actually harm your ability to rotate and follow a circling light, or who doesn't instantly alternate clockwise and counter-clockwise rotations of both legs and torso to reduce back exposure, deserve to be stripped of his assault and given a Commando.

As an fatlas pilot, and only an average one, I have no problem keeping my weapons aimed at a circling light mech at least half of the time. The only issues comes with hit-box and lag.

Because it's fun to take down Atlas's with an "inferior" Mech.

I used a Catapult-K2 (Yes a Gausscat) all through Closed Beta and would laugh at all the smoking Atlas wreckage. For fun I would take out components just to watch them run around being useless.

Since Open I decided to farm C-Bills and not use any of my MC until some Clan Mechs or something that interests me comes out. So I have been forced to use my Founders Atlas (Still not sure why I chose it), which I can definitely say it is a love/hate relationship for me with that mech.

+ The upside is you have quite a bit of weight to work with, enabling you to throw a bunch of weapons and heatsinks on it, turning you into a stompy death machine.

- The downside is the thing is incredibly slow, and if you are stuck somewhere without teammates, you are probably going to die.
