Effectively they would be outsourcing a project that is on their to do list at a time when they have a lot on their plate.

That's unlikely to happen. Besides, we're more interested in getting the app out there than finding ways to get rich off it .

First I build a 3d model. I'm not putting much detail into it because it ends up as a 100 x 100 px image. I use a 3d image so we can quickly re-position them however we like for the next image, or use a rotating 3d animation (think MW 2: Mercs ).
Then I import it into gimp and strip out the background
Then I add the color shading and bring out the dark outlines
Finally I shrink them down for the Android app
And imported into the app:
