Voted yes, not because I know much of Mechwarrior but because I see little anime in it.
Everything gets better the less anime wibes there is.

I think this question is misleading, in much the same way "Have you stopped beating your wife?" is. Mechwarrior was never a Gundam franchise, nor featured any of the Gundam elements (no Gundam mecha, no magic pilot abilities, no remote weapon drones deployed by spacecraft mecha). Putting it in the same catagory is misleading and assumes a point that isn't so.

Elements of hard sci-fi that were present in Gundam (no artificial gravity in space battles, mecha as actual heavy military/industrial equipment that needed maintenance and worked like any machine, ect.) are present in Mechwarrior/Battletech, but that is just a facet of sci-fi settings that attempt to keep some element of realism in their world, and not an indication it is a Gundam franchise.

Mechwarrior is its own setting, its own fanchise. While it may have borrowed somewhat from various anime, it became something completely seperate and greater than that. It needs to be looked at on its own, and not as a sub-section of someone's favorite anime show.

I forgive the OP's use of Gundum. It is a popular word to use describing any mech, or mecha. I understand his question, so no harm done.

And yes, Mechwarrior is the KING! The mech design and customability. The combat is outstanding. What really does it for me is the rich history and background behind the BT/Mechwarrior Universe. That alone makes Mechwarrior a game that has no equal.

Gundam sucks because the Japanese can't design good looking mechs. The Warhammer is the only exception to this.

The only mech game other than Mechwarrior that counts for anything is Earthsiege. That's it.

Is this a joke? Mobile Suit was only good as an anime, and then only a few like Seed and Seed Destiny. The games all blow.

MW/BT is not a Gundam Franchise.

While some of the visual elements came form Anime, the idea of big walking tanks has been around for much longer than that. Add to that the gritty nature of the BT universe, the subsequent book and cartoon (which is not anime), and you start to realize that while there is a Japanese Mecha heritage in BT, it quickly was minimized in BT, and by the time MW2 came out it was effectively gone.

So your poll is completley invalid. It is NOT a 'gundam franchise'.

I am entirely confused, i thought mechwarrior was a Masinger Z franchise, much like iron man clearly is a power rangers spinoff.

Oh, and Transformers is a Lego spinoff right? or a i confusing He-man with Thundercats here?

On topic:
1: Mechwarrior games
2: Heavy gear Games
3: Earthsiege Games
4: Shogo (not at all in the same category, but given the Gundam ***** of this thread it deserved an honourary mention)
5: The rest of the trash

I will say this however, Gundam games absolutely Friggin rules, when you play then in the arcades, IN TOKYO! quite possibly the homeconsole ports would suck...

MechWarrior has a very different style than Gundam does (and pretty much ALL Japanese mecha) which really sets it apart. For one thing many Gundam battles happen in space (since then they can fly around easier in the zero gravity) while BattleMechs battle exclusively on solid ground (be it planet, moon, etc). Gundams are also very flashy, and look more like an anthropomorphized fighter jet while BattleMechs are closer to a tank. Gundams are fast, often hold their weapons (what a silly concept - and yes I know some 'Mechs do this too) and zip around the place. BattleMechs are slow, hulking machines and are as a whole beefier.

It comes down a preference of style, and most people who are here prefer the hulking death machine over the flimsy space jet :)

That's just you. Thats just your opinion. I disagree with this. Mecha in the Gundam franchise are designed with mobility in mind that require completly different designs. (apart from being flashy)

If the OP would have used Macross i might have been able to compare them (no i refuse to look at "gundam" as any generic word for mechs)

That being said i enjoy them for different reasons. The Gundam series is something i enjoy purely as a animated media, i stay away from the Gundam games due to have played some really bad ones. On the other hand Mechwarrior i enjoy as a cumputergame... I have tried to enjoy the animated series but it make Transformers G1 look like a Disney blockbuster. Now i think i could enjoy a Mechwarrior Anime if it was true to the source material and stayed away from the over-styled androgyny style that often happen to Mecha-anime.

So a winner for me is Mechwarrior.

Also, if we are being technical here, the "Gundams" are called Mobile Suites.

Technically, some of the battletech mechs where "ripped-off" macross to some extent.

Wrong. A Zaku is also a mobile suit, but its not a Gundam.

Thats because Zaku's suck. Gundams are refered to as "gundams" and not "mobile suits" because Gundams are in a class of there own. They technically are Mobile Suits but no one really refers to or categorizes them as such.

Edit: If you haven't noticed, I essentially made this hole conversation go full circle.

This whole thread is an opinion thread. Except for the idea that BT is Gundam. That's the only part of this thread that is objectively wrong.

IMO (since it seems I need to say this is just my opinion), not even designing something with mobility in mind excuses those designs. That statement assumes they were designed for anything except looking like what the Japanese consider cool. For someone who far prefers that form follow function, they just look stupid.

No.
Originally they were all called Mobile Suites. The protagonist of the very first series named his Mobile Suite; Gundom, a combination of Gun and Freedom.

Later on they used Gundom as an overarching name for certain Mobile Suite variants, but Mobile Suite is still the technical classification.
