So first off, I'd like to say "Hello!" to the community.

I signed up for the MWO open beta about a week after it went live (missed the announcement), and I've really been having a blast, despite some of the well documented and discussed issues here (I've been lurking the forums for a while). I still hop in game, ready my mech and drop with anticipation. I don't really care if I win or lose, but the thrill of pursuing the victory and hopefully improving my KDR keeps me improving my skills. I haven't played a Mechwarrior game since MW4.

I started when I was a kid with MW3. I loved the hell out of that game and played it as much as I could (among other games), and even did my best playing online over dial-up. MW4 came out, and I absolutely had to have it. I played it frequently and with friends on a regular basis, up until it wouldn't launch on any of the newer hardware. That kept me out of the MW universe for quite a while.

So jumping into MWO, I had the base skills down, and it was like riding a bicycle. Kb/M controls were already configured the same way my MW3/4 controls were configured. The mechs were far more limited than the MW4 mechs were, but I like it more.

I typically play with my buddy "AdmiralBeran," and we occasionally play solo as well. So if you've seen either of us, you've probably seen both of us together. We tend to stick together, and work together. But, we're starting to find that we're somewhat limited in how much fun we can have not working with a full collective team. We're both eagerly awaiting the 8v8 groups to come back! On that note, MWO finally spurred me to replace my broken headset, and it should be here this week, so that we can jump in with other groups for some better group-play.

Also, I'd like thank some of the people that have really made the game enjoyable for me so far: Colddawg, Incenerator, ZoneWolf and Zukin. I have some great memorable games with you guys over the last few weeks. ;)

Welcome to the forums!

This is one of the best first posts I've read! You're vitriol level is at 0%. That's 99.8% lower than the first user post average!

And it's awesome to see that there are others helping you. Even having one teammate makes puggin' far more bearable. I'll keep an eye out for you ingame. Good hunting!

Hello ZXeno, welcome to the forums and Mechwarrior: Online.

Its great to know that you are enjoying the game in its current form. It's such a breath of fresh air when someone takes the game for what it is, an open beta (ergo, not finished.)

It's good that you have another player that you can team up with as I agree fully with Kiiyor and Armorpiecer M82 that having a teammate, even one makes all the difference. Now if only there was a way to easily differentiate your teammate from others on the Map..(Something to consider, Devs?)

Purely out of curiosity what is your preferred weight class/play style and do you have experience of the Battletech Universe outside of computer/Console games (ie the tabletop game)?

In MW 3/4 I played heavy/assault mechs. When I jumped into MWO, I found I really enjoyed playing mediums (specifically the Hunchback). But, then the Cataphract came out and I'm hooked on heavies again. I plowed through all of the basic unlocks for the 'phract and really just enjoying the hell out of it. I ended up selling off my Hunchbacks after that. As for playstyle, I really like both brawling and ranged fighting. I tend to run a little closer to knife-fighting when I'm running balistics weapons, and mid/close range with most everything else, So I rarely make use of LRMs and just strip them off.

I always wanted to get into the TT, but never had anyone to play with. And where I grew up, there wasn't anyone to play with. After I graduated, life bit me in the *** and I kind of fell out of touch with some of my nerdier leanings, BT/MW included. But, I have a small collection of the Battletech novels and a couple of the MW:Dark Ages novels that I've been meaning to re-read. I also grabbed the intro box set for the TT a few months ago and started exploring my options. Everything revolves around the kid and work though, so my timeframe hasn't lined up with any of the local gaming shops at all. :)

Hiya.

My tips
- Get on Teamspeak to play with some 4 people groups
- Torso twisting and knowing how to pilot/move effortlessly without thinking about it are very important
- Slow your mouse speed down so you can aim better
- Always watch other players if you die early, you can learn stacks more by observation of decent pilots.

Movement speed and aiming I have down fairly well. Very rare occasion I run into anything unless I back into it. I'll drop my sensitivity a little more, see if that improves it or not; my accuracy isn't too terribly bad. Not much else you can do but whatch when you get popped early, haha! I generally try to watch whoever is doing the best to see if they are doing anything I can pick up on. Most of what it comes down to at this point is spending time with other groups to improve my teamplay skills, and perfecting my aim. I'm sure there are other skills I need to work on, but I feel like I've got my heat management down, which is what I was having the most trouble with when I first started, and something I always had trouble with in MW4.

Nice. Heat management I find is also a lot to do with the build. People have a tendency to fit more weapons on than they need just because they can. Generally I go with around 1.4 heat, though it depends on the load out and play style. Seems like you're doing fine though, and yes it 'does' take practice, I've played about 5000 games now all told, through all of the beta so, whilst I'm not amazing, I have pretty good grasp of what needs to be done. Team work is a HUGE part of the game that so many beginners have yet to utilize, and yes teamspeak is one of the best ways to grasp that and more than that, I've made lots of friends via it, which keeps me keen to play :D

Look me up if you're on Teamspeak [goes for anyone really], I'm in Australia but on most days at various times, happy to pop into another room and take you through it all if I'm on. Having said that you'd be hard pressed to find someone on their who wouldn't help you too. Look for rooms of less than 4 and just join them, or get into the 'Looking for groups' and wait till someone asks for a player [the slow way lol]. Most 'clans' are fine with non-clan members joining their drops.
