Why even try to compare the two? I'm an avid Gundam Fan and MW fan, and comparing these two is just stupid.

As a side note, have any of you played the PS3 game Gundam Extreme Vs? I imported it from Japan, and the online game play is spectacular. It's the only good, modern Gundam game to play though.

So yeah, don't try to compare the two.

I'll always choose MechWarrior as my mech series of choice due to the industrial, heavy look of the mechs, and the pseudo-Europe, with the Clans being the Mongal Horde. I can't believe I haven't seen more Gundam 8th MS Team from the Gundam Fans. By far my favorite series since I was twelve playing 0080, and watching it as I played MW3. B)

There were some really good gundam video games. I put more time into the psp gundam games than I have put into mwo so far.

Haven't seen any crying children in painful colourful mech's. So Mechwarrior is obviously better than Gundam.

Gotta hate these crying children that "~don't want to kill anyone Q.Q~" IN A ******* WARMACHINE OF FIRE AND DEATH GRRRR...

I actually used to like Gundam but recently... As said crying children... I can't watch these series anymore -.-...

Battletech and Gundam Wing have very little in common, style-wise. Battletech has more in common with WW2 tank battles than it does with Gundams. This also plays out in MechWarrior.

Similarly, Hawken has more in common with Unreal Tournament than it does with MechWarrior. I just started playing Hawken today, and I'm having a lot of fun in it, but it is a completely different play experience.

Gundam sucks because the Japanese can't design good looking mechs. The Warhammer is the only exception to this.

Damn, that quote makes you come off as incredibly narrow-minded. There are plenty of "realistic" and cool looking mech designs around, but if you thumb your nose and assume it's all **** based off the little you see, you're gonna' have a bad time.

Call me narrow-minded but I also hate Japanese 'mech design (and anime in general).

Also when I google for gundam all I find are robots looking like big suits of armor in strange poses.

Show us some cool realistic looking Japanese 'mechs.

P.s. I'm having quite a good time :)

For the record, that is the Dai-Gunzan/Dai-Gurren from Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, a completely different type of mecha series; TTGL is as different from Gundam as Hawken is from MechWarrior/BattleTech.

As it happens, the original Mobile Suit Gundam also has a lot of (sometimes very heavy-handed) WWI/WWII-esque themes and design elements; IMO, BattleTech (and, by extension, MechWarrior) seems more analogous to an interstellar game of Risk than to any real-world conflict.

Also: for all of the Gundam hate that seems to permeate this forum, the funny thing is that the original Mobile Suit Gundam is generally considered to be the progenitor of the "Real Robot" sub-genre of mecha-centric media.

Quote

Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) is largely considered the first series to introduce the real robot idea and, along with The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982), would form the basis of what later people call real robot anime. In an interview of Yoshiyuki Tomino and other production crew members in the April 1989 issue of Newtype, about his views on the first Gundam anime that is not directed by him, he commented on realism of the show, in which he sees the sponsors, Sunrise as imaginary enemies of Gundam, since they do not accept certain level of realism. Armored Trooper Votoms is viewed by Famitsu magazine as the peak of real robot anime.
The word could also be used to mean real world working robots per definition of Nikkei Business Publication.
They established the concepts behind "real robots" that set it apart from previous robot anime, such as:
  • The robot is used as an industrial machine with arms/manipulators and is manufactured by military and commercial enterprises of various nations.
  • The concept of industrial production and commercial manufacturing processes appeared for the first time in the history of robot shows, introducing manufacturing language like "mass-production (MP)", "prototype" and "test-type".
  • While classic super robots typically use special attacks activated by voice commands, real robots more commonly make use of manually operated scaled-up/advanced versions of human weapons, such as lasers/particle beams, guns, shields, and swords.
  • Real robots use mostly ranged weapons that require ammunition.
  • Real robots require periodic maintenance and are often prone to malfunction and break down, like real machines.
Gundam series now still refer to itself as a real robot series. It is normally referred to as the first real robot anime, it turned away from the traditional just heroes beating evil villains simple story and creates an independent background world as well as science research, and builds a world where adults can enjoy in exploring.
This is in contrast to the "super robot" sub-genre of mecha-centric media (prominent examples of which include Gurren-Lagann, Evangelion, Getter Robo, GoLion/Voltron, and Mazinger Z).

Quote

Super Robot (スーパーロボット Sūpā Robotto?) is a term used in manga and anime to describe a giant robot or mecha, with an arsenal of fantastic super-powered weapons, extreme resistance to damage unless the plot calls for it, sometimes transformable or combined from two or more robots and/or vehicles usually piloted by young, daring heroes, and often shrouded by mystical or legendary origins. This is distinct from a Real Robot, which is a mecha portrayed as a relatively common item, used by military organizations in the same manner as tanks or aircraft.

While they are very different in terms of aesthetic styling, BT/MW's BattleMechs are still generally examples of the "Real Robot" mode of thinking (as opposed to being closer to "Super Robots")... which means that they are, in a sense, a sort of "ideological descendant" of the RX-78 (no, not the FedSuns WarShip of the same designation :)) and its brethren.
Whether or not any given individual necessarily likes the fact, or prefers one over the other, doesn't change the situation.

The only gundam game thats might be slightly better than MWO atm, the PS3 free to play (Freemium) game Mobilesuit Gundam Battle operation. and i do mean its very Freemium as in you get 3 matches of the game for free every 6 hours and if you are going to pay to play you are stuck with level 5 Mobile suits and level 3 weapons. you can purchase more play time and the level 6 suits and the level 5 weapons for money but if you don't have a japanese CC or a JPN PSN money card you are stuck with the level 5/3 stuff.

The game play itself is kinda Conquest mode battlefield exept you play for 9 minutes and the team with the better score wins. All mobilesuits have different costs e.g. a level 1 Gm/Zaku 2 is 100 points and a pilot is 50 Kill them and your team gets 150 points. there are 3 main types of Melee (Gouf, Gm light armour) /ballanced (Zaku2,GM)/Support suits (Zaku Cannon/Zaku1 sniper, GM sniper and CM cannon) as you play you research different upgrade parts, weapons and mobilesuits these depend on your player rank. then you need to purchase with the points you gain. Forgot to mention its EFF vs Zeon all suits are from the one year war.
