No.
Originally they were all called Mobile Suites. The protagonist of the very first series named his Mobile Suite; Gundom, a combination of Gun and Freedom.

Later on they used Gundom as an overarching name for certain Mobile Suite variants, but Mobile Suite is still the technical classification.

Yeah, pretty much.
But we really don't talk about the first one.
T'was a silly show.

Technically, some of the battletech mechs where "ripped-off" macross to some extent.

Buying is hardly what I call a rip-off. Though I can't blame the Japanese who drew them either. The only real bad guy in all that mess is Harmony Gold and Harmony Gold alone... and it's an American company.

As for the thread, I like Mechwarrior more. I just dislike the idea of robots which are more far-fetched than theh whole Warhammer 40k sticked together by duct tape.

Thats because Zaku's suck. Gundams are refered to as "gundams" and not "mobile suits" because Gundams are in a class of there own. They technically are Mobile Suits but no one really refers to or categorizes them as such.

Edit: If you haven't noticed, I essentially made this hole conversation go full circle.

Mobile Suite Gundam would be abit like saying Car Ferrari the first denotes the type of machine and the second model or make.

Anyway... The Gundam franchise have some good series (and some less good). But it is a lot more fractured then the BT universe.

@MrPenguine: The were not ripped of per se, but in order to cut down on production time FASA licensed a bunch of mechs from different Japanese manga. Something that would come back and bite them in the rear proving again that shortcuts most of the time is anything but. It does make the Valkyrie VF one of the most prominent mechs in the west during this period appearing in three different franchises. It's home of Macross/Robotech as a toy in the transformers line (Jetfire) and as is it 4 or 5 different mechs in the Battletech universe.

I only once tried Hawken but it wasn't my style. The art-, mech- and map-design are all well done and such, kudos to the (indie) developer and all, but the playstyle was too fast. Don't get me wrong, that's not a problem if you like these kind of games, but I especially like the slower pace of MWO. You're piloting a vehicle and not a robot with lightning quick reflexes and movement.

In the end MWO is more unique imho, while Hawken is one of many quick shooter multiplayer games, setting itself apart just by the art design.

Is this a joke? Mobile Suit was only good as an anime, and then only a few like Seed and Seed Destiny. The games all blow.

*recoils in horror*

Dear god, don't let any other gundam fans see that.

Federation vs Zeon was far more enjoyable than MWO currently is.

On the other hand, Gundam hasn't really tried to make an MMO yet...

Bandai/Sunrise are probably smart enough not to.

...unless they want to make it perfect.

Gundam Online is almost at open beta. Seems like everything mecha is free this year.
The graphics are looking very PS2ish, but the gameplay at least seems solid. And from what I've heard, the grind is FAR harsher than MWO's. and it's all in Japanese, soooo :P

It really depends on how you define franchises!! In turns of plastic model kits, Gundam is extremely successful. Those Iron Wind Metal miniatures are actually an embarrassment to the Gundam toys. Gundam's TV series also had good rating.

The Battletech, on the other hand, excels in tabletop wargame and the rich storyline and historical background. Gundam tried once and failed miserably.

All Gundam computer or PS series are "bad". End of story. On the other hand, Battletech now has MWO. For years, there is MegaMek and now MW tactics. There is nothing like that in Gundam franchises. Besides, the animated series have made Gundam to be invulnerable to all other mechs except for another Gundam. Who wants to drive a Zaku?

They aren't indie. Every now and then, the publisher that also owns Riot Games pours a few million $ into them. :P

Mechwarrior is the King of giant robot warfare, if you want my honest opinion. Battletech is a brother and deserves respect as well. Anything else has been fueled by these two.

The OP asks about Franchise as a whole, and I'd have to say there are -tons- of Mech franchises that are far better than Mechwarrior/ Battletech, the Macross Franchise and Gundam franchises being two of them (the most well known in the US for sure, aside from NGE which is also far better imo, but it's hard to talk about a true "franchise" for NGE when you have 1 TV series, 2 films that finish it and 3 new films being released now - but they are all essentially re-telling the same story).

Now if we are talking about -Games- (wether wargame BT, or video games), then yes, MW/ Battletech is probably amongst what has been done best so far, not sure yet about MWO though. I want to play MW2/Mercs and MechCommander all the time, which is a testament to the franchise as far as games go imo.

I'm not much of a reader so for me the Gundam franchise is more fleshed out to me. That aside the Mech Warrior world is all doom and gloom and dark and gritty and I can only take so much of that. Gundam has many moments when it shows the good in people. And even though most of Gundam's newer shows have been very lacking I'll take the original Universal Century Gundam shows, Gundam X and even Mobile Fighter G Gundams over the top action any day of the week.

To me giant robots don't need to be realistic. When ever someone talks to me about a "realistic" giant robot I imagine a show like Dawson's Creek or Black Hawk Down, both of which accurately portray giant robots in the most realistic manner possible in that there are none. Mech Warrior is still an IP that I very much love, don't get me wrong, but Gundam is several notches above Mech Warrior on my list due to characterization, world building and even merchandising. When it comes to mech designs Gundam also takes the cake, IMHO, though MWO has given me several amazing new mechs to oogle over and for that I am very creatful. I never though I'd ever look at a Centurion or Trebuchet and say to me self "Wow that mech looks sexy" but MWO's art department is doing a fantastic job so kudos.
