Clans vs IS - Star vs Company matches?

Like wearing a Clan mask, temporary Clan players will be insulated from gaining or loosing House LP but will instead simply gain LP for that Clan.
And there might be a limit to how many Clan matches one could have in a given period to keep the game focused primarily on the IS.
5 Clan vs 12 IS

That said I would want a balanced mix of omni's and a realistic, canon IS force. I am not taking 5 Fire Moths against 12 Atlas'

Um...not quite..
5 Timber Wolves in a Star?
More like very rare at best, not to mention which Clan you are referring to.
Also you are limiting the speed of your unit as a whole and don't have a dedicated scout mech. It is foolish at least to me, to rely on one weight class.

Mist Lynx for recon
Stormcrow B
Nova Prime
Timberwolf Prime
Executioner
Tons of firepower, good electronics and arguably the toughest Assault mech in the game at this time period.

Well if you are going to have to fight 5 against 12, what do you suggest, Kit Foxes? Do remember that a Timber Wolf can move at 86.4 kph. That is a lot of firepower at a quick pace. And considering I would expect the IS to bring a mix of Atlas, Atlas, and Atlas, I would be tempted to bring only Dire Wolves if we were limited to a single star against 3 lances. Clan tech may be powerful, but I do not believe that a single Clan 'Mech is equivalent to 2.4 IS 'Mechs, ESPECIALLY not customized min-maxed IS chassis in a real-time simulation.

Only an IS-oriented player would think of packing 5 Timberwolves into a Star.
I can se ethis as being common just because everybody likes the Mad Cat. Its not an effectiveness thing... its a Fan Boy thing. Personally its my favorite mech when we used to play the minatures game. Probably wouldn't be able to play it because things like this would be likely.
If they included the trials of position though clans couls end up having some of the toughest players.
Wouldn't it be fun competing for Blood Names.

So depending on the type of opposition they will be facing they will decide whether to assign a Talon, Beak, Striker etc. to engage the enemy.
Here are some canon unit groupings from Clan Wolf:
13th Wolf Guards
Widow Command Star
Direwolf
Timberwolf C
Timberwolf B
Ice Ferret
Mist Lynx B
Trinary Alpha
Alpha Assault Star
Gargoyle
Warhawk
Timberwolf*
Summoner A*
Mad Dog C*
*Notice that there are 3 heavy mechs in an assault Star.
The sub-commander in charge of a specific battle, will have to determine what works best where.

If one truly wants to follow canon, Winson is right; stars are organized into roles; scouts, assaults, skirmishers etc. Also most units don't get to cherry-pick what mechs they end up fighting with.
you would never see an Executioner in the same star as a Mist Lynx, the two would never be able to support each other their roles clash.
Likewise don't assume when fighting clans, the IS will always roll in with 'atlas, atlas...and more atlas,' they would lose speed too.
until we know how the matchmaker works, all talk about star vs lance is speculation at best, spurious assumptions at worst.
