In the novels, overheating is very bad news for a MechWarrior. Pilots often passed out during combat because of the heat, or got so dehydrated from all the sweating that they died from it.

So, should a pilot pass-out when his Mech is overheating too much for an extended period of time?

The way I see how this could be implemented, is simply that the viewport of the pilot would narrow (i.e. edges of the screen would blur up and darken). It wouldn't go totally black, the center would remain somewhat visible, but be very blurry. The effect would only last until the heat has dissipated and that the cockpit's ambient temperature is back to normal.

Alternatively, a pilot suffering from too much heat for too long would simply die in the cockpit.

You have to remember that MechWarrior pilots were often wearing nothing else than their underwear in the their cockpit because of the heat, and that the human body is very susceptible to heat damage.

Isn't alcohol a huge dehydrator actually?

why not use similar system as afew fighter games have. the devs have implemented Blackouts and redouts when you manouver too tightly. i don't see why it couldn't be implemented here too

Sure, passing out should totally be something that might happen if you overheat and override the automatic shutdown for a prolonged time.

Precisely. As long as it's not too penalizing. In my opinion anyway, the closer to a simulation this game gets, the more I will appreciate it.

Not in soviet russia.

There definitely should be effects that get in the way of piloting, but passing out completely is a poor concept for a game.

The chassis would shut down long before it threatened the pod of the pilot.
No the pilot does not pass out from heat.

I think the passing out of the mech, i.e. shutting down is enough. Or maybe a little penalty like what you get in Flight Sims... you know the blackout when dropping heigth too fast. Something like the screen getting blurry or turning shady for a few seconds but no real passing out IMHO.

Mech shut down...Yes
Pilot passing out...No

These are Mechwarriors...not Durito Dew fueled computer jockeys. They can handle a little heat.

One in a Mackie, because Mackie pilots are huge dicks by nature.

wat

srsly

Besides mechs go far beyond water boiling temperature. In novels all mechwarriors were reasonably naked and wore special thermoisolative jackets/suits.

I would say, that if you overheat 3 times in a row, you should get black screen and some indications its too much even for you. Something like a longer overheat, without knowing of the situation outside.

What pod? There's no pod in the novels... Pilots are sitting right in the cockpit on their ejectable seat.

perhaps if it could happen, but only if beyond normal threshholds, perhaps if your shut down threshold is excedded buy lets say, 25% because when forced to shut down your not generating heat, and thus would only exceed this value by external factors, the only heat would not disipate and cool you down by comparsion would be if the envirment around you is as hot or hotter, so unless theres arenas that would rend certain possible mech and heatsink anounts inoperible, that wont be the case, leaving the only reason to pass this passout theshold would be enimy application of heat, such as flammers, this seems reasonible
