I think the best boat i ever made on MW4 Mercs was taking a Puma, stripping off all the armor, cranking up the speed as much as possible and then put two LBX20s on that baby. The end result is that i would die in a couple shots in a match where everybody is running around in Assault boats but by the time they finally catch me and kill me i've already taken down a couple assaults. WOOT

yea i understand that part...the only reason i would use a mech loaded like this is to quickly kill in a deathmatch type setting..not for any kind of objective based play...

The topic of boating has been discussed frequently over the past few months on the forums and it appears PGI has several systems in place to help alleviate the dreaded "Alpha strike".
+ Having a Hardpoint system in the 'mechlab does limit, to an extent, what weapons can be mounted on a particular chassis.
+ Having Dual reticles along with the convergence system adds a level of complexity to aiming and alleviates some of the "pop tarting" seen in past iterations.
+ As lasers are DOT (Damage over time) , along wth 'mech movement, it helps to spread damage across several areas of an enemy 'mech.
If you have the time, I highly recommend looking over this thread. As it contains a wealth of information that may answer some other questions for you.
Boating is not inherently bad, it's been present since the inception of Battletech/Mechwarrior in 'mechs like the Jenner. I look forward to seeing how PGIs ideas work in a live environment.
Cheers.

My best boat was a Mad Cat loaded w/ ER large lasers and LRM 15's, no leg armor, no arm armor, and the speed cranked as fast as a mad cat could run...it ate assults alive cause you could run circles around them and group fire them to death.. but wasn't very long lived in a face to face fight..

Until someone sneezes at the legs...

-Would it be any fun to pilot such a mech? One alphas and boom the enemy is down. That doesn't sound very exciting does it?
No that sounds like a recipie for boredom. I want to struggle for survival just like my opponents.

Some people just play to win, they could care less about fun, and if they can take a enemy out in one shot, they are all the happier.

Uuugggh...[barfs]...I could never enjoy that kind of playstyle. If the majority of players in MWO becomes like that i would see little point to playing the game.
The devs will protect us from that i suppose but the horror is now branded into my brain.
If one more Mechwarrior game is ruined... This time due to the players themselves.....That would make me cry for real.

Just try ignoring the computer in MW 2 and fire like crazy even after the shut-down sequence innitiated.

With the advent of role and information warfare I have a feeling that a mixed bag of weaponry will be a very favorable configuration. Again, boats are not inherently bad, but they are very specialized roles. Ones that may not play out as well as the user intends most of the time.
Rejoice, you're at the birth of a new game. You'll get to watch as preferred builds come and go, and the game evolves.
It's an exciting time to be a Mechwarrior.
Cheers.

My question to you is..how would that ruin the game for you..it is a strategy like any other..it has already been pointed out..and i know from past experiance.. the legs are a horrible weak point..if you see someone doing a crazy alpha strike..you know to keep distance and take out the legs..im not saying this Will be my play style..or anyones..I was merly asking how it would fair in this iteration of MW..
the last thing i want is for another ruined game..MW and battletech as a whole has put up with way too many crappy games..im hoping this one will bring back the fire for us old schoolers that have been around all the way through MW4 mercs and Black Knight..and then had to deal w/ the crappy xbox versions..

everybody play to win, only some get extremly graped and to safe the remains of their collapsing pride and ego they say things like I play for fun,but the fact is 99% of time the fun factor have something to do with doing well on battlefields, something to do with WINNING
sometimes I just do crazy suicide stuff just for lols but that only sometimes
if I get totaly destroyed everytime you wouldnt see me playing for months saying "so much fun man"

For instance, Atlas loaded w/ nothing but large lasers and or PPC's. Minimal leg and back armor, upper torso and arms completely loaded out...I know heat is an issue, but one alpha strike should end anything your aiming at...thoughts?

Please see the earlier thread about boating and how it relates to MWO

They're not using damage transfer, you better hope your 'alpha' all hits center torso, and not right or left, and that it can do the 60 odd armor many mech's will have in the center torso since armor appears to be doubled.
So yeah... strip that armor off... PLEASE, I'll love you long time.
