Why Play Anything But An Atlas?

That being said, I love my Atlas, both my modified D (as a sniper/fire support) and the D-DC (close range brawler).
Nothing beats sitting around the corner of a building while my Hunchie escorts drag mechs on their tails right into my crosshairs. I can almost hear them screaming obscenities when staring down the barrel of an AC20 with 3 SRM6's to greet them.
Of course I love to sit on a hill with my sniper variant too and give the other team some loving with gauss/lrm/ERLLs. With my usual team of 3 we sometimes run 2 atlas's (1 brawler/1 fire support) and 1 hunchie (point defense) which turns out to be a lot of fun covering both of them from a hill.

"A mech as powerful as possible, as foreboding as possible, and as ugly as possible, so that fear itself will be our ally"
Paraphrased of course, but in MWO, the Atlas certainly futfilled the last part. It is FUGLY!
That being said, I also like speed, but not too much speed. Hence why I don't pilot jenners

Because they are slow lumbering Assault Mechs that function pretty much as a tank in MMOs.
They can take damage, while being annoying enough for the others guys to shoot at them. Thats their purpose, however they are easy prey for fast movers.
Theres your rolewarfare! xD

I think I've got more then 100 kills of Atlases in a Jenner.

As for fatlasses, they are good, but so are all of the other 'mechs is modified right
laughingly enough, in a 2v2 team game (I played the Fed Suns, my ally played combine, and we were playing against clanners) TT game we were running over the weekend, my ally charged 6 clan heavy and assault 'mechs with his Jenner. Suffice it to say, the Jenner survived and we were laughing our aresses off about lag shield.
As for fatlasses, they are good, but so are all of the other 'mechs is modified right

Because left-torso mounted missiles, right-torso mounted ballistics, and lazers all totally hit the same place when you fire them all at once.
The only time an Atlas is capable of actually Alpha striking is when an enemy has 0 or negligible relative angular velocity. Otherwise you're forced to chain-fire if you want to hit with the completely different lead and ballistic projectile times on your different weapon types.
Derp more.

Assault mechs have armor and weapons to make up for the lack of speed. Each weight class has its pros and cons. But this game takes into account both a pilots skill and the build of the mech.
This is the "tank" for this game. Yet other games have more players playing a DPS character types vs tanks. But with most games, a "tank" is the most forgiving unit to make mistakes with / learn how to play the game with. (torso twisting / turret like game play takes a while to master) (this is why 3rd person view is being looked at)
If the tank is supported by having others using there speed to move into range to damage / take pressure off of an atlas, the tank will live to see another day.
PUG drops that lack teamwork will leave your assault mechs exposed to this weakness. (or until we have off map arty support or air support)

I can not stand going that slow, it drives me nuts. The Cat I run with has a lot of firepower and it moves way faster (plus the turret can rotate practically all the way around).
I know why people like the mech, I just am not one of them.

Quite frankly, a lot of this game would be better if they limited speeds to TT restrictions. Lag shield wouldn't be as big of a problem and people wouldn't be rushing to drop XLs in everything.

BTW, after careful testing over many hours of play, I have determined that the OP mech is whatever I am not piloting myself at the moment...
Oh, no, you're not full of yourself at all.

Few things beat sitting in a big slow mech with an AC/20, landing a hit on a circling light mech, and watching it explode.
Except doing the same thing in a faster medium or heavy rather than the Atlas

the plan was clear: atlas leads the way , one hunchy left one right covering his sides and back and the gausscat 50m behind . as the core of such a strike lance the atlas is brilliant, any opponent we engaged had to take care of the atlas to not get ripped apart by his massive arsenal giving the 2 agile hunchies great opportunitys to jump forward and place there massive laser and srm barrage right into the distracted victims and all the time the gausscat is sniping off arms legs heads or any weakened parts of the opponents. in this role he shines, agressing, draging attention hitting hard while absorbing dammage and allowing his lance to effectivly fight and survive. its a good mech .... in combination and coordination with is supporting lance

Or perhaps it's because most Atlas pilots really are pretty horrible at their jobs. There are the rare Atlas pilots like zenstrata who can tank for the team and yet bring down 3-4 pilots on their own. And then there are those who turn in circles when facing a Hunchback, never thinking to turn the other way. Or who don't respond after getting 4-5 alphas in the Rear Centre Torso.
The lack of agility of the Atlas makes it hard to pilot, and most of the pilots I've met ingame don't know how to use their Atlas properly. In comparison, Catapult pilots tend to be harder to kill...

Because an Atlas is too slow and too large a target to be used for effective command of your team. And directing where and with whom combat happens between your team and the opposing one is far more powerful than increasing your personal weapons load. And when you run in PuGs, you don't hope your random players' team has a commander. If you want your team to do well, you take command yourself - this guarantees your random players' team has a commander every match.
