There are always going to be those A$$hatters who only vote within their clique. Shouldnt be a cliquey game. Only clan matches should offer voting for commander.

we are a social species us humans, we will form cliques, cant be helped. I promise you there are even cliques out here on the forums. I say let the system pick the commanders based on applicable abilities and gear.

Pre-match vote.
No system can decide for people.

This works if you're not grouped with a bunch of random people.

considering most matches are PUG <pick up group> matches, player choice is not a good idea, since, deny it all yall want, we will ALL think "I" should be commander and not "YOU" ya know?

It might work even in random matches if there was a way to inspect skills/equipment of possible commander choices. Then players could choose based on the provided data.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the idea of voting to some degree when appropriate... But if it's a public match, then no one should be able to hijack command with a few friends on a power trip, imho. I guess Ive been scarred by seeing trolls join and screw up games in one way or another... But then again maybe that wouldnt be a problem here... Just a bit paranoid I suppose.

Voting on commanders is... ummm, silly. On what basis would anyone cast their vote if everyone were strangers? Equipment, games played, rank... it's all completely useless to vote by. Commanding is a skill no different from any other, not a position. Unless the person in question has practiced that skill over and over they will be an awful commander and the entire team is probably better off going it alone than following instructions from someone who doesn't know what commanding a group requires and will more than likely get them killed.

I'd like to see command positions be selectable and changable in game, like platoons are in Battlefield etc. People put themselves in a junior command position (in this case for lances/stars) but it's meaningless unless others join with them. People who are doing the right things on the field will attract players to their lance, people being idiots will lose them until they have no one. If there is more than 1 populated lance on the field then the lance commanders have the option to join another lance as a subordinate, essentially creating a unified company by passing command for their lance onto another commander. It's the only way that that demonstrated command competance can influence the game. Random selection or random votes will make a joke of the command system if fools can insert themselves into it because no one will follow a fool.

You forgot the conservative "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" method...

:D

Seriously... I have a feeling there will be less jousting for that Command responsibility than many assume.

I was thinking this as well. I know I certainly don't have any desire to lead as long as I have a good commander directing me.

if the game puts me in that place, i will lead, if not, I will follow AS LONG as the orders being given are not suicidle for me. I can handle being nuttier than a squirrel on my own tyvm.

I vote for pre-match, too. When fighting in a "clan" there is already a rank structure... don't think that you will join battle alone. Next is reputation, good commanders should become known really fast - through their apperance in the forum, through advice during battle etc. I think the community is old enough not to promote a simple minded boy (yeah i know its only a stereotype)

Hm i miss a option...use prestige or money to buy the roll of a commander - there is no other option LC pilots can ever become commander

I'm going to be going with some friend lances. I'll probably run commander by fact if not by role, if I can't find someone better qualified.

You may think it's cliquey.

This will be why your reputation will matter. I know of many people more than capable of leading a lance, reading the field, and coming up with a solution to victory. More often than not, it is the method employed to do so that will command a repeat performance or summary dismissal. Becoming too invested in the game at hand and berating your troops impatiently is the fastest way to lose your perspective as a commander. Most other methods will lead to a win that lasts longer than one game. Go for the long win.

since there will be probalby friendly fire I will stay away from all my team mates at distance of longest shooting weapon in this game becose if on of them hit be just once I am gonna punch my screen and I dont have money to buy another one

my point is,with FF I will play solo so I dont care, random pick will more or less lead to disaster, aka commander troll/noob but so will voting since many people are... you know

I went for pre-match voting, too! I would hope there would be a chat for us to discuss it amongst ourselves, for what little time we have to vote. (I imagine it wouldn't be too long!)

I know I said "discuss" but in my mind I can already see the chat box filling to the brim with demands for votes and people getting mad when they don't win...but I have faith! FAITH IN YOU, MWO COMMUNITY!

Raj,

The system won't be able to choose commanders based on ability, since ability to command entails mental qualities like logic, knowledge of the game, ability to multi-task, judgement of others' strengths and weaknesses, level headedness, and compatible style.

The only possible metric the servers could use to decide the above, is a quality ranking system of how well each commander candidate did while commanding before. But that's not really much, since the other players are still going to be a huge variable.

Frankly, if someone has a decent ability to lead, it will probably show up pretty quickly in the pre-game discussion. If the guy turns out to be a doofus we'll just tune him out.

I suspect that those Ranger guys who already have over a hundred recruits are going to turn out some pretty good commanders, however. Practice does help, and a good commander can turn a battle. And I'm sure they're churning command candidates pretty quickly over there.

I will be very upset if Merc Corps can't pick who is commanding lances and the company based entirely on rank, honestly. I'm guessing rank will figure into who is commanding (at least by default) in the pub units, but not being able to chose would be horrible for coordination.
