The fact of the matter is that for gaming, Windows 8 will be a better OS as it has performance optimizations that Windows 7 does not have. And it's not just about the boot time--various benchmarks have shown Windows 8 to have a lead. And it's not even a complete product yet. Windows 8 also has a code cleanup with regards to APIs, which is something that was planned for Vista under the Longhorn project, but never made it.
Granted, the real-world differences in performance won't be exactly earth-shattering, but Windows 8 will be a good step forward as far as performance is concerned.
The UI on the other hand I am not a fan of. But then again, I also hated the Vista/7 UI change over XP (and to be honest, I used my XP with the classic Win2k style before that). But just as I have learned to accept the Windows 7 UI, I will get used to the Windows 8 one.
In the end, I probably wouldn't pay for an upgrade to Windows 8. If I can get it free from MSDN, then I will use it. Otherwise, Win 7 Pro x64 works nicely.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. You just got to remember to disable search indexing, because that'll eat 10% of your memory.

Your logic stumbled over Windows Me, which is short for "Millennial Edition", which is an even number and was released on 2000, an even date.

Regarding to a magically enhanced Bulldozer performance tests of the Beta have shown that Win8 will have no significant performance boost in games as it is between -3% and +3% performance change compard to Win7.

Crysis 2 did not run and Dirt 3 only run windowed.
Win 8 will also have a better support for soundcard hardware acceleration - dedicated soundcards will get an edge more over onboard sound.

Windows 8 may eventually prove to be a decent operating system (I used Vista for three years without suffering through many of the complaints people had about it specifically because I came to it late in the life cycle), but for now, the very few refinements it seems to have for gaming pale heavily in comparison to the kludgy nature of the desktop implementation.

This is the deepest truth concerning MS operating systems, even if it left one or two of them out. If you have one that works, stick with it until the next one that works comes out. Vista wasn't an operating system, it was fraud: "crap" does not go far enough.

Personally, I plan to stick with Windows 7 for as long as I can.

Yup, every other one, since 98. Me SUCKED, 2k worked really well, Vista BLEW, 7 is what I'm on now(although I would switch to Linux if PGI releases a Linux version).
