The beauty of the Orion was that it was a well balanced and very functional machine, with decent speed, maneuverability and armor. on top of that it was cheap and easy to repair, and versatile in its weapon loadout. In some aspect it was the quintessential heavy 'mech of the Pnner Sphere. I would not be surprised if the Orion migh quickly became one of the more favored trial mech in the rotation after its release. for new players, it provides taste of the various weapons MWO has to offer, and provides enough manageability to be able to effectively teach new players about the various mechanics of the game. And For those who own one, there will likely be a number of things pilots can do to make the mech their own.
Now some might call the Orion a "poor man's atlas", I call the Atlas (particularly the RS variant) a "Steiner's Orion". Because anything the Atlas can do, more likely than not you could run an Orion for far cheaper, and with more critical space to play change things with. And while I suspect we are going to see some min-maxing, I think there is an equal chance to see more build designs which reflect the way each pilot's play-style, as opposed to a straight min-max. Hopefully when it arrives, PGI will have done justice for this versatile, venerable, and proud machine.

Thats news to me, and much needed in my opinion. I'm sure you're already aware but In that current GDC interview, It was mentioned that PGI is looking to expand/hire 100% the staff (currently 50 staff want to go to 100) My concern, although it isnt something I'm losing sleep over, is weather this additional staff is going to be helping with MW:O or their sister title Mechwarrior tactics?

i can already sense the mwo loadout of the orion:

1 PPC in each arm.... a gauss in right torso.... and eventually 2 SRM 4 or 6 in left torso...

First loadout I'm gonna try:
  • AC/20
  • 3xSRM6+A (at least one variant will likely allow this.)
  • No arms.
  • Big fat engine.
Gonna name it "BLACK KNIGHT" or "FLESH WOUND" or something similar.

Just going to post one variant idea until we actually see the real hardpoints (they always add some somewhere,) and just cause I don't want to tip any ideas right out of the gate. :P

Orion ON1-M

Heat Efficiency : 52.79% (52.05% with Fast Fire & Cool Run)
Total Firepower : 18.25 DPS

Weaponry:
1x Ultra AC/5 (3 Tons of Ammo)
3x SRM 6 (3 Tons of Ammo)
2x Medium Lasers

Note: I always pad my initial number of heat sinks until I can get a machine in game, and then adjust up or down accordingly. This design is a good example, probably doesn't need 17 Double Heat Sinks but that's what I'm going to start with and whittle down to add other items. (Possibly Artemis, or upgrading the mediums/etc.)

1K should allow 1 Energy per arm, dual missile hardpoint and a ballistic (minimum number of hardpoints so I don't dream on :)).. I'd probably go for Endo, AC 20+3tons, dual ASRM6 +3 tons, 2x ML (case in the LT some armor shaved off the arms sinc they shouldn't be much useful to tank and contain only the mlasers), with a 300 engine and 12 DHSs.

Tell me why I can't have the orion the next month and I have to wait for Flea and Blackjack (mechs that I don't really even consider to buy)? :angry:
