Any chances we will see a combat log of our battle actions in the future? Would anyone else want to see this implemented?

For all those who don't know what I'm talking about, a combat log would be a small text box in the ui that would display information regarding the damage output and input in battle.

For example, after firing an ac20 into the torso of an enemy, one line of text could say:

You caused 20 damage to (players name) torso (no crit)

OR alternatively if you take damage:

Your torso has sustained 20 damage (no crit)

The log could go even as far as displaying the number of armor left on a component when it is hit, but personally I think this should only be displayed if the player would devote his module slot to see this information.

The combat log could actually go in the same window as the chat panel, just in a different tab. And if the devs did implement this, I'm sure they would let you be able to customize how you would see the information. Example (only display damage you are doing to targets, change text, colors, etc.)

But would this break the game? Combat logs give a lot of information to players to exploit key weaknesses of a mech. If a player knows exactly how much armor you have left on a given component, he would only need to use *X amount of weapons/heat* to destroy it without overkill. This would allow that player to preserve their heat values while dealing the optimal amount of damage to a target.

So would this be a good idea to implement? Or does it sway too far away from the ideas of past mech warrior games?

I would not mind at all having "post-combat" combat logs, but in-combat I'm a bit meh about it.

I think it's more valuable to be able to look post-facto how well your weapons were performing, and who hit you with what and so forth.

Sure, the more relevent combat feedback the better. I think it would be cool if your MFDs showed something like that as well. Those screens are eventually suposed to be relaying combat info anyway, so this would fit perfectly.

Also +1 for you OP, nice idea. :P

Would be nice to have a damage breakdown after death to see what killed you.

I voted no, your option didn't say anything about after combat.

AFTER COMBAT, they can tell me anything they want. In combat I shouldn't know anything more than if I hit or not.

In combat it would be nice to get some general info, tell me my laser hit for 6 points, but not details on what location. I can't focus on too many things at one time anyway, so I'm not going to be looking for details, but it would be nice to see when a shot hits (since I can't always tell with lag).

After combat it would be nice to see more details.

i remember asking for this a while back, it'd be a great addition - i imagine ideally in combat you could have them muted, similar to what we have now, or limited to 'x killed y with z (location, n damage) - a more verbose option could tell you everything that either damaged you or was damaged by you

combat logs that you can dump would be great, it'd allow the more talented and enthusiastic members of the community to develop some great analytical tools for improving their own/unit's play

Your cross-hairs turn red when you hit.

This will lead to people insisting that only certain DPS weapons are viable and they have enough problems dealing with little boys who like to TK right now.

Post-combat is what I would like. Not damage so much as the Creds and EXP earned in the battle. I would totally like a breakdown as detailed as you can get (damage dealt by Energy, Missile, Ballistic, Damage Received by E/M/B, Death caused by XXX in location YYY, etc. etc.) but first and foremost I simply want to be able to go back and see Mech X, Map Y, Win or Loss, C-bills Earned, Exp Earned.

If there is a way to see that and I am simply too clueless to have found it, please enlighten me.

Logs would be good.

When I started, I had no idea how LRMs worked and fired a lot of salvos blindly after attaining lock and then hiding while the rockets likely smashed into a hillside. For a while I used Artemis with SRM/6. Right now I'm using machine guns with no idea if they are even doing damage (hoping that they cause lots of crits after armor is gone)

Firing weapons below their min rage, near their max range...

If it was detailed to the point where I could see amount of damage and location including component destruction and structural damage, I'd totally spend a whole lot of time on my logs enjoying the hell out of tweaking in the mech lab. I'd get a lot more enjoyment out of the non-combat parts of the game.

Oh yeah, and yesterday I had a mech die while still completely intact (lowest armor value 59%). I'd love to know what happened there. I was hovering my trigger finger in a likely overheat shot but I swear I didn't pull the trigger.

I would love to have full combat logs recording everything on your team which can be logged to a file. This would let people build parsers which could then help commanders see where the people in there drop are standing.

XML via a web API would really be awesome.

I could incorporate it in MWOBattleLog:

Yeah. This isn't wow. The need for DPS meters doesn't exist. Plus, it would be easily exploited in regards to confirming hits outside of LOS and such. a Hit/Miss ratio per weapon type post encounter would be excellent, though.
