There is wisdom in this.
That gives you a long range energy weapon with tolerable heat...no min range, but high weight/crit slots...but the damage starts falling off a little over 500 meters, so you won't be able to snipe people across the map. ERppc range is 800+ meters...so you pay for the extra range in heat cost (I think they should take the heat down by 1 at least on erppc).
This gives a lot of people a long range weapon that may not be as powerful as gauss but does enough dmg to hurt...and with enough of them on the field begins to balance out gauss users vs other users.
Then up large pulse laser dmg by 1-2, cut its beam duration, maybe another small tweak or two to range/heat and you have a brawler large energy, a decent ppc energy sniper, and a hotter but longer range erppc sniper.

Ehhh... for balance reasons it should have a minimum range; that's all. Otherwise it is one of the best heavy weapons.
Honestly if someone kept the graphics of the ac20 & sound, but secretly switched it to a gauss I probably wouldn't notice it on my Cat 2X..
(although I might notice the dmg difference in combat...I'm a nerd that way)
which renders both weapons useless
How? Gauss rifles were never meant to be close range brawling weapons.... *never* I don't think there is a canon brawling mech in existence with a gauss rifle.
Seriously... every one of them is a sniper or long range direct fire support (like the devestator... which surprise surprise.. use ER PPCs also).

Suggested gauss balancing. A stacking increase in firing delay.
Example, first shot, normal firing delay till second shot, after second shot it gets increase in firing delay from 4.0? to 4.2? third to 4.4? Cap it at a reasonable level of course and delay will reset completely by letting it "cooldown" just as you would a heat gauge. This does not make the weapon unusable, it does present some realism as the capacitors "pre charge" and rapid firing might not allow them time to charge fully. Essentially the drain is not a "total drain" for an initial shot, it has some "buffer" of energy buildup available that becomes apparent with increase rapid succession firing.
Like it, don't like, just an idea I haven't seen before that might make the people saying it is op happy and the people saying don't change it feel like they haven't been nerfed into oblivion.
P.S. I am not a gauss user primarily but I have given it a try and feel the solution proposed to be the fairest possible answer to the complaints of the victims and the praises of the users of the clearly controversial gauss rifle.

NO. Gauss needs no Nerf. The gun is performing as it has for 25+ years! Actually it is already Nerfed thanks to double armor. A single Gauss slug took your head off in TT for decades. Light Mechs were devastated by a single shot. Now you have to make two well placed shots do get er done, and Lights don't have to "fear" a Gauss. That's a shame.
If we put the Gauss Min range in place, All ballistics then needs to have their Mins restored also. After all we are balancing weapons.

Gaus doesn't need anything. Its functioning as it should. You have to face you opponent head on , you have to aim it and there is no garuntee you'll even hit. All these things have to be taken into consideration.
Everyone uses it? You are full of crap. There are far more LRM boats then anything else, LRMs, the easy button of MWO. Thats probably whats behind this nerf cry. The gaus is one of the only effective weapons against all these hordes of LRM boats.

then the min range wouldnt effect you there as you are shooting at LRM boats yeah?
I think uber slow convergence is probably the biggest nerf it needs to be honest, and that shouldnt effect it that much anyway.

I agree.... LRM boats = hate gauss... Scouts= hate streaks2's..... everyone whines about the weapon that actually challenges them to use their brain.
