Personally I cant understand the people that will be using Hotas setups, Aiming with a joystick almost negates any chance of achieving the sort of consistent aiming that is essential in mechwarrior games to be truly competitive, despite the trade off that is the fluid movement they get. surely an offhand joystick gives the best of both worlds with the disadvantage of neither?

The F&F beta is still in the process of testing different setups. You can notice that all the computers are the same and they are testing some in windowed mode and other in full screen. In that test they are using keyboards and mice, I'm sure in other tests they have joysticks to test them as well.
Personally I'm really hoping that the emphasis the game being a simulator rather than a first person shooter where the person is a 100ton death machine will allow for the joystick to be equally supported and balanced against the normal fps mouse and keyboard setup.

I use the Steel Battalion VT Controller in MechWarrior 4 and plan on using it in MWO once I have a week to invest in developing a mapping profile for it. PLEASE DEAR GOD LET THEM SEND ME A BETA KEY!!!
For those who don't know, Steel Battalion was an old Xbox game, famous for coming with a $200 controller which featured two sticks, a throttle, and 3 pedals to control your mech (Vertical Tank or VT in that game). It's kind of a pain to get it working on a PC, but mechanically all you have to do is either buy an adapter or just cut the Xbox plug off the end of the dongle and Frankenstein an Xbox 360 (USB) plug on with a little solder. When connected to a PC via USB it shows up as a 7-axis, 40-button + hatswitch controller if you have the right drivers. For how-to details, control maps, and more see: http://vt.beckament.net/.
Now I'm just waiting for that guy to come up with a mapping setting so that it will work in MWO. Ummm, I guess we need MWO for that first. Hrm.
Pro-tip...All the foot-pedal controls are duplicated on the main body of the controller so you don't really need the pedals. You can find VT controllers dirt cheap on ebay if they are missing the pedals, especially if they are the later "Blue Button" variant. Go pick one up for 25 bucks, buy a 10 dollar adapter and play some MW4 if nothing else. So much fun, its vulgar.

My stick is a Logiteck Attack 3 (pretty simple) with a trigger and four thumb buttons. I would stick pulse lasers or autocannons on the trigger, then different groups of missiles, ppcs/gauss, and long range lasers on the thumb buttons. I was never able to play the same way with a mouse.
