So, I just bought DHS for my Stalker 5S and I regret it. I'm not able to put heatsinks in the legs now and, as such, I'm less heat efficient than I was before... now I'm stuck with these until I earn enough cbills to take them off! There's not enough slots in the center torso for a heatsink, either... seems odd that you can't put one ON the engine (I know, I've got heatsinks in the torsos but, still).

Before I upgraded, my heat efficiency was .80. After upgrading and putting DHS everywhere I could fit one, my heat efficiency is .79.

The slot layout on this thing doesn't seem to make sense. It seems as if you're limited to one upgrade because of the slot limits. If you buy one upgrade, you're now unable to get another one because you don't have enough slots. I like it... but it just seems like I'm being punished for trying to upgrade the thing.

It's a mech that uses guns in such a way, you're sometimes better with standard sinks. Nothing wrong with that.
But you can still do well with dubs.

Just need to learn how to play tetris with your equipment. My own 5S is setup like in the pic.

You need a bigger engine rating and then can slot in one or two heat sinks into the engine for the mech. Get an XL 280, that thing is a work horse in my stable. You can slot 1 HS in it.

I'm running dual PPCs, 4 ML, 2 SRM6, and 2 LRM10s on mine. I really like the firepower I get with that. I think I'll just grind up the CBills to replace my DHS with SHS and ride with it. I really liked this mech until I tried to customize it. :/

Or make your second stalker a SHS one, so you can play around with both configs without switching back and forth.

Downgrade the LRM10s to LRM5s, and the SRM6s to SRM4s, and there you go. Now you can fit more cooling than you could before.

Or you can vary it in other ways, like taking streaks instead of LRMs, or what have you. But like with so many mechs, you need to solve the puzzle to get the most out of the mechlab.

My biggest gripe is that after I upgrade to DHS, I can't fit HS into the legs. I guess I could throw all my ammo down there, though.

That's what you're supposed to do, yes. Put another ton in your head while you're at it.

dhs arent worth it in the stalker without a standard 300. i recommend at least .84 heat efficiency in the standard loadout stalker

i use dhs and endo to fit an additional ams and the standard 300

I didn't have much trouble with mine, but I upped the engine to a standard 300.

Currently using:
Standard 300
6x Med Las
4x SRM6 (4 tons ammo)
2x AMS (2 tons ammo)
20 DHS total
496 Armor

I'm liking this build quite a lot. It makes a damn good brawler.

I toss my ammo in my Stalker legs. You usually have some extra tonnage kicking around and it has a decent amount.

LOL!

I love your mech's name, Vassago. It is even a purple warrior, too! Just need to make the arms more flesh colored... :)

These are probably the most child-friendly names and colors out of all my mechs.

One thing to note: dont look at the efficiency in the mech lab, it doesn't reflect the true calculation of dual heat sinks. While somewhat common knowledge, I'll repeat what the devs have said about how DHS work.

The first 10 heatsinks in an engine are calculated as 2.0 worth of heat sinks, all extra heat sinks, or any heat sinks placed outside of the engine are calculated as 1.4 heat sinks.

To provide an example: if you have a 225 engine, you can have a max of 9 heat sinks in your engine. Those 9 are calculated as 2.0. The minimum 1 you have to place outside of the engine will be calcuated as 1.4 heat sinks.

In the case of say a 275 engine, it already has 10 heat sinks in the engine. Those 10 are calcuated as 2.0. You can also place an additional HS inside the engine. However, this extra 1 HS will be calcuated as 1.4 heat sinks.

Bringing this back to the original post, the mech lab efficiency bar calculates ALL dual heatsinks as 1.4. So, what this means is that your efficiency is actually better than what your mechlab is telling you.

For example, if you have a 250 engine with 2 additional heat sinks outside of the engine. Your true equivalent number of heat sinks will be 10*2 + 2*1.4 = 22.8. However, your mechlab is making the calculation based on 12*1.4 = 16.8 heat sinks. As you can see there is a significant difference in the number of equivalent heat sinks your mech is using. That is why many times people will see their efficiency drop after adding DHS to their mech.

Are you sure? I thought they 'fixed' the engine heatsinks down to all 1.4.

Anyway, my 5S uses a grand total of 40 single heatsinks. I have only one critical slot left. It's probably better off using singles.
