Why would ANYONE use an AC/20 if they can buy a Gauss Rifle for the same price?

I love the Ac/20, I use it because its fun, but reality is putting it in the hunchback over the gauss is idiotic.
give the gauss rifle heat like every other gun, or up the recycle time to compensate.

Heat model is hooped: 2x armor, 3x fire rate, 1x (same) heat disipation rate.
You need 2x to 3x as many heatsinks to make the AC20 useable as TT.
That would be a start...for not only the AC20 but the PPC and large lasers.

This is the entire reason I use a gauss on my fatlas instead of an AC/20. That six extra heat generated makes it a lot harder to fire my Pulse Lasers and SRMs as often as if i were using a Gauss

The one ***ing thing, I don't get by now: the idiotic ENORMOUS damage of AC20. One shot every single mech with double AC20, lolwut? 40 damage points over 66 armor points on my center torso oneshot me? Make me believe... OK, guess those was headshot, since I have only 18 points of armor on it. Five times in a raw in a single game (raven (it may be, yes, without headshot) - my cat (OK...) - cataphract (???) - hunchback (WTF???) - atlas (LOL????)). Five headshots? With only two weapons on Cat-K2?
Someone explain my stupidity, please.

With dual gauss, well,my average of 1 kill per match dropped. 2 gauss vs 2 AC20s with 10 damage less or more comparisons are huge.
I am waiting till March next year when the Clan UltraAC20s to come out, it is less critical slots, lighter and I can shoot twice as fast.. so i can mount them on my XL cat.

An AC20 is intended for a good one solid punch. In an Alpha Strike centered around a typical short range brawler the AC20 deals the bigger bang for your buck.
Gauss is suitable for a slightly more fluid combat. Able to pack a punch up close or at range its versatility pays back in when you can fire it. In the case of a Alpha Strike style brawler that 5 points is alot to argue for.

I have a hard time with the idea that a large high power weapon system would not induce heat simply because the weapon itself is cryonic. That's like saying you don't have to pay the power bill because the house is currently air-conditioned to a temperature that doesn't require cooling... (Yeah, but how did it get there!?) It was a mistake in Canon, and it's a mistake here.

DPS does not matter - Alpha Hits matter and the bigger the Punch the bigger the Critical Hit.
I only use the AC20 on my Founder Atlas i once and then dust off and its extremely impressive what a Punch this weapon delivers and how often it does critical damage to the enemy and kills him instantly where other weapons still would need 5 to 10 seconds of fire.

I smiled when i read your post. The way they made Ultra Ac5 right now, it;s quite difficult to imagine how Ultra
Ac20 will NOT be overpowered. The "lucky"-non-jamming moments i had with dual Ac5s would be almost
equal to instakill when using dual Ultra Ac20s haha.
In reply to the OP, there is one instance in which the difference in damage output between the two cannons
(Gauss 15, AC20 20) will not matter much in battle, that is, if your mech has LOTS of other weapons (i.e. an
Assault Mech) which i think maybe, is the situation the OP is in. That extra 5 damage wont matter much if
you have lots of other weapons because 5 damage is only a small percent increase. Example, 45 Alpha
strike damage has no significant advantage over 50 Alpha damage, provided that even with a lower Alpha
you can fire your Gauss Rifle at extreme ranges compared to AC20.
But in cases wherein you have few additional weapons (Hunchback, dual-mode Jagers, Yen Lo Wang),
you'd really feel the damage difference between the two weapons, just as the other members have said.
And in such cases, you will feel lacking in the damage area using a Gauss Rifle.
Me, I use AC20 over a Gauss for "flavor". The feeling is different. I actually feel like i have a bigger _ when
using an Ac20. And the Ac20 i think, has a sort of a psychological effect on some opponents. The effects on
being hit (explosion animation, sound, large screen shake) would make some, if not most mechs back up.
The Gauss Rifle does not have that effect.
