noobie here .. but even if i could afford it .. not looking forward to the razer joystick. build quality vs cost just hasn't been there in recent years for them.

That is not a recent thing. I bought an X35 combo back in, oh god, like 1999. Within weeks, it would just drift down and to the left. No amount of configuration fixed it. Called Saitek, they had me take it apart, clean pots, etc. Still nothing. They sent me a new one. Right out of the box, exact same problem. Reinstalled, even tried on another computer.

I'm sure not everyone has had that experience, but at the time, that was one expensive toy that ended up being a complete waste of money. I replaced it with a sidewinder and just dealt with not having a 'real' throttle or the 250+ configurable functions.

I was extremely close to buying an x52 today so I am glad I read this thread. If I do go down that route I will definatley get the x52 Pro but I have alot more to consider now.

I really do want that simulation feeling from MWO forgoing my keyboard+mouse combination as much as possible so thank you very much for an informative and well compiled thread

I hope you read this before you do: I bought a X52 Pro, and it was the only PC component I have ever bought that could not be used at all due to it's poor quality. The deadzone in the center is HUGE. Sure, you can mod it, but I spent a lot on it, I would at least expect it to work better than my old Sidewinder without me taking a screwdriver to it. Also, the trigger would stick on. I had to open it and trim flash off the plastic to get the trigger to work- this shows extremely low production standards and no quality control. The MFD would constantly sprout utter nonsense, and it would constantly "restart" or something, and whatever I was doing beforehand would stay there indefinitely (ie, if I was turning left, it would stay stuck like that afterwards).

Maybe I was unlucky, but if that piece of garbage could have passed their quality control, then I don't think that they are to be trusted with my, or anyone else's, money.

Based on the one I handled, yeah. The buttons had a ton of slop, the trigger had a generous side to side slop, the pinky trigger just felt awful, and the whole thing just had a cheap feel to it.

Of course, this is based on my own perceptions. I compared what I was feeling to what I remember from the Cyborg 3D, and came to that conclusion.

[edit] Forgot to mention: The X52 Pro pretty much solved all those issues.

Let me point out that that X52 you handled was a display model and the sloppy feeling of it is most likely due it's harsh enviroment at that store (kids etc.). In my experience the Saitek X52 is a firm and accurate stick, and the only bad thing I can say about my X52 is the slight noise the spring-and-plate makes after a few hours of play, but it's nothing that can't be fixed with a drop of fine oil of some sort. I is light weight and has a cheap feel to it in some ways but lets face it, it is cheap! When you compare the quality to the amount of money you must spent to get it, you will be happy with it.

In other words Saitek X52 is extremely cost effective choise for a mech pilot, imo.

But one can not really argue about matter of taste.

Well, it could also come down to quality control - some good ones, some bad ones.

Most new Motherboards come with Triple Channel RAM, so your "three sticks is off-balance" comment couldn't be more wrong. In fact, in teh benchmarks I did on my board, 6 GB of Triple Channel RAM outperforms 8 GB of Two Channel RAM

Sorry, but you seem to be misinformed. The only recent motherboard socket to use tri channel RAM was LGA 1366, and then LGA 2011 is quad channel. All AMD desktop sockets, as well as intel lga 775, 1156, and 1155 all use dual channel.

Anyone have any opinions on them?

Thanks Thomas for all your research and effort! I think this can use a sticky, in the hardware section of a Mech' game a joystick thread can't be missed.

I just remembered something when reading another post. You mention that dual throttles aren't that handy for a Mechwarrior. Can't they be used as speed throttle and jumpjet throttle? Might alllow for some fine jumpjet control in boosting between rooftops.

I don't think I have seen anyone mention Logitech's recent changes to customer support/appreciation. By becoming a member of their site you get some decent discounts on their hardware.

Do you know if anyone has been able to get ANY positive traction about the 3dpro joystick with the horrible potentiometer problems? (IE, make them realize they should use BETTER ones?)

STICKY. THIS. THREAD.

A quick question: on a plate-and-spring joystick, would lubricating the contact areas between the plate and its center rest, as well as the contact area between the plate and the shaft, help to kill the spring-and-plate feel? I'm just wondering if smoothing that out might help a lot, or if it might not do anything at all.

now I am looking around and its either buy what i had or spend 4x as much... BBQ

Not sure if you live in the US or not...also, you'll save 57 bucks if you have Amazon Prime. If you do NOT have Amazon Prime, just sign up for the free 30-day trial, order this thing, take the free 2-day shipping and the discount, then cancel, if you don't want it, lol. That said...I got it, and it's worthwhile.

Also, you may want to read up on the Logitech forums before you plunk down the cash on this thing.

Why no Thermaltake Toughpower XT love? I been running with these for ages and havent run into one bad one. My newest rig has the Thermlatake Toughpower XT 875w. Rated bronze but is borderline silver. Although they are a little more expensive they are a very reliable PSU.

Simply due to not being as good of a value as the others I recommended at their respective price points.

Gigabyte UD7 here I love it. The easiest board I ever set up. Had terrible luck with AsRock board. I went thru 3 boards before I gave up. Luckily Newegg has a decent return policy.

Thank you for this roundup, it got me thinking.
My problems are: I've never played a Mechwarrior game, and I've never played anything using a joystick. So, while I would love to get Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog, I want to be damn sure it'll be worth the asking price, as in whether or not my gaming experience will be better than the setup I successfully used for playing every other game (mouse and keyboard, obviously). And then there is Razer Artemis, which definitely seems like the thing to buy - provided they'll actually make it, but I'd rather strangle myself than buy two sets of extremely expensive (and yes, Artemis will be extremely expensive. It's Razer, after all) peripherals with near-identical functions.
So what should I do? Should I buy a (relatively) cheap but good T.16000M, see if that works for me and then either get Warthog/wait for Artemis, or don't bother and play with a mouse? I am afraid of losing what (little) shooter skill I have to unfamiliar controls.

If you're interested in trying out a joystick, you could grab a cheap one and play around with MW4.

If you get the feel for it and decide you like it... sell the cheap unit to someone and invest in a better setup.

@Vulpesveritas: While I feel your overall guide is good at getting people started, I think you really need to lay off the Intel hate and just present unbiased specs on your components.

As long as my eauipment plays fast, looks good, and doesn't burn up then I'm happy.
