Well, what most people don't know about French cooking, or cuisine if you will, is that it is genius for making bad foods taste good. In all actuality regular toast is for stale bread as well. I could see how leaving the wash for a night would make it more congely(not a word, I know).
I haven't ever done it either, I just add some stuff to it. Like vanilla, maybe cinnamon, ginger(not the fresh stuff). Just go easy on the 'seasoning'. Also if you use stale bread, it should soak up the wash better. Also don't use syzurp, powered sugar and butter is where it's at.
Viva la TOAST a la Frenchies!

I go the "letting the custard set for a day" route as it help really fortify the wash with flavor.

While that does address some good points involving the melting, it still neglects the point that gravity and the centripetal force (and the resulting angular momentum) will eventually force the butter to slide or fall off. I wonder if that could be avoided via a spray butter or letting the butter spread out, as opposed to just plopping a slice on some toast...

Now the origins of toast. Toast has it's origins with a famous crazy powerful super "man"... Chuck Norris. As Chuck Norris fell from the heavens Toast was forming in a volcano... Each to bring "good" to the earth. One day they met at the sea. That is where Chuck Norris had his first piece of Toast. The result was Aphordite/Venus (Greek God of love and beauty) formed from sea foam. Chuck Norris has never started a day without Toast ever again.
(Side note: Toast gets darker when Chuck Norris's temper flares, but Toast gets lighter when Chuck Round-House Kicks Word of Blake followers in the FACE!)
Now I give one last push to start this Toast train a-rolling again.
