The energy/missile weapons beg for being your short-range secondary battery- twin MPL's and a Streak rack, for example.

I'll also say the dual-Gauss -4X isn't a joke. The extra 5 tons makes a difference- I can strap a Gauss on each arm, 60 rounds, and a pair of MPLs for backup and get a brutal piece of work. I feel sorry for the guy who thought he was safe when he jumped up a hill, and I just brought the main guns up and cored the poor fella in mid-air. The wider field of fire really does make a difference vs. the Gaussapults we're used to seeing. Alternatively, pack a single large laser or twin ML's + Streak for extra reach, depending on how close you want to be for fighting or general taste.

You can also go with a triple mount rather than a quad one. Triple AC/2-AC/5's is nothing to sneeze at, and the -4X is one of the few designs that can pull it off without putting them all in one single location- and you can use the tonnage from not mounting gun #4 for energy/missile secondaries.
The thing you don't see on paper in the dual guass Catapult vs Cataphrat (Cata vs Cata!) is convergence. The Catapult's dual guass are much more likely to strike the same location than the Cataphrat's. That is a HUGE difference, and easily worth 4.5 tons (0.5 lost to internal structure and extra engine/gyro space).

Holy crap though I actually tried a quad machine gun build last night. 4 machine gun + 2 medium pulse + SRM4. Early on I got into a fight with a circling Jenner. We traded blows until he retreated and I was yellow/orangish in armor. I then ran into another Cataphrat (forget which model, he had lots of lasers though) in a tunnel at short range. I just held down every button on him for continuous fire and ended up killing him. My armor was in the red but no internal damage yet.

Probably a fluke, but it was pretty hilarious.

Oh, don't get me wrong- I know the convergence can be worse than a K2. But the Gauss 4X really does pack a nasty, nasty punch- and I don't really see much problems at the ranges I'm usually firing them. For long range stuff where I'd worry? Quad AC/2's, definitely. The sheer hail of fire makes up for any real spread.

If they ever get MG's working with proper damage, I AM going to try that.

Love this son of Mother Russia.

Shoot 4 bolts/second, or 50 C-bills.
In 2min of fire, I use about 7tons of ammo.

Laser is useless, but a streak srm can afraid small kittens.

I agree about the goal of this mech:
Offer a great suppressing fire, 200m or more.

eugh the screen shake alone means that this is one of the most effective builds out there. Anyone tried DHS to counteract the heat of the AC2s?

To me, it's one of the few sane ways TO keep the heat down. It won't stop it, nothing really will at full ROF considering you're pumping 4 heat into the system so fast it'd take 40 DHS running at 2.0 to do it, and we don't remotely have that.

In Mechwarrior 3, I once fitted quad gauss in an Direwolf. I one/two-shotted everything. With tonnage it's possible, but I don't know how many crits a ultra AC/20 has exactly.

I wouldn't compare anything from MW3 to MWO. MW3 did not hold true to to critical slot weapon placements, any weapon could be put anywhere as long as there were open slots, which made every mech in the game an omni mech. However, the Daishi could fit quad gauss depending on how PGI decides to define omni slots since it does have 8 free critical slots in each arm and side torso (though quad AC/20 would still be impossible because of the lower arm actuators).

The Annihilator is the only non-omni mech I know of with 1 ballistic slot in each arm and torso, 4 total, that has the ability to carry 4 gauss rifles (it cannot carry quad AC/20 either).

When a poster talks about range and heat control, you know he's legit.

until you notice his typo...

I just want to say thanks for posting this topic. I'm running this mech after having some really bad luck with a dragon and it rocks. Quad AC2's is awesome.
