Playing TT gives you no experience in using MWO 'Mechs.
Playing MW2 gives you no experience in using MWO 'Mechs.
Playing MW4 for 12 years gives you no experience in using MWO 'Mechs.
Know why?
Because being BASED on TT rules and ranges gives absolutely no experience or advantages in playing a live action 'Mech simulator.
The ones with the advantage, will be the ones who played PvP in a live action 'Mech simulator before. Not the MW4 SP kings, not the wizards of TT.
It's a new game. Whether the background is familiar or not makes no nevermind to the pilot who can shoot straight, spread incoming damage, focus outgoing damage, and is generally better than you. Even if they exit the game saying "What a cool Transformers game!" (but we'll have to ban them in that case)
First you forgot about multiplayer BT: online, or battletech 3025
I've earned my 500 pin in the Virtual world games, I held 3 Tesla pins, and earned my Burton... and almost got the Bell twice!!!
Long Range Accuracy is the Key to Winning against 90% of people.
Most people start a round with an idea and a plan, once you snipe them from across the map or they take a few shots of damage, they lose any plan they had and will rush into it.
The other 10% of people know what they are doing are arent shaken so easy...

For Fun, I would assume??
Why would you expect "casuals" to have any sense of team or camradarie when you had not invested any time in that games teamwork or camradarie culture? You want to make the game overcome humans selfish lazy nature? That's a lot to ask, isn't it?
MWO is trying to find a way! Kinda... by forcing you to be in a faction and league!

i'd even go so far as to say that in my experience casual gamers do teamwork better than competitive ones, who are usually just jerks trying to show off and get the highest score without caring about their team winning.

My point is that playing != practicing.

- MW4 mechs have 2 to 5 times the armor of the canon mechs, starting will be hard if you go in expecting that type of protection.
- Clan weapons are heavily nerfed in MW4, the fight with the Jade Falcon binary would have been a slaughter if the stats were correct.
- The mechlab is dumbed down to the point where you can barely create canon configs. The iconic Hellbringer and Summoner are nothing like their canon primary configs.
It'll take time for those peeps to adapt, but it's nothing special.

Do not ask which creature screams in the night
Do not ask which creature screams in the night,
Do not question who waits for you in the shadow.
It is my cry that wakes you in the night,
And my body that crouches in the shadow.
I am Tzeentch and you are the puppet
That dances to my tune.

Seriously, I know some of us are a little inexperienced, but hopefully the game will weed out the nubs and let those who really love the franchise thrive.

Well cool, that's all in your mind, how you "feel" about your playing. If it's logged no where but yourself, then sure, you're winning the fun game!
We are talking past eachother, because that point is new, I was speaking to:
Quote
And saying, why would there be teamwork with no investment in that team, and how is it the game's fault? If, as Mel says, there IS teamwork, and there IS sometimes, its because you HAPPEN to come accross players that care, randomly. To expect that... well, as you can see your experiences vastly differ from Meliessa's, even though you are playing the same game. If you want consistant, real teamwork, you need to invest in people, pilots, persons, and its not the game's job to do that for you.

The only thing they couldn't fix was the advantage 3rd person view gave, but there was always 'forced first person' view setting. The other weak spot for MW4 was it was often hard to perceive that you were piloting a giant robot and it got labled QuakeWarrior. I am glad MWO is going to be a 'mech-pilot experience.
I am fine with TT rules if they work for an MMO. If they don't, remember MWO is an MMO, not a table-top game, and be a little flexible. What's important is MWO being exciting and immersive.

The truth is, no matter how much TT bible thumpers may hate it, the same people will be good at MWO as are good at games in general. Some of those people, maybe even many, will include ex-MW4 players. Many of whom are also ex-MW2 players. Many of whom are also TT players.
Just sayin'. Don't count your chickens before they sink ships.

This is true, and I'll tell you why.
Casuals working together, for that hour, trying to win the game! YAY!!
League player logs into the open game, he is not trying to "win" the game. He is not helping, he/she is honing thier skills for the next match, doing whatever he wants, because this is only "practice". So, they end up looking like big jerks because the "team score" is often irrelevant as they are only trying to see if their current strat/tatic gets them better personal results. Now this isn't all leaguers, just crazy min/maxers. Some guys are nice. And some players egos are enough that they care about the public opinion and will work on teamwork, or scout for new recruits. So you're right, "hypercompetitive guy" don't give a @#$%. That's ok, nobody loves him in the open game either.

It's a game like any other, it really won't take a meaningful amount of time to figure out how to be good at the game vs someone with TRO knowledge. I'm not looking at this game much through MW4 lenses because I don't really want it to be MW4. I'll just approach it like I do every single computer game I play by asking myself the question: "what works?"

I am inclined to think this will be a serious culture shock to some.
I actually find it mildly amusing.
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Microsoft did a poor job with their version of MW, and the game mechanics/physics etc. Weapon ranges, mech load outs, limitations. Terrain and many other variables that affect mech combat.
I can't but hope, that MWO will not go the way of MW4 and prove to be a challenging, fun and worth while investment of time and money. Love for the Battletech Universe and a tribute to that of which many of us love about this game and related material.
For the "crotch rocket" MW4 vets and cut their teeth there but never bothered to give a go and the previous versions...
We shall see.
