I'm not talking about the PUG queue here, either. I think the assault game mode is fine there. I'm talking unit versus unit action, which will be common come the summer in community warfare (I presume).
Last night I played in a series of 6 drops against another unit and on every single map the presence of bases dominated the way the teams approached the game, the tactics. It was either defend your base, or try to storm their base, or try to get a sliver off of their base and then defend yours. One unit or the other used base capping as a core tactic. Clearly you would expect the presence of the bases to affect the game play, it is a win condition after all, and you have to play to the current rule set. I'm not criticising anyone involved. However personally I feel it was to the detriment of the game and I came away from the drops regretting that.
There were too many brawls on a base as a result of trying to force a cap or being forced to attempt a cap. I don't enjoy brawling on a base, that isn't mechwarrior for me, not be a long shot.
I don't buy for one minute that a team death match game mode implemented correctly would split the community. For starters, if splitting the community was a concern why is 3rd person perspective on it's way? Keep the PUG queue as assault if you want, just allow unit versus unit battles to agree on/vote on the rule set. If it's a tie, the vote goes the way of the defender. That doesn't split the community, it gives them a choice.

TDM game launches, everyone sneaks around going in opposing circles, afraid to make first contact until the Scouts have the panty sizes of all the enemy Mechs. Then words come over Comms. "Be ready men. The Match Timer just hit 4 minutes to go. We go soon or Draw!"
MW1 "WTF! Another Draw! That is BS!"
MW2 "Yah! Come out and Fight you *******!!!!"
and yet no one, sees the true irony in those last Comm bursts. LOL

CW will be the TDM with Teeth. (fingers crossed)

Yeah they just need to increase the time limits a bit. Should probably start a separate poll about time limits.
